Have you done the Shadow Shard all of the way through?

I've started the Shadow Shard once. It was okay but I stopped playing it. Largely I think because I normally build characters for teaming, so soloing is not much fun.

But I'm thinking of starting a character in Praetoria - probably a stalker or brute. And then I might solo a bunch of content that I've never done.

So is Shadow Shard worth playing or just worth seeing (I've seen it)?

Play it all of the way through?

Do the TF's from start to finish. That's the actual plot of the Shadow Shard (oh, and some villains missions and of course the new DA arcs and the DD iTrial).

Indeed, but maybe he means the Task Forces? I've done the first three on one character.

I did the first 3 back to back on the first ever 2XP weekend - it was...challenging

I've never played through the contacts in the Shard, but I have done all the TFs there multiple times. Though I just might go play through those contacts now that you've brought it up.

The TFs are really the heart of the Shadow Shard story. The missions introduce a few minor points, but several of the more canon elements were in missions that were removed for various reasons (kora fruit runs, anyone?). You're going to get the large portion of the story doing the TFs, which is admittedly a slog in some cases, but I love the whole... otherness in the Shadow Shard. Really, letting villains in and either adding a few new Shard TFs or spiffing up the old ones could revitalize things somewhat.

Have to agree with what I have seen here so far. I have characters thaqt have done all of the available TFs in the Shard.. aside from that you have a serious of contacts that offer repeatable missions like Levantra in the RWZ.. there are no story arcs.

So being "literal" if you have completed all of the available task Forces offered in the various regions of the Shadow Shard.. you have finished the zone.( so to speak)

Any numb er of threads have suggested a revamp of these zones.. they are quite impressive to look at and offer some unique villain groups to battle along with more chances to fight Nemesis, Crey and COT. It's even been suggested turning the entire area into another CoOp zone so COV players can enjoy it as well. No idea if this will EVER happen but I for one would enjoy it.

On a good team Sara Moore and Faathim are mostly fun and Doc Q is not horribly horribly painful -- you can do his TF in around 3 hours or so if you're moving.

Nothing really redeems the Justin Augustine TF for me, but at least it's not hours long.

I've played though all the shard Taskforces multiple times as well have all the shard contacts unlocked on my main character and all before we had the travel options that we have today and before the nice auto exemplar system, or heck before the gravity geysers were marked on the map. I will have to say that few things have sucked as much as being 7 hours into the Quarterfield TF and to have the player exemplaring you crash and be booted from the TF.

I've never done the Shadow Shard all the way through. In eight years I have, in fact, never even been there. Not counting various instanced CoV missions, of course.

I'd say it is, by far, the most obvious (and most necessary) zone revamp in the game.

Back when the Shard was new there were several reasons to run the content.

  • At the time, they were the only high end Task Forces {EDIT: except for the third respec trial} (no longer true)
  • Exemplaring for lower level TFs required someone in range for each high level character, and if either Exemplar or Aspirant lost connection, the Exemplar was booted from the TF (neither is true now)
  • The single player missions were the only repeatable content at the time (no longer true)
  • Among the single player content was a mission to unlock Mole Point Charlie connecting FBZ and the Cascades (no longer necessary with the quick gates to all Shard zones)
  • Among the repeatable content is a mission that was called the Kora Fruit farm. The mission was to enter a cave and click a number of collectable objectives, each one giving a Tier 3 Inspiration (the mission rewards were reduced to Tier two inspirations, other methods of Tier 3 and eventually Tier 4 inspirations were eventually introduced)

Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?

A: You crash into another one.

I did them on my original Blaster. Still have the badges.

I liked them and still like 'em from a "gee whiz" standpoint, but I'll agree that the TFs were too long (Quatermain... god) and the enemies a significant step up from the average CoH baddies with no reward for that step. It was and is a tough place.

I wonder if the Rula mobs still have a slight edge in drop rate? They'll never be farmed, Observers make a mockery of SS/FA defense, but it's fascinating stuff to me.

Ive seen teams knock off Dr.Q in an hour and a half or less.

Keys to success:

1)No full team, drop to four or five people to reduce spawns;
2)One person parks at Dr. Q to click missions;
3)Assemble the Team on every team member;
4)Pack enough AoEs to obliterate most missions and ghost the rest.

Most of the time though it's a massive slog and I certainly won't run it again.
Have done all the Shard TFs they are fairly meh...Faathim's is probably the most interesting.

I also support most of what's said. I think these zones could use a revamp. Most likely the most unused zones by far.

It doesnt take anywhere as long to complete the Shard tfs as it once did. I did a speed run of Sara Moore about a month ago and it took I think an hour(iicr). Way faster than the first time I ran it years ago.

I know what we should do with the Shadow Shard- make Firebase Zulu the new starting zone for Rularuu EATs!

The Shadow Shard would be way more cool if it had any of the following:

1. Villainside Shadow Shard Zones, with an awesome Arachnos base.

2. PvP and/or co-op zones where the hero and villain SS zones intersect (and where vigilantes and rogues could traverse from red to blue sides and back.

3. All of the other Death Stars holding aspects of Rularuu.

4. Nemesis' base.

5. Incarnate content related to keeping Rularuu from escaping the shadow shard.

Well, as long as we get a badge for that!

EDIT: Oh wait no, I got it. WHEN we Incarnates mess up and let Rularuu loose, we all start preparing for his invasion of Primal Earth. But when he doesn't show up, we're all like, "What?"

Nooo, turns out he's gone to Praetorian Earth first. Full on clash of the titans between Rularuu and Praetorian Hamidon. It would set the stage for us to be rid of both of them once and for all. Especially if Praetorian Earth is finally rid of their Hamidon in the process, and that allows all of the Praetorian refugees to return back home to finally rebuild in true peace once and for all.

In answer to the OP... Yes. Yes, I have. On more than one character, even.

See, it's sort of a small point of pride to do the Shard TFs and contacts with my crew, since many of them belong to a particular species of (Non-canon, obviously-) Rularuu themselves. They're supposed to be what's left of Faathim's followers, so at the very least I like to do his TF with them.

'Trouble is, those TFs aren't run very often and interest in them is very limited... and when I'm out overseer-hunting or running the regular and repeatable missions, I usually have the entire zone to myself. Most of the non-forum-going players in the game seem to have no clue the Shard even exists.
