Deleting a 50: What did you feel?
I don't think of it as deletion, I see it as digital reincarnation.
Actually, I'm pretty brutal with characters. Due to one reason or another, quite a few of them never reach 20. But parts of them live on. A costume design here, a name there, a concept over there, and, of course, any and all objects of value they might have aquired.
Once they get past that point, chances are they will stay put. They might sit idle for long periods of time but they have job security.
The most inviolate of all are my lv 50's. These are the ones that have proven to have the strongest character concepts, or are continually fun to play. They tend to become the focal point of the server they're on and the repository of 'stuff that nobody else needs right now'.
So, deleting a 50? Not sure I see that happening here any time soon.

I haven't done it yet. I'm constantly retooling and tweaking my 50s, so I'm still not bored with them. Then there's the fact that they all still need work on their Incarnate paths.
In the rare instance that I feel I won't play the character again, I transfer it to another server.
My Stories
Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.
I felt nothing and this was before they even implemented server transfers temporarily.
Dark/Dark Corr
Thugs/Dark MM
SS/SA Brute
There was something else, but I don't remember.
I had to do that with a character that was meant to be a sidekick only. During her storyline, she had been forced into leadership, and into running the group during a time when there was no clear leader..
She wound up going through so many changes that I decided the kindest thing to do was to kill her off in RP...well, not exactly. She became a Kami, which is sort of a goddess/spirit, maybe due to her name of Kami Megami.
In the end, I couldn't delete her. Thought of sending her to Exalted, sent her to Union instead. At least she stands a chance of starting over (and I can keep her costume files in case she is ever needed on Virtue again.)

I wont say that I'd never delete a level 50, but I haven't done so thus far. 32ish is the highest level character I can think of that I've gotten rid of (rerolled a Storm/Electric Defender as an Earth/Storm Controller, then finally again as a Fire/Storm Controller, which is now a level 50).
I've got several level 50s shelved on inactive servers, and will probably continue that practice with future 50s that I get bored with.
since i don't pl, farm, or do other things that strike me as not playing the game, , my 50's actually take a significant amount of time to get, so deleting one would invalidate a significant time investment that I just don't have to waste. I lack the abundant free time others seem to enjoy, so i adapt, readjust concepts and deal with game changes and move on.
that said, I did reroll a level 43 stone tank, and it was borderline painful because i knew that all that invested time was just wasted.
Delete a 50? What is this I don't even.

I think I felt a pang the first time I did it but I've done it too many times to worry now. I have "Signature characters" and level 50s
If they ain't one of my own signature characters, in other words if they don't speak to me on some level and grab my imagination, they might find themselves cannibalised and turned into inf
Thelonious Monk
I think they highest level I've ever deleted was a level 36 or 37 warshade. I have retired 50s, stripping them of their IOs and retiring them to a server I don't play.
I've never deleted a 50, and seldom any other characters, but it's more due to laziness than sentimentality. I've never run low on character slots so it's never been an issue.
- If I like a character concept but want different power sets, then I'll delete the character and it will be reborn, better than before. That's a good thing in my book.
- If I dislike a character concept, then deleting that character is no loss.
Worst thing about deleting a 50 is cashing out all their IO's (with a respec), then deleting them before realizing you forgot to email your main the 500 million INF you had on them.
I've deleted several.
Sonic/Psi Defender
Kin/Elec Defender
Elec/Kin Corruptor
Elec/Rad Controller
Fire/Thermal Controller
Earth/Thermal Controller
SS/SR Brute
and Im going to deleted my KM/EA Brute when StaffMelee comes out...
I feel nothing.. I usually make something I enjoy better.. or I strip an old toon of the IO's and put them on something else.
The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.
If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-
I've deleted a half dozen of them over the years, including the very first character I ever made and the very first character I ever got to 50 (not the same character). I didn't feel much of anything. If I liked the characters, I wouldn't have deleted them.
I just banish mine to Freedom. Occasionally they come back. Even more oocasionally I remember why I banished them in the first place.
Enjoy your day please.
In the aftermath, I felt guilty, if not to the work than to the character concepts. "Maybe I should have been more flexible or something." Or, "I got you to 50, it just didn't work out."

Oh, and I have two VIP accounts, so even though I play exclusively on only one server (Justice), I have lots of room for new characters.
So in combination, I'm fairly resistant to the need to delete 50s.

The first 50 I've ever deleted was an MA/Regen scrap. This was right before they buffed MA into what I could consider as viable, and started looking at Regen again.
Oh my luck sometimes...

