December 21 apocalypse event

The December 21th is a good opportunity for an apocalyptic event. I suggest the Rapture theme, where true Christians take off to the sky, while the rest are left behind facing Tribulation.

Pre-Rapture
Since this is City of Heroes and not a church, I suggest that badge count is a proper way to determine if someone is ready for the Rapture. There will be some special alignment-like missions where players can choose to either lower or raise the probability to be raptured (serve Jesus or anti-Christ). The exact requirement for Rapture Ready is secret.

The Rapture
If you are Rapture Ready and logged in when it occur, you will take off to the sky. You will see the world from above, and you will be accompanied by a trail of pure light, maybe a light blue alpha aura.

The Tribulation
Those who are left behind will face the Tribulation. Current zone events like Zombies, Super naturals, Rikti and Nemesis will be common, giant monsters and arch villains will roam zones where they aren’t expected. Maybe some super unique invasion, like the Mako event.

Heaven
Saved characters will have access to a heaven zone. An entirely new zone is probably out of the scope for an event, but I think some of Shadow Shard with a different sky color can work. Doing certain missions in heaven can yield interesting rewards. Some ideas:

* A temporary power: exorcise demon (heal ally, clear status effects).
* Confederate flag costume pieces
* Death emotes (unsaved people might have access to it later)
* Emotes: readbible, preach

What x the **** squared.

For all those Mayan Christians out there?

No thanks, sounds like something you should role play.

Edit: Sorry. That may be a bit harsh. Why would you choose the end of the Mayan calander for a Christian fable event though? I am not against any belief system, but keep them out of the game please. Too much possibility for buthurtidity.

Yeah, WAY too religious in theme. It's just going to end up offending certain people. (Not just the people who have to do the "Tribulation" either.)

Also, I do believe that myth was debunked, that the Mayan calendar doesn't end on December 21?

Would this event conflict with the Winter Event that will most likely be running on this day?

Also...

Why? What does the Confederate flag have to do with the Rapture?

Keep your religion out of my game please, thanks.

I noticed that as well.

If there is any answer to that question ASIDE from nothing, it surely amounts to craziness.

The premise of "hey, let's do an end-of-the-world event" is solid. The date has been a big deal in pop culture and news for the past year or so; poking fun at it could be, well, fun. The close proximity to Christmas is a bit of a worry, though; won't the winter event presumably already be running at that point?

The idea of tying it to any currently-practiced real-world religion's end-of-the-world myth is a recipe for disaster. Maybe they could get away with some form of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse or something since that's such an anthropomorphized "end" that could be easily turned into characters for our heroes to fight (as many superhero properties have already done) or Ragnarok since that's a largely-dead belief system and nobody would have to worry about offending anyone by injecting subjective, judgmental and exclusionary language like "true Christians" into a friggin' video game -- one enjoyed by people of many faiths, and many of no faiths at all.

Maybe it could be tied into existing, in-game mythologies like, say, Mot and the Banished Pantheon. I could definitely see an "end times" event being a good fit in Dark Astoria.

FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.

I think it's a very Avant Garde Idea that must immediately be placed where it rightfully belongs. It must be filed in the Circular File post haste!

Ok. On a less Ironic tone, this idea has about as much chance to fly as a lead brick. Too many specific religion connotations. Nothing to do with the Mayan calendar's supposed "end of the world".

So, uhm... no.

As someone who grew up in Georgia, lemme explain the Confederate costume thing. The asssumption is that only "ignorant Southern Baptists who believe in the Rapture and the soon-arriving return of the Glorious Confederacy."

Also, methinks (hopes) this suggestion was made hugely tongue in cheek. If not, get the pancake out of my game, please.

I always find it hilarious how many people take threads like this seriously.

How about an Oro event. Something timey whimey happens.

Well, I'm not forcing religion on anyone. It is the great deal in pop culture that inspire me for using/celebrating the day in some way.
I don't believe in the Rapture, I just find it a good catchy story.

I like Doctor Roswell's idea about using in-game mythology instead. Or maybe use something related to "the Coming Storm".

Ignoring the whole christian/rapture bit (Hi there. Atheist. Nice to meet you,) I'm so generally irritated by "The calendar resetting means the end of the world!" nonsense - right alongside people with bad hair crediting everything to aliens - I'd find seeing this in game annoying.

But that's me.

This seems too early for a weekend thread

As for big events for December, with the way they've been pacing the recent Issues, we should be starting to get some info on I25 and the Battalion by then

I have yet to see a cat declare a religion other than "Worship me, mortal!"

Glad to meet you too, Atheist. I'm Pagan and I'll be one of the resounding voices of NO.

OK, where to begin. Hm, OK, well for starts this would an endorsement for one specific religion and... [Pancake] it. No amount of rational discussion could save this thread.

You can't end the world on December 21, that's the day I want to have my main character's "13th birthday party"*

"With decorations like streamers and fairy-lights and pinwheels and piñatas and pin-cushions. With goodies like sugar cubes and sugar canes and sundaes and sun-beams and sarsaparilla. And I get to play my favorite-est of favorite fantabulous games like Pin the Tail on the Pony!"

*Which is really just an excuse for me to have a costume contest themed around something other than 'who can wear the least amount of clothes.

I think having a mini-event of an apocalypse of some kind with a CoH slant on it (something a bit campy) would be amusing, but yeah, any religion mixed in with an MMO like this would be a bad idea.

Heh. When put that way, a mini-Apocalypse event WOULD be kinda funny. (Maybe turn on the Halloween event for JUST THAT DAY?)

Makes me think about how they released Issue 7 on 6/6/06. I don't know if that was an intentional joke or it was just ready then but that was PERFECT.

Well, it'd motivate me to dust off my Zombie mastermind Prince of Pieces to persecute the filthy non-believers who've been 'left behind' so to speak...so I vote yes!
