Words allowed in names

So in my 4 years of playing this game i have never been genericed till recently. My elec/thermal corr was named Godamn Electric Bill (couldn't fit 2 d's). Now I'm not complaining, I honestly should have seen it coming. I'm just wondering what words are and are not allowed, and if there's a list of these words anywhere. Would I be allowed to say just Damn Electric Bill? or do i have to say darn or dang?
Also for some reason I was under the impression that if they change your name you get a rename token the first time, but apparently that's not the case?

Not aware of a compiled black list of words... I guess it's just a "best judgement" kind of thing. I would think to avoid "damn" but perhaps "the Damned Electric Bill" might be good, due to the fact that there is an enemy called "Damned". Just a thought. Oh, use the title "the" to save space.

You don't get a rename token, you get an email that requests three new names and they choose the least offensive one. Or tell you to take a hike if none of them are inoffensive, and leave you generic.

#1. If a player reports you and your name is found to be in violation of the rules you get genericed regardless of how old the character is.

#2. No idea if there is a 'list' of words banned for character name creation (Personally I hope there is). If there is such a list, I highly doubt the developers would reveal such a list. The reason being is so that players do not find a way to bypass the filter by spelling words differently or putting spaces between the letters or any other creative way to make an offensive character name.

#3. As has been suggested: check your email you have registered for contact with your NC Soft Master account. The email should tell you to file a support ticket with the reference number in the email and give them 3 names to have them manually change your character name for you. You can have 1 name as a priority and if it is taken they will choose another of the 3. If all names are taken, or not allowed, try giving them some more names. If you can't reach an agreement on a name because they are all taken, buy a character name token from the Paragon Market and change it yourself.

After my first genericizing.... I actually read the EULA. They pretty much covered everything to cover their PANCAKES. I remember one of the things mentioned was NO BODYPARTS! so "fist of fury" is technically a no no.

The new EULA is much shorter but very broad reaching. If someone complains because they are offended, or if any GM thinks you might be offensive.... you can be nerfed. You can sit and read it for yourself, but you have to realize that NCsoft owns the characters you create and reserve the right to do anything as they seem fit.

Sadly people seem to be very thin skinned and easily offended, so you should tread lightly with your names.

I would suggest that possibly the word God in the name as we all know if you have the filter set and type God it comes out weird

That's always been the way it worked. Several years ago I had to rename a character because someone was offened by the word Phart. I laughed at it and renamed the character the same name in another language.

So what... this game gives more control to the players who are easily offended?

That offends me. I want that to change right now!

Whoever complains still has to hope a GM agrees with them. And if the GM doesn't and they persist they are the ones that risk punishment from the GM's for harassment.

So there is a check and balances to keep thing from being abused.

I had to do a really difficult project in school once so seeing your handle all over the forum offends me. I demand recompense!!

This works and I have used it several times to use a name I wanted but was already taken in English. I have a Dark/Dark Corruptor named Doctor Tenebris.. Tenebris is LATIN for Dark. I have a DP/Poison Corruptor known as Nera Vedona ... go to the google translator and type that in translating for italian to English .... it comes out the widow black. Now tell me Marvel comix has an Italian version of the Black Widow! Now watch someone decide to generic me over this post lol

Heck if you really want to get creative.. Go to google and "google" Elvish translater or Klingon. I have a Arch/Ice blaster who is named Lorien Sindenari' She is an elf warrior maiden and I used a translater to turn a normal name I liked into an elf name.

She overheard a couple of "young" people shouting a bad word back and forth. Now the city is "asking citizens to vote at the annual Town Meeting on Monday (today) to flush potty mouths by granting police the power to issue $20 civil tickets to anyone who publicly "accosts" another person verbally with profanity."

As you can see.......all it takes is for 1 person to be offended over nothing.

Note: If you don't believe me about this news story, do a Google search for "middleborough mass fine for cursing in public".
That's some awesome sexist anecdotal "evidence" there. You don't suppose that maybe had more to do with her age than it did her gender, do you?