I tried. Closest I came to deleting a 50 was a 45 Dark/Energy Defender. The reasoning behind that should be clear, but I'll spell it out anyway - Tar Patch + Energy Torrent and the Targeted AoE one as your main AoE damage. She's now a Sonic/Dark Corruptor, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it.
There was a 50 I was going to delete. Dual Pistols/Traps Corr. Fun fact - Traps isn't as fun without Detonator. Now she's a Soldier of Arachnos (working on the Huntsman build found in this thread - http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=124651). That, to me, is WAY more fun
I'd never use a nuke in a superhero universe. You nuke a city, you kill 1.5 million people minus one. The last guy not only gets superpowers from the explosion, but ones that let him survive a nuke...and wow, is he torqued off

PPD Mastermind
Deleted:
lvl 50 Fire/Kin Corr
lvl 50 Rad/Rad Corr
lvl 50 AR/Sonic Corr
lvl 50 MA/SR Scrapper (rerolled as a Claws/SR)
lvl 50 DB/WP Brute (rerolled as a Scrapper)
I kind of regret deleting the /Kin, since Kinetics bring so much to team play as does /Rad. Its just I really disliked Radiation Blast damage-wise. I never got the AR/Sonic Corr any IO's, I think at the time wasn't into maxing out builds or I was more focused on other builds so I deleted it because I stopped playing it. I deleted my MA Scrapper before the buff came, ...go figure. Then again, I've got enough Scrappers... and lately I've been a little burned out playing my Scrappers/Brutes.
I've been thinking about deleting my Necro/Dark MM. I don't play it anymore and I only keep it for all badges it's collected, but I don't badge seriously anymore.
All I've been playing on a regular basis are my Claws/SR, Dark/Shield Scrappers, and my Night Widow. Occasionally, I play my Ice/Cold Corr or Mind/Psi Dom for STF's/LRSF's, Hami Raids, CoP's, or other really hard TF's when teams are looking for support types. But since the iTrials came into the fold, I've haven't seen a demand for support AT's when people recruit.
I think I need to get back to playing on teams more, other than iTrials, it's just I think the game is in a little downtime on the live servers due to the anticipation and the testing of i22.
(Next build: X/Rad)
I feel like it's extremely unlikely.
All of my toons get a backstory/concept before I even get to the costume creator,
so I feel that all of them belong in the Isles/City.
I rarely delete *any* toon (the few I have were under L10), and given the time
it takes me to get a toon to 50, they're a permament part of the roster at that
stage.
While it *is* true that I've got a couple of L50's that won't ever see combat action
again, I still use one of them as a casual marketeer. The other one, may be
a candidate for the chopping block some day, but he was alternately so amazingly
awesome and tear-your-hair-out frustrating that I keep him mostly out of spite.
Another factor for me is that not all of my toons get to, or are even intended
to reach L50.
Several of them are level-locked at different stages for different reasons, and
I even have one that's still in the original tutorial (where he was intended to stay).
Given that all of them have a reason to exist, it's difficult for me to wipe them out.
Regards,

I have gotten damn close, with one level 50 and one that is just now a few bars away. I mean, to the point where the delete screen was open, the name was typed in, and I was hovering the mouse over "OK." But then I remember the character's concept, and how much I enjoyed coming up with it. I remember all the good times that I had while playing that character, and the amount of time I spent getting to know the ins and outs of his powers. I remember that new content is constantly being added to this game, and there could very well be a piece of content perfectly suited for him coming in the not too distant future. And I move the mouse pointer to "Cancel."
Until I run out of character slots and run out of free character transfers and (for whatever reason) cannot wait until the next monthly one drops, I do not think I will ever be deleting a 50. All but one of my 50s took at least 3 months to get there, and the one exception I made was due to character reasons more than anything else. I enjoy putting a good deal of time in getting a character to 50, and once I have done that, I just do not see the point in removing the symbol of that time and effort, even if it is just bits of data.
@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.
I have never deleted a 50, but I have drastically changed them.
I had a concept to create the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. After planning out the powers they should have and the look, I took two high level characters and respeced them into the powers they should have. Then, as I could afford, I got rename tokens using my VIP allotment and changed their names into what I needed it to be. A costume change later and the process was complete. The other two I rolled from scratch. All new figures, max levels for two, without any of the hours spent necessary to level them.
...but in this game I simply let them sit in digital hell until another pass comes through that makes them usable again.
I deleted a level 50 Katana/Regen Scrapper, who'd hit 50 both pre-ED and pre-click IH, and had been built to rely on Focused Accuracy for to-hit so he could slot his attacks 5 Dam/1 Acc and run all the Regen toggles continuously. I'd gotten reasonably good at estimating whether he'd be able to jump into a spawn and beat enough mobs to get ahead of the incoming damage before he ran out of hit points, with the result that he was one of the "comes out of a fight at 100%" characters that caused all the player creebing about how overpowered Regen was by people who didn't see them at 25% or less partway through the fight. The character was going to need a complete rebuild to be viable after ED and the last Regen jerkover, and I didn't want to relearn how to play Regen at level 50, rather than incrementally, so I deleted him. I never got around to recreating him, though; there were too many other concepts to chase.
Similarly, I'm contemplating deleting my level 39 Ice/Fire Tanker, who became even more of a one-trick pony after ED and the changes to Burn. It's not that the character isn't viable, but rather that she's become particularly boring to play.
