I gleefully remember the last room in the Eden trial, having a granite tank herd the ENTIRE bottom cave floor (something like 300 crystal DE) into one of the big craters, and Nova-ing EVERYTHING. It was amazing.

It was pretty great.

My emp/elec was always in high demand from fire tanks who needed Clear Mind.

I think my all time favorite was street sweeping in Perez when a tank came through herding the entire map- when he had them all gathered up at the end of the horseshoe a blaster pal of his nuked the entire pile.

Ah, the good old days!

Not that I'd trade them for the modern game, goodness no....but map herding was a great big pile of fun.

Heh. Like Billy Joel said, "The good old days weren't always good and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems."

I forget - was the dumpster diving the final straw that broke herding's back, or was it the player response to the first attempts by the devs to tune powers down a bit to cut down on the herding?

Can somebody explain, for us relative newcomers, the comments about griefers and building interiors?

Somehow it was more fun when they weren't all level 54 bosses.

Well, the dumpster is definitely what drove Jack round the bend.
I still recall that rant of his.

Well, given one "fun" thing for some people was TPing people off buildings or into guard towers (which, both on PI and in the PVP zones, initially had no exit - and no exit big enough for the player to go through) ....

As far as the "herd the map" bit - sure, it was, possibly, "fun" for some people, but if it weren't (heh) nuked, it would have killed COH. Tank herds, Emp might follow behind and heal them every once in a while, herd to corner, blaster nukes, off to the next floor. Meanwhile everyone else is standing around going "er, yeah. Fun. Can someone tell me when we move to the next one?"

That and having to match up exemplars to higher level players for TFs. Ugh. What a pain. Hope nobody exemping DC'd.

Back in the early alpha days of CoH's development. Building interiors were actually... inside the building. The door opened and you simply walked in. Instead of the current 'teleport' to an underground room.

The devs stated that one of their main reasons for taking this out, was it was too easy for players to intentionally (or otherwise) pull enemies into the buildings and cause issues for other players.

And I'm sure, as said above, it was a memory issue as well.

Another more recent bit of "fun" was to put an Ouroboros portal over a ground-based misison door - this was especially "popular" on the sub in IP used for the STF, making it impossible to enter without being taken to Ouroboros.
It's the reason that they changed the portal from being activated by clicking on its base to being activated by clicking the top of it.

I still recall that rant of his.
I still recall his posted video of the map full of Nighwolves that his scrapper was standing in the midst of and laying waste to the entire spawn with almost no damage taken. This was posted as "proof" for one of the upcoming Regen nerfs.

I still recall other posters that called him on it since no one could replicate anything close to it on Live.

I still recall him reluctantly admitting that they'd discovered that the server they were doing their test and video on didn't have the same version of the code as what was on the Live server.

I remember him refusing to rerun the tests on the same code as the Live server and post a video but saying instead that the changes would be happening anyway and he didn't need to prove that Regen was over-powered.

I still remember the friends that quit the game when that nerf went Live. Most of them quit due to his obstinate stance on the matter and insistence that his vision of what was fun was the only one that was right.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I remeber when they added exemplaring.

And how it used to work before TFs would auto-exemp you to their level.

Let's see, what were some of his other ones.

"Hey, Blasters, here's Defiance 1.0! Be sure to tell people not to heal you!"

"Yeah, I was playing my gameboy on an airplane, and kept dying to this boss, running back and dying over and over. it was great!"

Paraphrased, of course.

That would be one of the terrible ones. He was really best at world building.

If Masterminds didn't suck, they'd be the most powerful AT in the game.

Here's how we reacted to Jack's proclamations back in the day. My response is in yellow.

There are many times I wish they could put an old archived version of CoH up on the Test Server for a month or so... say from around July when I joined... after the 40-50 stuff came in but before Hollows and the "Eyeball invasion"... just to remind folks what the game used to be like... including myself.

Remember trying to trade influence with your friends, and having to click a spinner to advance each digit, and you could only do it in ... i forget...was it 9,999 or 99,000 maximum amounts?

No Stores on map etc... Hollows time was when they added a ding to the elevator and swinging open gates and doors if I remember right too...

Yes, I too remember being invited to a team and told to stay at the door while other people played the game for me. It's what inspired me to start my business of going to rich people's houses to eat their food for them. I was SO doing them a favour, no matter what the judge says!
