City of Heroes and City of Villains *used* to be kindof-sortof separate games. They were merged years ago. It sounds like MMORPG.com's information is out of date. It's all just one big "City of Heroes" product. You get to COV by choosing "Villain" in the tutorial or (if you skip it) when you enter the game as a villain.

thanx. someone on that website should be fired then. busy downloading the game at the moment (might take a while on 384k adsl.. it's all i can afford at the moment in south africa.) but i'll get there. really excited to try this out. diablo 3 was a utter failure. so thinking a new genre might work.

To add to what Memphis_Bill and Dechs Kaison have already stated:

It's all one game now.

It is still, at it's core, a subscription based game.

They have added a Hybrid F2P model to it as well. You can play most of the content from 1-50 for free, but there are parts of the game that won't be available to you unless you purchase that system, earn enough Paragon Reward Tokens or subscribe. For example, use of the in-game Auction House, the Alignment system, starting a character in Praetoria, the First Ward mission content, the Signature Story Arcs, Mastermind AT, Controller AT and more. Non-subscribers do not get in-game support but they do have support available through the Support website and email.

Some systems are only available through subscription such as the Incarnate System, the ability to create Super Groups and bases, pay base rent and get in-game support.

Some powersets are free to all, some are free to subscribers/purchasable by non-subscribers and some are purchasable by all players. The same thing goes for costumes and costume sets.

A good resource for the game is ParagonWiki and the rest of the Titan Network. Some good pages to help understand the City of Heroes: Freedom F2P system are the Paragon Rewards page, the Paragon Market page and the City of Heroes: Freedom page.

You may also want to look at the official website's City of Heroes: Freedom Overview page and the pages it links to.

If you have any questions, the community here is good about answering them.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

NCSOFT may take away our servers and beloved dev team, but they can't break our spirit and community. with all your power, NCSOFT, your victory will be bitter-sweet. I, personally will be there to laugh at you when you face-plant into the ground.

It might put people off playing Villains?

Well, I think we can survive missing out on the 2 people who might have wanted to play a Villain for free

I think you'll like it. It's fun once you get the hang of controls (maybe tweak some settings accordingly)

I'm mostly on freedom server right now. As a suggestion I'd go to the more populated servers (freedom/virtue) to get more team invites.

Ryzzhan, RUN! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

Just kidding, welcome to the The City & I hope you enjoy your time here! Been here myself going on 3 years and love just about every minute of it, good stories, fun power combos, and the community is a great one (even if the judgement is a bit off as they let me in here.)

Thanks to everyone that helped make me a welcomed part of the community, and for giving me over 3 years of some of the best gaming I've been able to take part in. May the next game bring many friendships and maybe reconnect to some old CoH friends.

Since nobody's mentioned it quite this way...(and hopefully I'm remembering things close enough to right)

The Game started as City of Heroes with a required sub of upto $15/mo.

Issue 6 (I'm pretty sure) introduced the Villians side of the game, but you had to purchase the upgrade/addon content. It was probably something like $20 at the time, but it was a one time thing.

A few other content addons worked like that until Going Rogue (which you still had to purchase) at which point all previous content was unlocked, but again, still the same sub.

And then Freedum...

You didn't have to own City of Heroes to play City of Villains. It was an expanshalone. You could play just City of Heroes if that was all you bought. You could play just City of Villains if that was all you bought. If you owned both and had them both on the same account you could play both. After NCSoft bought out Cryptic's portion of the game, they combined them into one game so that owning either game gave you both games.

There were no other addons that worked like that. There were some booster packs that were released for purchase but there was no content in them, just costumes, auras, emotes and at times a power.

When Going Rogue was released it was a full expansion, meaning you had to own the (by then combined) City of Heroes/City of Villains game and have an active subscription. With the change to the City of Heroes: Freedom model, they combined Going Rogue with the City of Heroes/City of Villains game for subscribers. Free/Premium players can purchase Going Rogue if they can find a copy or if they already had it on their account before Freedom it would still be available to them. Otherwise, you can only purchase a la carte items like the Alignment System or the ability to create a Praetorian.

All other issues were Free until Going Rogue came out. All issues since Going Rogue have been Free.

EDIT: According to the NCSoft Press Release from November 1, 2005 the price for City of Villains was $49.99 for the standard edition and $69.99 for the Collector's Edition.

EDIT 2: The Going Rogue Complete Collection was priced at $39.99 at release. The purchase from the NCSoft store of just the Going Rogue expansion was $29.99 and they also had the Going Rogue Item Pack avaialble for $10 dollars.
