I warned the team before we started that I had been playing for less than 10 days and that I had never set foot in that dungeon before. Despite this, they wanted me to tank (I had a tank build and over 1200 HP more than the next highest). When I failed to somehow anticipate the special attack of a unique boss that I had never seen or heard of previously, the jerk started calling me names. Because, you know, hurling insults usually helps to clarify tactics.

The helpful person tried to get them to shut up and sent me some amusing tells. One went something like, "Don't pay attention to him. It's easy for some lousy DPS to second-guess the tank. You're doing fine."

Anyway, we finished the dungeon. Still, not a good sign (to me) to run into that level of stupidity so soon.
I've done the three Solomon Island dungeons probably 60 times between them and my 3 alts over the past couple of months. I have run into 2 "jerks" and it was a bit of a stretch to call them jerks.

    1. Hell risen - guy was shouting out mid-afternoon for a team, we got the 5 together. He asks what role people are doing.... me and two others are damage dealers (me because I had no aggro control or healing skills, dunno why the other 2 wanted to be damage) After the first boss he turns and raves about how long it took and how dare people with more than 2500hp call themselves damage dealers. I offered to leave and let him find someone else to deal damage for him, he was quick to apologize and say "no, just for next time get some better attack rating gear and less hp gear". We went on to finish.

    2. Darkness War - first attempt as a healer for me and I was very undergeared for the role; our tank was the only person experienced with the dungeon (I had run it once before but had no idea how the fights actually worked). First boss we managed OK. Second we wiped and wiped and wiped and wiped again... she'd just run like crazy into each group and not give me a second to heal her up between groups and no interest in listening to any alternative suggestions on the fight. Eventually she quit on us (but in fairness to her, it was taking a looong time and she may very well have run out of time to try again)

Just anecdotes - I think you got lucky (or unlucky) to run into a twit this early in your experience with dungeons. The vast majority of normal run dungeons are very friendly fun events in my experience.

How many difficulty ranks are there above 'very hard'? I'm obviously going to need them.

FYI, I'm recreating Ironblade (broadsword/regen). I wanted to check the survivability of blades with nothing backing it up and it's pretty damn good.

The "difficulty" is entirely based on your gear QL. There are "very hard" missions that you'll waltz through and "easy" missions that'll kick your tail if you don't have the right powers / build yet. Pretty much, you can ignore the difficulty ranking. They don't mean much except whether or not you'll take an xp hit for doing stuff (and the hit comes on the higher difficulty - it is a power leveling inhibitor).

  5. I agree SC is amazing (no where near as amazing as Egypt is when you get there ). There are some famously frustrating missions, don't panic when you get 'em just toughen up a bit and try again.

Don't let the solo instances dissuade you from teaming - you stay in the team it is just that each member has to do the instance alone. You can still chat and help each other with hints. It is not as fun as being able to work together to shoot some zombie in the face but... it isn't too bad.
  6. Duck! there seems to be a forum moderator sneaking around these parts...
  7. With the direction that thread was going, is anybody surprised (even a little) that it went away?

Looks like this isn't in place yet... lots of folk who've completed halloween missions still haven't received their expees

We had a call last night in chan for some help doing cat god. I jumped in right away, even though the broke nature of the stupid quest meant I got no reward or experience. It looks like this will be retroactively applied to our accounts if we finished it though, I think....

In any case, we are more than willing to help and assist!

Yes, the patch going in right now is going to add the xp to any character that has finished the mission but not gotten exp for it.

I've got one alt just starting in Egypt, one still running BM and a third who has just stepped into SC - always willing to team up with anybody on the channel.

Perhaps the point you should have addressed was why he was in a situation where he had to post it on the TSW forums.

I also struggled to find a team in TSW during the 3 day trial, which was disappointing as I'm used to getting into a team with ease in this game - and I prefer to team.

I have just bought TSW and subbed, but the team aspect really needs to improve if it's going to be a long term game for me - as it's a deal breaker if I'm forced to play solo most of the time.

Essentially I'm giving the game 30 days to see if it's going to be for me, but I think that if I come across other players who use the term 'panties in a wad' .... that 30 days may shorten considerably.
JJames posted what I was thinking only nicer... "goodbye cruel world" posts are generally frowned on by mods in any game forum and mocked by the population until they get removed.

If you prefer to team - have you tried calling out "looking for a newbie team in Kingsmouth" in the looking for team channel? Or "forming a newbie team to run missions" in general/looking for team? Even here in City, you had to scream out lft to get picked up.

