  1. Honestly? The only problem I have with this is if NCsoft uses this testimony as a good reason to close CoH. That's my main worry. I hope to all hell that they won't care though
  2. EDIT: FPARN! HI ZWILLY.

Aha I just started a similar thread to this. http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=297146

I didn't include "It proves them "right" about members of the community being immature/ It provides them fodder to generate more page views."
So yes, going to emphasize that.

Also, page views -> ad revenue. Don't give them ad revenue. Use AdBlock and/or don't visit at all (better).

They made a decision, one that I feel like we're going to have to respect: that City of Heroes is not in their long term goals as a company. As far as I'm concerned, we're not asking them to change their mind about that; if I decide that skydiving isn't in my personal long term goals, I don't want people protesting and trying to make me feel like I've made the wrong decision.

My communications have focused on a way out of this in which we all win, which is NCsoft allowing the game to be sold to another company. That way, we get to celebrate winning the battle to save City of Heroes, and NCsoft gets to tell its customers and investors that even when a game isn't in the long term goals of its company, it still cares so deeply about the community that it is willing to do something that is very rare in the industry: let its property go to someone to whom City of Heroes is in their long term goals; that it works very hard to build incredible communities like ours, and even when it gets to the point where it can no longer support that community, it takes necessary steps to ensure that the community continues. That's a PR and marketing win, and in no way does it reflect badly on their decision to divest City of Heroes from NCsoft's portfolio of games.

Please remember our message, because it is very important: Our goal is not to sink NCsoft. It is to save City of Heroes. I know that some of you disagree with this and I understand completely, but to me personally, if NCsoft works to ensure that City of Heroes continues in the hands of someone who is interested, that really makes them a damn cool company in my eyes. No, I'm not happy about it deciding to shed itself of Paragon Studios and City of Heroes, but at least in the end, they will have done the right thing.

As for Paragon Studios, when you see me referring to the really short time window of opportunity in which we're working on our immediate goals, this is the time window I'm talking about. In my mind, IF Paragon Studios is interested in re-forming under its own banner, that would be the optimal solution. However, I'm keenly aware of three facts killing us on the clock: 1) These people have a proven track record of developing a profitable game, 2) they have a lot of friends and contacts within the industry who can get them in the door, and 3) they need to put food on their table. I am under no illusion whatsoever that 80+ people are pounding the pavement right now looking for jobs. I'm guessing that the total number waiting around to see how this all plays out before looking for other work is exactly zero.

IF Paragon Studios is interested in re-forming under its own banner, time is of the essence. It's only a matter of time before we start losing Matt Millers, Melissa Biancos, or other key members of the team that would be difficult (and frankly, a bit demoralizing to the community) to replace. That's why I've been so insistent on us keeping longer-term goals with larger time windows out beyond our laser-focused efforts so far in communicating with the press and NCsoft what our optimal goal is.

I haven't heard back yet from NCsoft, but I hope to. If not directly, then through the media or even through a third party. And yes, I also subscribe to the notion that at least for now, no news is good news. I'm optimistic that it means that they are putting their heads together within the halls of the company and asking, "How are we going to get out of this?" and that's a good thing. I want them thinking that.
Ah...yeah, I'm agreeing with this. It seems pretty clear that NCsoft won't be having anything to do with CoH anymore, nor do they plan to. So the way Titan and associates have been going about it is exact and feasible. Focusing on the value of time? Yes. Focusing on getting it sold since NCsoft is off with it? Yes. I'd go through this piece by piece but guys just read what Tony said.

My friend feels this way too. He's known about the game and NCsoft much longer than I have, so I'd agree that it's unlikely that they'll revert. That doesn't mean the game is gonna die though, 'cause again: sell it, private studio, etc.

    Here's what NOT to do:
    1. Read that website, giving it your valuable pageviews (which they can then use to sell more ads)
    2. Post ****** comments on that website, giving it even MORE of your pageviews and clicks (which they can then use to sell MORE ads)
    3. Write about/link to that website, giving it additional pageviews and clicks (which they can use to sell EVEN MORE ads)
QFT. If you *have* to click, do it with AdBlock or any script blocking. They want attention. Don't give it to them or their ads. Please.

I'm in favor of commenting simply because if it sits ther without responses people might think they're right. If you're doing that, again, try to avoid the ads and pageviews.

    "Negative Press"

Hey guys, it seems like we're getting some very, very minor bad press about this. By very minor I mean not even press. Literally all that's being posted are people with their personal blogs.

Uhh... so I thought I'd put a few things of note here, in case it helps anyone!
    1. There's a ton more positive press than negative press. I mean a ton. Check out TonyV's compliatation of media coverage. I'm mostly sure that everything there is positive and saluting our efforts, or at the very least, acknowledging them without mocking us.
    2. Again, most of the negative stuff is not from editors, but by bloggers. Don't let them sway you much. Sometimes they do have some commentary that might be helpful to know, but know that we're not getting slander. It's overwhelmingly just some folks' opinions moreso than research. Some people have been including new facts that's one good thing from them.
    3. Some of these people are just ranting for attention or for the sake of ranting. There's a chance that a few are just putting out stuff to instigate the community so they can get ad revenue. If you don't have AdBlock, I'd suggest it. They really, really might not feel that way but just want visits so their ads can make money. Don't do that for them. It's a crappy way of getting fame and funds but people do it.
    4. I'm glad we're sticking through it and we have a ton of people responding very objectively. That is awesome. I love the CoH community. I would've ended this with a warning to not perpetuate a flame war but I haven't see that happen and that's great. You guys are great.

I think that's all that's on my mind. If anyone wants to link to what I'm referring to that's fine with me, but the focus is more on "what do if bad press?"

