Wait a minute, Tic-Toc was BAB?

OK, so I am obviously slow on the uptake, but I just want to make sure I got this right.

Tic-Toc the tank from Tempest Legion (that I actually joined briefly during my CoH tenure) was in fact Back Alley Brawler from the Dev team?

Seriously?

Of all the...

Well he was a great tank and his toon was awesome lookin.

But seriously...

I actually logged game time with a Dev team member and never knew it.

SERIOUSLY!?!

This reminds me of the big surprise when people learned that bass_ackwards was Fire Man. I love these kinda surprises.

I'm also still waiting for Alpha Wolf to let folks know who he is.

I'm still a bit curious as to whether I ever teamed with Castle or even knew his Justice characters.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Totally speculative, but years ago I teamed briefly with a very sharp, courteous player whose toon was rook-themed and whose account was blandly generic-sounding: @12345.

Since rook = castle in chess, and the global handle was almost obnoxiously meaningless, and the player seemed to really know his stuff, I always wondered if it might have been Castle himself. But I'll never know. Only played with the character for an evening or two, then never saw that character again.

OK, I admit it.

I'm really Bill Murray.

I used to fiddle with my back feet music for a black onyx. My entire room absorbed every echo. The music was . . . thud like. The music was . . . thud like. I usually played such things as rough-neck and thug. Opaque melodies that would bug most people. Music from the other side of the fence.

Zombie Man opening himself up so TheNet can expose himself is either the script to the worst porno movie, or the best horror movie I've heard all year.

So random question to you TJ....

I remember you saying that "I'd be surprised who plays on Liberty" (dev wise)....

So who does?

I admit that I had suspected, but didn't honestly believe Tic was BAB until he came out and said it on the boards.

BAB had once mentioned that he had raided Hami often on Justice before becoming a Dev.

Tic-Toc had been posting less often around the time that BAB started working on CoH.

Biggest hint was that I remember Tic-Toc had once mentioned working on... was it Auto Assault? The Car MMO that NC canned a not long after launch?
BAB had also mentioned once working on it.

I think after He left paragon he went back to Cryptic and is currently working on Neverwinter over there.

I don't recall mentioning anything about Liberty. If I made a comment to someone that "you'd be surprised who plays there" it was mostly a joking reference to the fact that several of the devs have said they keep a character or two on each server just for random teaming and to see what the players are saying.

But honestly, I can't even recall saying that.

I'll admit, I only knew because Quatermain figured it out and told me. I don't recall the specifics of how he pieced it together, exactly, but I think he knew Tic's real name and found out BaB's real name too, and, well, "duh". This was quite some time back - probably circa I10 to I12.

I don't know if he mentioned it to anyone else, but I assumed he was trusting me not to spread it around*, so I didn't. There were other people in various globals I was in who seemed to know, though.

* I've written about it on the forums a few places in the last few days, but I figure it's worth mentioning that I've known Quat a long time. Probably since at least 2001, well before CoH was live. We've never met in person, though, sadly.

IIRC, here is the list of Devs that played on Justice.

Alpha Wolf
Back Alley Brawler
Castle
Ghost Falcon
Positron (<--I believe this is where he played his Fire Dom).

I believe a couple of the Arbiters also played on Justice as well (Arbiter Oates).

How do I know all this?

I was Ghost Falcon at Paragon Studios.

During the Closed Issue Betas (beginning with Issue 9), I managed the Beta Lists, and all NCsoft, Paragon and Cryptic Studios employees would send me their friends and families' names. Sometimes, I would get an actual game account name, but more often than not, I would be given a character name on a server, so I had to look up a lot of game accounts to make sure that the right person got in.

In my opinion, Justice had the most influence on Betas in their earlier stage because of their association with devs. It was easier to digest small amounts of feedback, rather than thousands and thousands of feedback.
I fondly remember reading the Beta Tester Global Chat Channel(s) and seeing the realization from the early beta testers that there were a lot of Justice players there.

A bit of trivia about Tic-Toc / Back Alley Brawler, and I.
  • I first met/played with Tic-Toc before either of us were hired on to work on City of Heroes.
  • Tic-Toc and I were members of a Justice SG called Redemption (and it's sub SG, Dawn of Redemption)
  • Tic-Toc went on to Tempest Legion, and I went on to the Golden Knights. (Note: The Golden Knights is now essentially defunct, and I've moved on elsewhere).
Side Notes:
  • Pohsyb played on Pinnacle.
  • Most of Cryptic Studios employees played on Freedom (like poz).
  • I want to say that when City of Villains launched in 2005, that the Cryptic Studios employees Villain Group was on Freedom..., but that was sooo long ago, I might be mis-remembering.

Yeah, about that:

Once I got in late to beta because Castle thought pohsyb or another dev submitted me and pohsyb assumed one of the powers people did.

Twice I got in late to beta because I was apparently submitted but never got the email.

Once I got in late to beta because some of the devs thought I was on some recurring list, and apparently I wasn't because there was no such list.

Once I got in late to beta because somehow I got onto a second wave list.

Once I got in late to beta because everyone forgot I still technically needed to be officially submitted.

And for bonus points I got in late to Issue 18 beta because I was already activated on the vendor server and no one thought to notify me that the beta actually started.

But I'm feeling muuuuch better now.

I can see how some of that happened.

IIRC, the recurring Beta List started around Issue 11 or 11.5 (11.5 was done near the CoH acquisition, and in my opinion, should have been called Issue 12).

If your name was on a "Cryptic employee" referral sourced list, then those referrals were removed from the recurring Beta List. At the time, since Cryptic was working on a competing superhero MMO, it was deemed necessary to remove any person tied to a Cryptic employee. (i.e. If you were on Geko's list, and not on Castle's, your name got removed.) Truth be told, you may have been on pohsyb's list, and got removed that way. What many people don't know was that pohsyb came on board Paragon Studios *after* the acquisition, and pohsyb wasn't part of the CoH-15 dev team. When the CoH IP acquistion occurred, the Beta list was one of the many things that had to be scrubbed. I probably just selected the excel cells of Cryptic referrals and hit the delete button. For that, I apologize.

The beta email notifications were a headache for us as well.

..., and by the time Issue 18 hit, I stopped handling betas around Issue 17. I'm not going to throw my successor under the bus on that one since Issue 18 - Going Rogue Beta was one of the biggest betas managed since City of Villains.

I am also crushed that you don't recall how I created IO enhancements on the fly for you during one of the Betas.