As another anecdote - I've not had any trouble finding a team when I wanted one and I've frequently been scooped up by other people in the wild who were doing the same missions as me without needing to ask. I formed a Cat God dungeon team in 3 minutes the other day by shouting out "got two need three more". Teaming is not hard (especially if you /chat #coh-refugees )

I think the only valid complaint about solo/team play is some of the missions are forced solo. The devs are aware that was a mistake and are limiting them in future development. But even when you are forced into an instance by yourself you still have your group intact for chatter or helpful hints on what to do.

    Where to now?

Anybody thinking of The Secret World but holding off... there's a 3 day trial on now and half-price purchase on the game this weekend. Good time to try it out.

That's community speculation - there has been nothing from TSW devs to say they're going F2P except that that functionality is available to them through their billing system. I don't think you'll see TSW go F2P for a while yet.

I will prabably join those if CoH really shuts down, I am still hoping and fighting for a change.

    @Arda
I bought TSW yesterday and tried out some of the first things... wow it is hilarious to be such a newb again Controls and game-play are similar but just a little off so I"m feeling a lot like I did 7 years ago here. I was laughing about the tab-target in game last night - so used to being able to target anything that was close enough to render on screen; in TSW you see stuff before you're close enough to tab target (although you can mouse-target earlier). I kept hitting F to try to move into range...

The puzzle missions are very well done (and I understand the later ones are even trickier) with some actual thinking needed and a fully functional in-game web browser for people who don't enjoy the thinking so much. Apparently FunCom have even created a bunch of real-life web pages as part of some of their puzzles.

The atmosphere is fantastic... really creepy; first time in a loooong time that I"ve played with sound on. The combat is fantastic with most focus on boss fights and not so much on "trash". From the get-go you're able to fight 6-8 trash mobs and come out on top; bosses (EB's / AV's) can certainly put the hurt on you though. Big experience comes from the quest line (mission completes) and not so much from the kills, but you do get xp for kills too.

Costume fans will be disappointed with the character customization I suspect. Their characters are no where near as customizable as ours. All males are exactly the same size/shape; all females are exactly the same size/shape. They're still working on more clothes but the options are currently quite limited. The good thing is that your clothes are purely cosmetic like our costumes are.... your gear is a ring, an amulet, a belt and ??? something else for your head but it does not show on your avatar - so not everybody runs around in a blue tunic because that's the best jacket for your level.

Anyway, it is great fun for me at this point.

There's a campaign of their players going on on their forums right now to get the free trial back asap - their primary argument: CoX folk need somewhere to land

I too was disappointed to see the 3 day trial gone when I tried to get in on it.

That looks really interesting tbh. I don't follow mmo news so didn't know it was out there. CoH for me but looks like there may be a parachute if the rescue attempts fail.
  18. LOL, I actually did that yesterday with my end of the world project character - The Perez Park loop.
  19. If I were making a new dom for a last run, it would be elec/earth/??? Big stable sleep patch and big hammers of doom. Knockdown, sap, smash. Damn I wish there was more time
  20. My first 50 and namesake will be on on Nov 30. I hope beyond hope he'll be able to come back on Dec 1 - but he'll be on on the 30th of Nov for sure
  21. I, personally, hope not. A sudden drop in activity just justifies their action. As things stand, I've got 91 days of joy to suck up and I hope to suck up every little bit of joyful memory out of the game I can in those 91 days.
  22. So, even after being in the city for 7.5 years, there are a ton of things I've never gotten around to doing. There was always more time on the horizon to get to them. I guess I have 91 days left to:

    1. Solo the Praetorian AVs arch - this one is in progress and going quite well.
    2. Get a lvl 50 blaster. I've never managed to get to 50 on a blaster, I think I want to make a water/fire for the end of the world. It would be nice to get him/her incarnated up but I don't know if that's realistic... we'll see I guess. The market I expect is going to go well before the days are done, (s)he may not be easy to IO out. But again, I'll have to see what I can do with it.
    3. Support any efforts to save the game.
  23. Thanks. I still have 5 days to find out for sure before my current month of subscription expires.... I hope you're right; the 50's I have there are my current favorites and I'd like to end it out there. If not... well I guess I can go to Freedom for the last 90 days
  24. Do we lose the exalted server at the end of our "subscriptions" given the crappy news?

Used to be, but is no longer the case... take a look at the scrapper thread, you'll see most of them are with incarnate powers now.
