Billy Murray will not be in Ghostbusters 3
Kind of a shame though. But he's been waffling back and forth for a while and this thing has been in production limbo off and on for faaarr too long.
Honestly at this point I think enough time has passed that it's too likely it won't be that good.
Too bad the movie will probably be terrible anyways.
Just like every other movie that's a sequel 15-25 years after the original was made.

I rewatched the original (for the 800th time) the other night when it came on TV.
About half way through it I said to myself, "You know what, screw Bill, the 80's are being milked to death by hollywood anyways, might as well get something we all actually wanted done out of the deal, besides after seeing him in the posters for his latest film... I don't think I'd want him dragging around the screen anyways."
So to this news I say;
Yay!!
(Just for reference, Venkman is my favorite GBer, but he's not the end all be all of the franchise.)

Well Murray's been staying away from big budget movies for sometime now. Closest to big budget would have been Zombieland but since he played himself you could say it wasn't really a roll per se. He's been trying to play off his stereotype character of the 80s.
I liked his small part in Moonlight Kingdom.

I absolutely love the Ghostbusters, but at this point I think it'll be a miracle if a third movie ever gets made, and the quality issues worry me too. Dan Ackroyd's always been the creative driving force behind Ghostbusters and he kind of strikes me as being the real-life Ray Stanz: Bill Murray dropping out and Dan cheerfully responding with "it'll be great anyway" just sounds so much like Ray answering Egon's "this place should be condemned" by sliding down the rickety pole and announcing "this place is perfect, we'll take it!"
"Now, I'm not saying this guy at Microsoft sees gamers as a bunch of rats in a Skinner box. I'm just saying that he illustrates his theory of game design using pictures of rats in a Skinner box."

This is about the 37th 'definite' statement on something regarding this movie I've seen in the last 20+ years. I'll believe statements about who is in or out of the movie only after I've seen it (probably on Netflix unless they do something to spark my interest). I wouldn't put it past Akroyd and Murray to be trying to play some kind of practical joke. "We said Bill wouldn't be in the movie. We didn't say anything about his ghost."
I've never yet taken a hit from a bad guy skidding across the floor on his keister.

There simply doesn't need to be a third one. Period. Let the first one be left alone... oh, wait they did a second one and it *blew chunks*.
Time to just let it go. Not even a reboot, just... move on with life, Ackroyd, et all.

The funny part of all this?
"OMG! It's only been a couple of years and they're already making a sequal?"
"OMG! It's been to many years and they're going to make a sequal?"
Point being, making a sequal will have people on both sides complaining.
When all that needs to be done is for them to make a fun and entertaining movie

I loved the original, thought the sequel was fine aside from Murray obviously mailing it in, and have zero interest in watching elderly versions of those characters shambling through a film animated by nothing except a bankroll from Sony or whoever.
there's certainly an entertaining film to be made on the basic Ghostbusters premise.
It's unfortunate that corporate money refuses to fund that movie, instead insisting on the perceived safety of a familiar brand name.

Wouldn't Evolution count as a Ghostbuster sequel?
Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"

Actually I think GB3 will be a better movie without Murray. Yes, Venkman is funny but if this is going to be some kind of passing the torch movie, then him missing could be the whole premise.
Opening scene: Venkman's funeral with Oscar Barret(-Venkman?) doing the eulogy and the whole "Peter wasn't my biological father, but..." thing.
...
Could be interesting, that's all I'm saying.

However I don't think this will be the case, I think Murray won't be in it.
Also I agree with posts above that say that he isn't the be all and end all to Ghostbusters. His performance in GB2 could have been better and he's been holding out for all these years for assorted reasons (mostly money I would think), so yeah since it is a passing of the torch to a new team then make it without him. Ray, Igon and Winston will likely be support roles and trainers for the new team anyway while the new team takes over, hardly need Venkemen for that.

Murray and Weaver were big plots in the first 2, they need to do something different.
I did like the 2nd movie. Not as good as the first, but that's not saying much. The first was awesome.