    Thanks for reading!
  7. It's been a while! I updated the changelog. Still super busy, but it should be integrated soon.
  8. I'm not sure 'cause I spend a majority of my time doing team things, like iTrials and TFs. Would we have NPCs for that, or would we get to create our own companions and have AI for that?
  9. Adding next round:

I'm more than convinced there's nothing we can do to appeal to their kindness and generosity. Even if I believed corporations were capable of that, that kind of went out the window with the foreclosure.

I don't support trying to ruin NCsoft as a business because all attacking a publisher financially does is hurt the legitimate developers that rely on that publisher. But if said publisher treats employees badly, then I'm not going to look the other way and try to be nice. NCsoft pull the strings, and so we need to be diplomatic if we want anything to come out of this. But "diplomatic" is not the same as "timid."

  20. I forgot about the Livejournal community and I forgot to include Reddit, so both of those will be added soon:

Reddit has some really good crowdfunding history, although I'm not how sure it'd work for a video game! I've mostly seen it done for individuals who are in some sort of crisis, but I haven't watched those things happen for a while...so I'm not for certain.

The Livejournal community has collected some information so I'll pull those over to this post soon:

I don't know what value NCsoft ascribes to the CoH intellectual property or to the codebase, but they did pay Cryptic $10,000,000 back in 2007 for their 50% of the IP rights and to license the codebase to run the game indefinitely and to release either two or three (I forget exactly how many) new retail products. 2 of those were Architect Edition and Going Rogue.
  21. This reminds me of a situation that happened with Halo Wars. Bear in mind, a friend told me this so I'll try to recount it as best as I can:

Halo Wars was cancelled two months after its release, with the studio (Ensemble) shut down and so on. However, the game still persists today (on Xbox 360 though) because the people in the company mostly stuck together and reformed into a new company (Robot). Robot eventually got put in charge and ownership of Halo Wars despite not having any credits.

Revision: I read the Wikipedia version and it differs a bit where the studio shut down after game completion (Not release). Hmm, still...
    Quote:
On September 10, 2008, Ensemble Studios announced that it would close after Halo Wars' completion.[50] Ensemble founder Tony Goodman and other employees announced the formation of a new studio, Robot Entertainment, shortly before the game's release;[51] another group of ex-staff created Bonfire Studios.[52] Robot announced that, while developing new intellectual property, it would support Halo Wars and Age of Empires through a partnership with Microsoft Game Studios.[53]

I haven't looked at the actual time-line, but 3 months is what 12 weeks(?) but as the announcement was on a US holiday w/e, which would hinder the press getting hold of the story and realistically probably kills the first week, making it 11 weeks.

Assuming any meetings can be arranged between people wanting to take over IP (should they exist (Hypothetically. I know about Titan Network's work.)) and NCSoft or a potential (hypothetical) management buyout of PS. That would kill at least another two weeks.

Then even if NCSoft say yeah here you go IP and code base for CoH 1 billion KW (or whatever), that leaves very little time for anyone to get any resources together to achieve any sort of cash. Crowd Sourcing may well work but it's not at all realistic to expect the sort of cash needed to be found in what 9 weeks?

And lets be honest here even if TN get the cash and restart the servers they're going to lose a large number of players who don't know any of this and just want a game to play. (Because I bet there are people still playing who have no clue as to what is going on.) They'll also lose people who think that as an unproven games producer they aren't trust worthy.

So even if the players do pull a rabbit from their metaphorical hat the game is pretty much doomed.

At least in such a short space of time.

Now if NCSoft had announced that they were looking for a buyer a year ago, and that failure to find one would lead to the game shutting down...

So I think the speed is also a significant point to note, especially if you discount sudden changes in licensing.
Dungeon Runner had only a month 'til dark, at least that's what I heard. It's interesting though because there's some parallels with what's happening with CoH (bear that I'm using Wikipedia, lol):

    Quote:
NCsoft said it would be refocusing its efforts on big-budget, top-tier MMOGs. The announcement was accompanied by news that NCsoft had laid off a number of developers working on its casual MMOG Dungeon Runners, as well as canceled plans to bring the game to other platforms, believed to be Sony's PlayStation 3. Dungeon Runners had dropped, as producer and lead programmer Stephen Nichols confirmed that the game will be taken offline on December 31. Dungeon Runners, which operates under both a free-to-play, microtransaction-supported and subscription-based business model, launched to good reviews for the PC in July 2008.
"Dungeon Runners just isn't cutting the mustard," Nichols said on an announcement on the Dungeon Runners forum. "If she were a ship, she'd be taking on water. Yeah, she's been taking on water for a long time now. Are my cryptic references too hard to decipher? The game just isn't profitable. And, the first rule of business is to be profitable!"
Nichols went on to note that, while the team has a number of ideas to generate revenue, they would be expensive and risky to implement. He also noted that said plans would be greatly hampered given that two of the five developers on the game had recently departed from the team.
Nichols noted that those with paid memberships to Dungeon Runners will receive digital copies of City of Heroes Architect Edition and Guild Wars Prophecies. The producer also stated that anyone who "needs refunds for multiple-month membership purchases will be taken care of."
The online service for Dungeon Runners ended on January 1, 2010. The website was shut down shortly thereafter on January 3, 2010. Many players had commented on the official forums that they thought the biggest mistake was the re-organization of the servers that occurred when the game went to a retail box version. Several of the servers were merged or made available to retail box purchasers only, and good game communities were broken up as a result.

Let that sink in a bit. The title would galvanize our efforts, and be perhaps the biggest resurgence possible for an MMO. Now with that in mind, wouldn't you want to tell your friends about it? Wouldn't that be an excellent selling point? Ripples. Lots of them.
