Flying Disc = Big Red Ball?
@Glass Goblin - Writer, brainstormer, storyteller, hero

We can be heroes, just for one day
I have to admit, for a completey fluff non-combat power, the Flying Disc is a ton of fun!

I bought this, and it's fun.
I've yet to buy the German Sheppard, and don't plan to.....
...unless I throw my Flying Disc, and he catches it and brings it back.
You do that, and I will buy the dog on both my accounts.
As for "coding"' it - mechanically it's not really any different than any other click buff. It also matches the Gift Giving event.
Orc&Pie No.53230 There is an orc, and somehow, he got a pie. And you are hungry.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
I forget who the originator was, but someone posted on the forums a looooooooooooooong time ago with a thread called "Big red ball?" and basically asking for a BIG FREAKING RED BALL that we could throw to each other. Everyone at the time, all the forum big wigs from Friggin' Taser to Arcanaville to Texas Justice (?), got in on the fun. We were told the engine couldn't handle it and it ended there...
Now, the disc is NOT the Big Red Ball but it's darned close. It's something you can throw, your friends can get it as well and it's clean, noncombat fun! |
I thought, at the time, that it was a waste of developer resources. I didn't voice my opinion for quite a few reasons.
My opinion of it hasn't changed much.
The only reason I'm stating the opinion now is that I was mentioned (with a ? after my name) and happened across this post. Just clearing up matters.
And at the time it was initially brought up I was still teaming on a fairly regular basis.
Now that I'm strictly solo, I think it would be even more a waste of developer resources than I did then.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
What I clearly remember reading was "buy it in the market for 250PP". If there was more and I missed it because I was in a mission having a disagreement with Hellions, I apologize.

This was what was said globally - there may have been more said in Atlas, but I was not there.

Come and join in on the fun! 03-06-2012 17:35:30 [Admin] NCsoft_Zwillinger: No need to own the power to join in on the fun, once you catch a disc, just equip the temporary power and toss the disc to your neighbor! Or you can buy the permanent power and start the party for yourself. It's on the Paragon Market for 250 PP! |

I tossed it to somebody as they hopped on a tram...I plotted to spread the Frisbee virus as far as I could, but I'm curious as to whether it got anywhere. It was on Exalted, but I don't know where the guy ended up.

If Masterminds didn't suck, they'd be the most powerful AT in the game.
I was on when Zwil said this on Justice, so I dug it up from my chat logs.

As I said, I was fighting at the time, and only caught the last half of the post. That was the origin of my ire and disappointment. It was based on incorrect information and I apologized accordingly.
What I clearly remember reading was "buy it in the market for 250PP". If there was more and I missed it because I was in a mission having a disagreement with Hellions, I apologize.
(But, while I hope some ppl enjoy it, unless it was the side effect of some new powerset development, I for one have no understanding why time/effort was spent to develop it.) |
I never went to Atlas, so I don't know if he mentioned the price in his Broadcast chat, but he definitely didn't mention any more that "available now on the Paragon Market" in Admin. And he DID say that you DON'T need to buy the power.
@Roderick
I think this is the original Big Red Ball thread?
Thought for the day:
"Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment."

The flying disc power is the first item I bought in i22. I like it a lot.
I think it would be a terrible shame if development of these small social activity and roleplay powers wasn't done.
I'm pretty sure I specifically stated you *don't* need the power to join in and then gave instructions as to how to use the temp power . I was throwing Flying Discs to anyone who came near.

Yeah you took my eye out you <mutters something unintelligible>!!!!
Thelonious Monk
I'll take your word for it.
But in 4+ years, this is the first time I remember hearing of this begged request. Really, I hope ppl enjoy it. I don't get it. I probably never will (the similar effect with the new Christmas item (whose name I already forget) could not even keep me entertained enough to earn both badges). And the price point seems far too high. (ridiculously) My seemingly mis-reading Zwill (or failing to read everything) just brought out my curmudgeon. (Again. He seems to be out a lot lately - the curmudgeon, not Zwill... not that Zwill hasn't been out, or couldn't be... or won't be, 'cause he could. Probably will. Just perhaps not with my curmudgeon) |
And it does open up a lot of possibilities, too:
- like the "give a christmas present" gift before it, this advances the tech for letting 1 player grant another player a tray-based temp power (not just an automatic buff).
- They could, theoretically, made a "animal control" secondary set for masterminds that would let him bestow guardians on his teammates (give a dog whistle to a teammate, they can call out a dog pet at any time). Same goes for "robot guardian," undead guardian, etc...
- They could come up with a "1 man armory" power that, when used, grants weapon-based temp powers to all teammates. Imagine your gun-totin merc hero passing out his killing toys to all his teammates.
- You could have incarnate powers that, rather than buffing yourself, lets you bestow a power on others. (If we're becoming more godlike, its rather common for gods to bestow gifts on the mortals loyal to them).
- You could see a trial that has a "keep away" element to it- whoever has item X has lotsa aggro from nastybadass x. If he kills you, he gets it and gains a buff, so pass it to a teammate before that happens.
Any such "bestowing a power" tech has the potential for exploits and holes in the tech that do bad things, so trying out the concept in more limited and less exploitable form (gifts, flying discs, etc.) to see how it pans out, how it is received, and what else needs done to shore it up.
I'm pretty sure I specifically stated you *don't* need the power to join in and then gave instructions as to how to use the temp power . I was throwing Flying Discs to anyone who came near.

Nevermind found it.
Obligatory real life Big (has some) Red Ball.
Edit:
As I recall, the Big Red Ball concept as requested was to be a mini-zone event. A building sized object that could be knocked around.
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.
