You made my point as well Tony. Trying to blame obesity on one thing is a flawed argument. There are several factors at work.
Genetics has a part to play in it as well. Some people just have lucky metabolisms that make it really hard to be obese. Some people have unlucky metabolisms that make them predisposed to obesity.
Not saying you have no control over it. If you tried to be obese, I'm sure you could manage to do it. Likewise, just because one is predisposed to obesity doesn't mean that they have to be obese. With a good diet and exercise, anyone has the capacity to be a healthy weight. I do think, however, that our particular culture that rewards people for sedentary lifestyles, that is driven by non-stop passive entertainment (television and the Internet), and in which eating healthy is considerably more difficult and usually more expensive than shoveling a steady stream of junk food down, it's hard not to be obese no matter what your metabolism is. Sure, we can fight it, but do we as a society really want to? |
Trying to blame it on specific products or a high sugar diet is just as flawed.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
Unless you blame it on the law of conservation of mass.

TJ - I respect you as a person, but I HATE your metabolism with a overweight man's passion, from what I recall at the Pummit

And now my head hurts.
Thanks a lot Arcanaville.

EDIT: I did gain quite a bit of weight over a short span of time once. Well, mostly just a bad case of Dunlap's disease (belly dun lapped over the belt) rather than real weight gain.
I was eating at least a quart of Blue Bell Ice Cream a day, specifically the Banana Split flavor. There were days I ate a gallon of it. This was over a span of about 2 months.
I was crawling through the attic at our house one afternoon running wiring for the DirecTV system when I got hung on some rafters. I couldn't move forward, backward or sideways except in extremely slow increments. It took me almost 30 minutes to get myself "unstuck" so that I could move freely along the rafters again. All of the regulars (and some of the irregulars) of our local CB Radio network were laughing their heads off when they heard about it. Of course, they heard about it while I was still in the attic. Someone called on the radio for me and Dad told them why I couldn't answer them.
I lost all of it in a bit over two weeks simply by stopping eating Blue Bell Ice Cream. When I eat it now, I do it in extreme moderation.

Marketing departments are what brought us the "sugar is sugar" commercials paid for by the Corn industry. Yes, it is, but sugar is also what is making this nation incredibly fat, and that includes your high fructose corn syrup. I am actually happy that the marketing team here finally learned that people want to make informed decisions when it comes to their money. I wish more companies would actually admit the truth of their product, and let customers make informed decisions.

Yeah let's ban marketing and save the people from themselves!

If you value yourself in the least, you should consider another career to make up for your vile, manipulate actions.

This is why people hate marketing and commercials. Obviously, they care more about making money than preventing harm. An informed customer is the enemy of marketing, unless the company actually has a superior product. But then again, they wouldn't need superior marketing nearly so badly if they did.

The best product (or service) in the world is useless if nobody knows it exists; which is exactly what this game suffers from most I'd argue.

I don't see what the problem is with letting people know what an item does and doesn't do if it's not obvious?

I don't see how sleeping with you and drinking all of your brandy would help this.

Or perhaps they are just not marketed well.
