Toonami returns May 26!
FMA and FMA: Brotherhood in the lineup seems kinda... redundant. I know that the two series diverge after a while, but that's still a lot of FMA.

While I'm glad to see Toonami back on principle, I have to admit that I'm not particularly interested in watching any of that. I just finished FMA on Netflix (after my friends claimed it was depressing and all about child endangerment, neither of which I found to be the case) and am currently well on my way through FMA:B on Netflix. I don't like Bleach, GITS, or Durarara. And I've seen FLCL and Cowboy Bebop soooo many times already.
However, if I'm not watching anything else I won't mind too terribly having that on in the background. Which is more than I can say for a lot of the late night programming they've had lately - particularly the horrible live action stuff. |
Going to miss the fun and nice people here at CoH. Feel free to add me on PS3/XBox360

Ok, when I have the box set Cowboy Bebop, and I don't exactly dig any of the other shows...Well, that's a bit of a downer. They could at least bring back Moribito, that only got one go through on CN and none of the classics from old Toonami days like Gundam Wing, probably due to licensing rights I imagine.
Hopefully they add...something to this.
Man, outside of Durarra! that's a stale lineup. They do realize that Japan didn't stop making series 7 years ago, right? Sure it's got Bleach, which is ongoing (and available in 20 different easy-access online portals), but their core target audience is likely going "meh." They just don't get it. There's such a rich pool to draw from and they just bring in the same old rehash? They do realize FLCL is only 6 episodes right? You can't just keep running that stuff over endlessly and expect anyone to show up for it. They aren't even trying.
Please remember that [as] has not officially announced the lineup. That's just the TV Guide listing. It is entirely possible (and I dare say probable) that the actual lineup will be different.
If you have criticisms or want to give them some useful suggestions. Here is the CN feedback page (and my not-necessarily-helpful response rant).

"I just saw the lineup for the Toonami re"launch" which is just slapping the formerly beloved label on the same stale Saturday lineup.
You guys aren't even trying. You do realize that Japan hasn't stopped making series right? You realize that Cowboy Bebop is 14 years old right? You realize FLCL is only 6 episodes right? You realize you have two different Full Metal Alchemist series scheduled in the same block, right? Are you guys running your programming from your dead cousin's old VHS "japanimation" hand-me-downs box? Good lord. There is a freaking universe of potential quality programming available and you give us THIS? My god. There's this thing called "the internet". Maybe you can check out a couple of animation-related websites, and get a clue or three (for free!) from your TARGET AUDIENCE instead of wondering why your marketing people (or person or intern) can't re-brand your olive loaf on white bread into something edible. "
Yeah I'm sure that will make a BIG difference (not). But I had to vent.
About the only thing I'll add to the discussion until an actual line-up is given is this:
To air any anime series requires said network to license it. Sometimes the fees that the show's holders in Japan charge can be rather expensive. If the network doesn't believe they can get the add revenue to cover the fees, they won't pursue it. There could also be issues with the domestic distributor as well.
Thank you for the time...
A reasonable point. I may have a totally unrealistic idea of broadcast licensing costs for alternative options.
I would have to think that there's plenty of older but well-known series they could get for fairly cheap. Lupin III (even though they did already show that at one point) or Fist of the North Star or Slayers, for instance. They could also take a cue from the Sci-Fi channel circa mid-90s and air a movie every once in awhile. Plenty of those they could show, and would probably be cheaper than an entire series.
But I'm really just guessing here. Maybe a movie is vastly more expensive than a series. Maybe older series like the ones I mentioned are too expensive, or require more editing to be able to show on US TV.(I could see that being an issue with FOTNS, though I do remember seeing it aired on the International Channel on my cable a few years ago. They might have different rules. I dunno.)

For starters, this was an April Fool prank that got popular. They might not have had the time to actually go out and get a ton of new series'.
Second, this may very well be a sort of trial run. If it gets enough viewers, it'll warrant them investing money into it and doing new and more things.
And third, chill the **** out. It's Toonami. That, by default, is good. Crazy fan rants like these usually lead to why we can't have nice things.
Pretty much, a lot of good people had a Petition on the web, to bring back Toonami after the April fool Joke Aired. I sign it as well, it bought me Joy as a Kid and I am happy too see the Petition work.

Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
While that may be true, it does look like what they're doing is rebranding their normal Saturday lineup and swapping in a few rather old series along with the addition of Durarara, which may have already been in the pipeline for the Saturday block. Add some Tom bumpers and POOF, Toonami is back! Using nostalgia to bring back some fans of an old show while saving money by reusing old series is brilliant from a marketing and profitability standpoint.

I still don't see a problem, and this pretty much goes hand in hand with that I said. So 'kay.

Which is just fine since now i can now watch many anime series online within about a week of them first airing in Japan anyway.

Semi good that Toonami is coming back...yay I want to watch it but boo it's on Saturday night. If I don't have plans, I can stay home and watch but if I do? Yeah, I don't have dvr...but hey! It's not like it's anything new...
Anyway, I sorta doubt we'll get lots of new stuff and probably won't pull out much of the old stuff due to licensing...but that's alright. As nostalgic as it was, Toonami was just like current Adult Swim's anime reruns...it played what they had over and over too. They mixed it up, sure, but in their 10ish year run, it's not like their list of what they showed was all that extensive.
That said, I sorta hope Adult Swim doesn't copy the old Toonami formula. Instead, why not do what they did during April Fools and sort of 'advertise' anime. Pull 2-3 episodes from a lot of source anime and show those as a kind of introduction to the show then have Tom talk about the animators, publishers, the DVDs and manga and purchasing them.
Stamp, ship and do a different anime (maybe doing 2 anime so 6 episodes per showing). When you have enough episodes to form a 'season', repeat in a rotation then pick new anime for the next season.
But this hinges on the hopes that it's *much* cheaper to license a set of 2 or 3 episodes from several series vs 1 whole series. If not, then that idea is :sadfaced:
I'm a little surprised no ones brought up the rumor about Tiger and Bunny being on Toonami. Viz started revealing the dub cast (more) for it the same day as this Toonami thing. Coincidence?

That actually looks pretty entertaining. Is it a comedy too? And I have to watch it on account of there being a Tiger in the name...although I'll always grumble to myself there isn't an actual tiger in it...
I thought so too. Mainly because I'd love to listen to Steve Blum talk about shows, the creators, voice actors and stuff. Seriously, Toonami should be that guy with occasional 22+min breaks of anime sprinkled in.
That and there needs to be video game reviews.
Tiger and Bunny has comedic elements like any cop buddy series except they are super powered.
