Total Recall

Anyone else see it yet?

The story felt like The Bourne Identity or The Long Kiss Goodnight, but in a sci-fi setting. There were essentially no twists to the story, and worst of all: NO KUATO!

I did learn that in the future we will drink Heineken from futuristic bottles and all music will be dubstep.

Darn! I was hoping that at the end we find out that he never left the chair in Recall and it was all part of his fantasy package.

I know Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale together would be part of mine.

From what I read about it, it is nothing like the first one except names and that is it, even the plot is different. Sorry even if everything was exactly the same it still wouldn't be without Arnold.

True. It would be better. Assuming of course that they weren't looking for someone worse than Arnold.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a child of the 80s and its hard to diminish the impact that Arnold left on 80s action flicks but I'd rather take the reboot on its own merit (when I finally go check it out) instead of comparing it to a guilty pleasure classic.

I wish they would reboot The Running Man (outside of The Hunger Games) along the lines of something closer to the short story. (could make a heck of a mini-series)

Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"
*Arc #95278-Gathering the Four Winds -3 step arc; challenging - 5 Ratings/3 Stars (still working out the kinks)
*Arc #177826-Lights, Camera, Scream! - 3 step arc, camp horror; try out in 1st person POV - 35 Ratings/4 Stars

Total Recall sort of started the entire "Bourne Identity" genre.

I've seen enough King based mini series to know it would be a disappointment.

"Recall" centers around implanted memories (in the book, one of these is being a government agent) which may or may not be real.

"Bourne" is a story about an amnesiac secret agent (in the book, shot in the head) trying to recover his lost memories.

Personally don't see one as inspiration for the other. YMMV.

BTW, had to check dates on the written versions. "We Can Remeber it for You Wholesale" (if there is anyone out there who is not aware, "Total Recall" was very loosely based on this P.K. Dick story) was published in 1966, "The Bourne Identity" in 1980. I had always assumed Ludlum's work was much older.

Would love to see "The Running Man" filmed even remotely faithfully to the book. Richards (in the book) is a real underdog, a man who is literally at the end of his rope. A man desperate enough to take any shot, even if it's being "the sucker in a rigged game." (I hope that quote is correct).

I'm a big fan of King, but his Bachman books have a darkness all their own.

Cannot agree more. Arnold is terrible.

Arnold's big schtick was "Hey! Look! Arnold Schwarzenegger!"

I thought it was flexing and saying one liners. You got to admit, there was a lot of them.

And violence. Lots and lots of violence. I think my favorite is in Commando when gets to the bad guy's HQ. I mean, sure, Predator is good fun, but there's something decidedly hilarious about using a rake to skewer a random mook.

I found Arnold Swartzwhatever filled comedy roles better than action roles.

I haven't seen the movie yet. I probably won't until it is out on DVD. I always feel a little uneasy about movies that are remakes of movies that I watched myself.

Aint seen it but from the previews it looked like another Bourne movie but heard it suppose to be closer to the original book than the the original movie was. Also a friend told me that they dont even go to mars.

I haven't seen the movie, but having loved the short story and so read the plot spoilers and reviews to find out if that's the case, it's not... it's really not. Total Recall was a very loose adaptation of "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" and this is a very loose remake of Total Recall, so what little bits of "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" survived in the first one have now gone totally out the window.

Yeah, I saw it. Arnold was silly in it, and the whole thing where they got in a circle and shot themselves? Totally stupid.

But the bug eyed bit at the end was pretty decent. And Sharon Stone was yummy, I like her character. Michael Ironside is never a bad thing either.

Didn't like the traitorous to the cause taxi driver guy. Dude can't keep track of his kids.

/wait... They remade that crap?! OH. Well, no haven't seen it. *checks about*... Ooh, flying at a man's face with her legs spread Kate Beckinsale? Hm. I could totally watch that on DVD when it comes out in about a month or so, given ticket sales...

Philip K. Dick did. Pretty much all his stories question identity in one way or another.

On the original movie, I do think it would have been better with less Arnie and Gratuitous Violence. The story really demands a more intelligent hard SF approach, and it sounds like the remake doesn't rise to the challenge.

I really should do something about this signature.

It was what is was and I'm glad for that. An incredibly fun movie that went hand in hand with the decade that spawned it.

It would have been a completely different experience altogether if they would've went all cerebral with it (not necessarily better or worse).