...You really went there, eh?

In any case, no it's not true and your observations are flawed.

If the town is having a vote, then it seems to me that more than one person cares about the quality of living in their neighborhood.

If you have to say, "no offense but", you know what follows is offensive. This invalidates your entire post and I stopped reading right there.

Also, it's not true.

Also, I think that is a FANTASTIC idea. I *love* creative cursing...using Ye Olde Englishe, making up curse words, substituting something else as a curse work (this forum abuses pancakes a lot). Brilliant. F-bomb? Boring.

lol...thats a great sexist throwback as others have pointed out.
I love the interwebs.

To play along with your notion, you are obviously wrong and your own perspective does you in.
NO OFFENSE AND ALL, but how could a woman possibly be offended by trivial things such as this if theyre in the kitchen?

**couldnt help myself**

Back on point...as someone else said, common sense has always served me well when it comes to naming CoX toons.

Yeah I knew I was asking for it with that name. Anyway I checked my e-mail and there was nothing there :/

To those I may have offended I'm sorry. My opinion about women was false, but the news report on the subject was true.

I did this as a test to prove a point: people can be easily offended by words. Whether it is a character name in a MMO, or just you politely expressing your opinion of an observation in life. It sucks that people can be so easily offended and hopefully one day humanity will learn not to be. But until then we have to strive to better ourselves and try to have consideration for others.

Sorry for the mild uproar I caused, but hopefully you can see the point.

And yes, my "observation" was not true about women. Men can be just as easily offended.

Edited for typos 'cause I'm a N00B.

Would you by chance have another email registered with the game? It is strange you didn't get one. Is it possible you have been genericed in the past? I'm not sure how it works, but my guess (I could be wrong) is if you've gotten in trouble for a character name before, they will basically force you to stick with the Generic 000 000 000 name or purchase a name change token and only the first time you get genericed they will change your name for free. Edit: (Probably not your case)

I was genericed myself about a week or two after I started playing. Not just my character name but also my costumes. Apparently "Adam of Eternia" and a costume that looked like a blue man with a hood and yellow skeleton face was against the rules. I asked in help what happened to my character name and after the snarky "YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID" comment by 1 player, others explained the situation and told me to check my email (I had no idea what happened since I was new to the game) I did and had what was described here. In my case I double checked the name I wanted by way of new character creation and found it was available. This was the only name I gave them. It was a character name I have had in Guild Wars at the time for over 5 years (as of May 2012 the character is 6 years old).

That character has been known since my genericization as Lothor The Evil. And I learned my lesson. I didn't think the name I originally had would be considered infringing.

Edit: I was also giving a free costume change token for each of the costume slots I had at the time for that character but the costume tokens were given automatically. Only the name I had to have them manually change.

I've been wondering about this myself. I have a great name I want to use, but it has the word "Hell" in it so I'm afraid I'll offend somebody and get generic'd.

Though we do have Hellions and one of their boss types is Girlfriend From Hell so I guess I'd be fine with the name I want. I'm probably just being paranoid.

You'll be fine. This is one of the weird double-standards I cannot figure out. Any references to evil, Satan, demons, hell is "ok" but references to good, 'God, angels, heaven is not. I don't want to turn this into a religious discussion or anything of the sort, this is just my observation.

As an atheist, I find that quite... annoying.

I once tried to get the name "Hymenoptera" for a character, and found that I couldn't get it. Thought that was odd, considering that it's the order name for a bunch of insects, including wasps. I asked a GM about it, and he said that he couldn't tell, but thought it was because it contained the word "hymen" and it was being filtered. I just laughed and moved on.

Disagreement does not equal offense.

I've never heard of anyone having a character name genericized for containing the words good, angel or heaven, and I very much doubt I ever will. Using the formal name of a deity can be problematic because of the potential to use it in ways offense to the worshipers of that deity, but for the record I have a friend who does have a character whose name contains the word "God" (Hammer of God or some such, I think) and it has never been genericized in 3 years.
