I just...I just wish I was around during the heyday of Godly Controllers.
Does anyone have pictures of 2 Singy's or other crazy multiple Pet Shenanigans? |
Christ, that would have been at *least* 40 imps, and up to 160 imps out at any one point in time.
although you did have to keep an eye on the imps, and recast them constantly.. .but it was something impressive to see
Hell, even by myself (on a Fire/Emp troller) I would regularly have 3 sets out by myself... It made my day when i finally dinged 32 and playing *solo* was no longer something I was afraid to do.
Wish i had the pictures of the 8man Fire/Rad controller team... with 4 lots of imps out each (this was when you would get between 2 and 5 imps out per cast, and you had to keep on recasting them..)

Impressive!
with minimum of 2 per imp spawn, that is 8 per person... so minimum of 64...
With maximum of 5 per spawn (not often to be honest), that would be 20 per player... so 160 maximum.
Still, a sickening number to get out...
And yes, playing with (on average) 8-10 imps out at the same time, i had just enough to time to keep on healing them, and trailing them behind me to the next spawn before I recast a new set.
Not to mention the crack monkeys could benefit from +Recharge then, too, so their attacks were crazy fast.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
I still recall his posted video of the map full of Nighwolves that his scrapper was standing in the midst of and laying waste to the entire spawn with almost no damage taken. This was posted as "proof" for one of the upcoming Regen nerfs.
I still recall other posters that called him on it since no one could replicate anything close to it on Live. I still recall him reluctantly admitting that they'd discovered that the server they were doing their test and video on didn't have the same version of the code as what was on the Live server. I remember him refusing to rerun the tests on the same code as the Live server and post a video but saying instead that the changes would be happening anyway and he didn't need to prove that Regen was over-powered. I still remember the friends that quit the game when that nerf went Live. Most of them quit due to his obstinate stance on the matter and insistence that his vision of what was fun was the only one that was right. |

GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

I remember back in the day when Xmas was teamed with another tanker and a Fire Controller street sweeping Freakshow bosses in Crey's Folly. The tanks would get their attention while the Controller unleashed a mess of Fire Imps that simply devoured them.
Reminded me of the ghostly scrubbing bubbles from the end of Two Towers.

Well, given one "fun" thing for some people was TPing people off buildings or into guard towers (which, both on PI and in the PVP zones, initially had no exit - and no exit big enough for the player to go through)
|
Back in the early alpha days of CoH's development. Building interiors were actually... inside the building. The door opened and you simply walked in. Instead of the current 'teleport' to an underground room.
The devs stated that one of their main reasons for taking this out, was it was too easy for players to intentionally (or otherwise) pull enemies into the buildings and cause issues for other players. |
"Yeah, I was playing my gameboy on an airplane, and kept dying to this boss, running back and dying over and over. it was great!"
|
I've definitely run across a lot of things in the game that seem to be leftovers from somebody who thought "frustrating" and "challenging" were the same thing.

Nothing better than running around with the crack monkey army in that map and just seeing everything melt before your eyes

If you're ever around my home on Infinity, be sure to say hi! I'm @Taxibot Belle, or you can add Taxibot Belle to your friends list and you'll always know when I'm out and about in the city.

I can't get more than 3 minutes into the video because Jack's voice makes me want to punch him in the face.
Also, yay Taxibots! Are you guys only on Infinity or multi-server these days?

Are the Taxibots even still active? I figured that if they were weren't already retired before Freedom, that the widespread availability of travel powers post-Freedom would have given them cause to retire.
*EDIT*
Oh, there they are, a few posts up. :-p
I never made use of their services myself, but I always did have a fond spot for them just based on their community spirit.
The old Dreck mission (you know, the untimed one, that was regularly used to PL people in?)...

At least that setup wasn't as mindnumbing as speed Katies for Pool C rolls...those were the absolute worst.

Yes, I too remember being invited to a team and told to stay at the door while other people played the game for me. It's what inspired me to start my business of going to rich people's houses to eat their food for them. I was SO doing them a favour, no matter what the judge says!

It wasn't "good for the game", but it was fun while it lasted.
And also, let's remember that back in those days 'the game' itself was much more aggravating and slow paced.

In the spirit of the Taxis I used to hang out in Perez with my high level emp/elec buffing and healing low level street hunting teams.
So then, Jack is the guy I should blame for things like encountering Martial Gloom in a safeguard mission at level 10, and watching him stun me into complete helplessness the instant I run into him, then kicking me to death while I can do nothing? (twice - once in the bank and then again when I tried to catch him at the manhole cover escape point)
I've definitely run across a lot of things in the game that seem to be leftovers from somebody who thought "frustrating" and "challenging" were the same thing. |
But my absolute favorite example of Jack's Idea of Fun was the (in)famous Front Loaded Mission.
You'd hit a mission, the archetypal one that drove me totally crazy was in Skyway, a lost mission where you're supposed to defeat the boss, Sneaky Pete or something like that.
So you jog all over hell and gone to get to the mission, Skyway being a giant PITA to get around back then at a zone appropriate level, and you hop in the door, and oh boy look, it's a HUGE spawn of purple and red con lost, RIGHT there.
So that's pretty much a team wipe if you're not expecting it.
Go to the hospital. Jog around to a store, stock up on inspirations, jog back to the mish, everyone buffs up and goes in.
Using the old 'door trick' (you could zone out and get all your health back) you'd eventually whittle down the spawn.
And, you know, it would actually make you feel pretty badass- it's a ridiculous challenge for level 10,11,12 characters, and you did it! It probably took half an hour just for that spawn, counting jogging time, but BOOYAH!
Victory!
So you're all hyped up, and go charging down the hall...and the next spawn is a lot smaller, and it's whites an yellows?
Huh, weird.
And you keep going, and you come to a spawn that's BLUES and whites?
WTH?
So you steamroll over pile of these wimps and you finally get to the BOSS, the big head of the whole operation, Sneaky Pete!
And he's a GRAY, and doesn't survive one volley from the team.
Jack went on and on and ON about why that was a "fun" way to structure a mission, and along with Don't Worry Regen! it remains my defining memory of him.

After getting a taste of it, I sent my two Blasters to the farm for some help getting past the level 35-40 xp dead zone. I wasn't too concerned with my rate of achievement before that, but I knew my favorite character was about to get neutered to point of not-much-fun, so I wanted him over the hump where all we had was street sweeping.

I still occasionally reference "Statesman Fun(tm)", which may or may not have anything to do with actual fun.
I will always be proud to have been part of the Taxibots. If there is less call for them these days, that's a testament to how the game has improved; the group was created to fill a need (a few of them, in fact), and did so admirably, IMO.
I remember when Issue 2 gave us respecs, and seeing whole teams of heroes who really truly needed one flopping out of the front doors of Terra Volta and faceplanting on the concrete.

The Front Loaded missions sound like they'd be okay, so long as it was rare and broke up the pace of normal mission teaming. say, if it was the second of like 5 missions in a task force, so you know nobody's going to try and solo it.
you could have it all
