I figured out why Staff Mastery is such a cool set.
I agree completely.
Hopefully someone takes note that sound is an incredibly important detail when it comes to gaming immersion.

Yeah ... we should have a Redname from the sound department drop by to collect their winnings ...
Psychic Shockwave takes the title for Most Heroic Warcry.
But Staff does sound...smashing.

I personally love the sound of the Seed of Hamidon in First Ward. Whenever I hear that sound getting closer, I shudder. Kudos to whoever designed that.
And this thread just makes me want to buy Staff Fighting even more now...

Yah, I KNOW when I am teaming with a staff-user because it sounds like someone is breaking down my door! (in a good way)
And really, although I love Street Justice, sound effects is where that set falls flat. It sounds like you MISS every attack. *WHOOSH* Oh, hey, I did damage! Funny, sounded like a miss...

Staff does have great sounds, especially when you hit the target cap.

Yep, Staff has cool sounds, but the ones really addictive to me are the sounds from Dark Melee punches: blunt, fast, smashy... A saturated Shadow Maul is beauty to be heard (and herd... ;-P )

I'll miss you all.
It's not the animations. I mean yes, the animations are admittedly cool. When my brute's in a fight all the spinning and thwacking is nuts to see on the screen, man. I dig it. But that's not what makes the set so cool.
And it's not the forms. They're useful, and they're fun, and trying to figure out when to switch between them is a neat addition, but that's not what makes Staff Mastery so cool. It's the sound. The thunky-clunking kinda wood sound the staffs make when you beat the tar out of someone in a fight. I can't really explain it, but that sound is ADDICTIVE. I hear it once and I immediately start mashing buttons to try to get that sound again... and again... and again... and again... ... I'm addicted to the sound. That's what makes it cool. ... or EVIL and INSIDIOUS. One of the two. |
-Female Player-
We've had so many cases when Howling Twilight saved us from an incipient teamwipe that we started calling its unique effect "the Sound of Victory!"
edit: on-topic, I love Staff Fighting so much that even when I'm playing something else and a Staff character joins the team, I feel compelled to tell them "I love Staff!"

Staff makes noise?
I'm only ladylike when compared to my sister.
I havent listened to game sounds in over a year, but I found staff sounds weak when I last had them on

Not to rain n anyone's parade but I'm not that much a fan of Staff's sounds either because...
They always seem to play louder than just about anything else. There have been times when I was teaming with a staff player and it sounded like they were right next to my ear when they were around a corner from my character.

Wow, how did you get to listen to staff fighting 8 months before it came out, that is a good trick.
The sounds for SF are OK, my only complaint is they are the same for wood and metal staffs. It would be nice to get a metallic ring hitting a robot with a metal staff.

The most satisfying sound in the game to me will always be the sound of the old fully saturated fulcrum shift. BzzzzzztSNAP! And then the client boots you.
I'm not hugely keen on the Staff sounds. And haven't there been two versions on live? They started off with what someone on the forums described as like 'beating a trashcan inside a whale' and now it's more like someone angrily snapping pencils. I'm hoping at some point the set will find some middle ground. (Angrily snapping pencils inside a trashcan, maybe.)

Death is part of my attack chain.
I pine for the lost sound effect of fulcrum shift when it hit a full sized spawn.

I never play with sound on. Maybe this is why I hated my staff brute?
Is it more fun on a stalker?
