VALVe email campaign
Sent.
This game is a part of me, i won't let it die without a fight.
I want to write an E-mail, but every time I try to type something about the game I start getting emotional.
Contact me in-game: @CheeseSlicer
Wanna share it? It couldn't hurt to have a template for the less erudite of us that still want to help.

It also had minor personal bits to it.
Maybe some buttkissing and admission to never actually using Steam or playing any of their games.
I'm horrible. ;P
I don't know if this can work, but I know it can't hurt to try.
I sent him an email.

I24 Proc Chance = (Enhanced Recharge + Activation Time) * (Current PPM * 1.25) / 60*(1 + .75*(.15*Radius - 0.011*Radius*(360-Arc)/30)) Single Target Radius = 0. AoE Non-Cone Arc = 360.
I think the only major thing I might have done was tried to make myself as humble as possible.
I think the best way to go about it is in a business sense. Yes, Valve probably has a conscience, but if Gabe bought up every sob story he came across he wouldn't be rich.
Also do your best to remind them that they'd have a fiercely loyal playerbase that would literally love them forever.
I agree - that's why I brought up the amount of already existing content, as well as the loyalty {and prospective gratitude} of the players.
I've sent my email.
Also the fact that i24 is close on the horizon. Reintroducing the game with the fix everything issue would be brilliant. And make the name, Resurgence, all the more appropriate.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

EDIT: Don't kid yourself though, Valve has no reason to pick up a dying, decade old MMO. |
NCSoft will not just give up the game and the IP. End of. The price to aquire this game is far greater than anyone could ever make back, even if there were a price at all. Which there isn't.
|
At some point a long time from now you'll realise how utterly ludicrous it is to be trying an email campaign to Valve, so they'll use their own money to brawl over City of Heroes with NCSoft because you emailed them a bit.
You're asking them to make a simply colossal effort, which is what this is, for very little return. You know what, I think they're going to do nothing and continue to be mind bogglingly wealthy without the effort. |
They don't always work, in fact most times they probably don't, but that's no reason to NOT try. I've never understood the mentality that because something is an attempt in futility means it shouldn't be attempted at all.
Quinch, whether it works or not, thanks for the attempt!

Judging by the "EU" in your name I'm assuming you're from Europe? This is by no means my $#*tting you guys, just an observation, but it seems a lot of those saying "don't bother, they'll never go for it" or something similar in other threads are from that region.

The very best thing you can do is to first, actually send the email. Even if it's something like,
"Please help save our community." You don't even need to talk about the game.
If you want to put a little more into it, share a short anecdote. He's (hopefully) going to get a lot of these emails, so the detailed history of your first 50 probably is a bit much to digest. But something you remember, something you can make a real connection with.
After that, talk a bit about your time spent here and your friends in the game. Talk about your weekly 40-person raid, if you can. It's an investment and as others have said, his company would be buying the loyalty of the community, so he's got to know what that's worth.
And last, and just as important as the first part, is to thank him for giving up some of his time to read it.
The other thing is... we're going to be doing a lot of this. So pace yourself. Don't pour everything into one letter to one person. Gabe's one possibility; the NCSoft petitions are one possibility; Turbine and EA and dozens of others are all possibilities. Hell, PWE is a (very very... uh, very, very... very remote) possibility -- it's not like companies only run one fantasy game, so there's a case to be made.
Just be ready for a lot of emotional exhaustion, really. It's a long road with no guarantee of success.
Heh.

Well, again, I would like to reiterate, I'm not lumping everyone over there into the "don't bother" group. Heck, there's probably some Americans in there too, I just haven't seen them.

Well, I was being serious about being European, not serious about any offense taken.

"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.
Ok, but if I have to start paying for endurance imma roundhouse kick their collective faces.
Gotcha. Just want to make sure the message isn't overshadowed by the potential international incident I may cause, lol.

Once you pick a goal to commit to -- like, "Save Paragon Studios" -- you've got to really commit. Don't be so picky about the details; we can worry about whether the devil we're selling our souls to was really a tanar'ri later on.

EA has had a track record of doing... exactly not that.

Well, I've been trying to send an email, but the stupid image verification keeps resetting the page.
Edit: There! You can't include links in the email, which in my case would have been links to a news article and NCSoft's quarterly report.
Here's what I sent (despite my emotions, I tried to focus it on the business side of things):
---
Mr. Newell,
As I'm sure you're aware, yesterday NCSoft announced the pending cancellation of the superhero MMO City of Heroes. I would just like to add my voice to those fans suggesting that, although NCSoft's market focus away from western-developed MMO 's has left little room for City of Heroes, the game's hybrid model and market-based transaction system would make it a perfect fit for Steam.
NCSoft's earnings release for the second quarter 2012 show that sales have held steady throughout the year at slightly less than 3000 per quarter (approximately 12,000 per year on top of a very substantial and loyal long-time subscriber population) and its sales equaled nearly half of all NCSoft's sales in the North American market over the past year. The numbers demonstrate a stable profit margin for the game, it's one of the most well-known and longest running titles and one of only a very small handful to cater to a comic-book fandom.
Despite being the oldest of the three superhero MMO's currently on the market, it's consistently remained competitive against DC Universe and Champions Online, and the public response to the news has demonstrated the accumulated loyalty and enthusiasm of its fan base, one which overlaps with that of Valve. City of Heroes has partnered with Steam in the past, which is why I hope Valve will consider this announcement an opportunity to acquire an otherwise abandoned IP and with it both a very loyal, vocal fandom and the game's own rapid and productive output cycle for new marketplace items and expansions.
Thank you for reading this email, and I appreciate all that Valve and the Steam distribution model have done for the industry and may yet do for City of Heroes and its fans.
A fan of Valve Software and Paragon Studios,
---
