It's not too bad a match.

The fire wings and waterfall jetpack are very cool. The helmet pieces are also nice. Everything else is uggglllllyyyyy.

This is one of those sets where you can't just dump everything from it onto a character and call that a costume. You use a few parts individually when you design a costume.

People seem to want this:

When what they're getting is this:

Which seems less impressive until you see something like this:

Can't do that with the pre-packaged model. Thumbs up from me.

FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.

Well put! But to torture the lego analogy further, some people don't know how or don't want to spend that much time playing with legos if they don't have the assembly book.

It's not terribly noticeable if you use the big gloves/boots like I've got on my luminous guy up there.

61866 - A Series of Unfortunate Kidnappings - More than a coincidence?
2260 - The Burning of Hearts - A green-eyed monster holds the match.
379248 - The Spider Without Fangs - NEW - Some lessons learned (more or less.)

Some people prefer the kits to build a specific model, some people prefer the big bin of miscellaneous parts so they can make whatever they want. Some people like a combination of both.

Speaking of legos... but completely off topic... how awesome is this!

its completely made of legos and splits into the 5 lions and everything! Not only that its about 3 feet tall took 71 hours to build AND each lion has a compartment in its head where one of the pilots can sit

Well, there's your next tier 9 VIP set, devs: Robotic anime Lego-lions.

Form blazing sword!

side note:
If the next tier 9 vip "set" isn't a set at all but a collection of seemingly nonsensical costume options, that'd be pretty awesome too.

heck... You could make it a collection of all the little things players have whined about over the years and call it "player request pack 1" and it'd be a sure fire sale for dang near every one of the forum whiners.

you could have it all

And it's kind of hard to cut pieces out of that and reuse it like you can with the bucket of interchangable parts.

The Phoenix wings do not flap, and for that alone they have my undying love. I do wish you could make BLACK ones that didnt simply turn into almost-invisible steam.

Pretty much all I truly want out of this set are the wings and the helmet; but just those two pieces are pretty awesome.

I just figured out that my big issue with the fire set is, it is the same as the problem I have with Organic armor:

The leg detail/secondary pattern is so big and gaudy compared to the chest portions.

Whereas, Ice gets a pattern that's as simple as the rest of the suit, barring the crystals and waterfall etc.

Somewhat of a pointless post, but there goes:

I finally got around to playing around with the Fire and Ice set for the characters I listed earlier, and the results are encouraging. Very much so. The fire swords are awesome, and they don't bother me nearly as much as I thought they would. It's kind of jarring that the actual attacks retain their original sounds so that my fire dual blades sound like I'm banging two lead pipes together, but I can deal with it. The look is too amazing to pass up.

Moreover, I LOVE how the fire swords colour. Tunnel Rat talked about what it would take to make opaque FX, and I think this set is a pure demonstration of why that works. The swords are AMAZING exactly because they look like something between flowing plasma and thick ink flowing through water. And they're amazing for it! This is the sort of visual effect I want to see more of. No mere vague, transparent cloud of strikes but thick, almost viscous fire spewing jets of plasma at regular intervals. This colours much more solidly and much better, and it looks out of this world. I would really, REALLY want to see more effects like this. Hell, I'd pay the price of a new set if Fiery Aura could look like this.

I missed the Robot Arm 3 and Mace options, thanks for pointing those out, Zombie.

As for the sets themselves, I love them. Absolutely adore the costume peices in here, as far as I'm concerned, this is some of the best work I've seen out for CoH costuming in many an age, if not ever.

I noticed earlier that it was mentioned by someone who thought it sucked having outfit peices that screamed Stone Armor. All I can say is, I hear where you're coming from, I highly dislike the look of Stone Armor myself and how it covers my outfit, but using the Fire and Ice peices, I made an outfit that doesn't MIND being coverd by stone armor because it already LOOKS like stone armor. All in how you look at something. And yes, this is my first Stoner, I look forward to seeing how it works now that I've solved the cover-up issue that kept me from rolling it.

Anyhoo... Again, I give my highest regards for this set, look forward to seeing others ingame using it, and a big "Thank you" to those at Paragon responsible for it!

Now oddly at ease with my wings and tail being aflame,
~Raven

Even against certain death, it matters not how or if we fight, only that we do.

Most amusing complement I've ever been paid on an outfit, from @Ukase regarding my Blue Eyed She-Devil Anson Maddocs "Fallen Angel" homage:
"She gives my ex-wife a run for the money."

Think about it, though - what does stone have to do with fire or ice? What does crystal have to do with it, either? And, yes, that is crystal. The "forest of geometric shapes" design of the shoulders is nothing if not cartoon crystal, because that's not the kind of shapes ice forms. And I get that "magma" was the link between rock and fire, but that's only tentative. What this set could have been was genuine ice body parts and "aura body parts" made to resemble fire.

What I think happened is they were making a new Earth-themed set separate from the fire swords and the snotterall backpack, decided to pack them together and rebranded their rock and crystal pieces to fire and ice pieces. But seriously - aside from the fire swords, fire wings, fire tail and waterfall backpack, the rest of the set IS Stone Armour.

That's really not a good thing or a bad thing, it's just a case of weird set naming practices.

I think some of the set looks good, but most of it isn't for me at all. I especially dislike the non-elemental versions of the weapons that just look like crude stone carvings of swords and maces. Heck, the sword looks like a blunt weapon. The body parts look good as fire/magma, but using them as ice looks more like rock with glowing cracks in it.

The transparent arm in Robot Arm 3 can pass for ice. I wish they would have done a whole torso, head, and legs like that.

Thank you for the location. But now I must say it seems pretty stupid that we can only have one fire/ice/crystal arm.

As to the appearance of the set. Most of it leaves me feeling Meh, but there are about a half dozen individual pieces that are outstanding so I don't regret unlocking the set.

Yeah, I'd prefer that, except maybe not as crystalline. Really, I'd love if they could just make a shiny, smooth, reflective ice texture that conforms to the body's shape with maybe some cracks here and there instead of the blobby stuff they've been using. I still really hate the look of the ice armor set and this new set still doesn't quite get ice right.

Problem is ice has so many forms depending upon how it was frozen and how close to the melting point it currently sits at. And conveying ice is tricky from an artistic standpoint. Is it wet glass? Sub zero with frost crystals on top? Deep dense glacial ice? etc.

I agree the fantasy crystals don't quite work*. In fact most things cold in game other than the snow aura, cryogenic aura and the recent holiday temporary snowstorm power just miss the mark conveying cold or ice. I personally would love to see the "wet glass" thing pulled off. But I'm not sure how without specialized pixel shading and realtime refractions on top of realtime reflections ultramode already allows one could really convey ice in its beauty. And I fear that those three things working in concert are beyond the engine, especially when ultramode isn't even mandatory for all users.

---

* Don't quite work as ice--but I have found uses for them beyond the conveyance of ice.

So most attempts at conveying frost or ice in the game...

*glasses*

...just leave you cold?

I was recently annoyed by the inability to use Fire & Ice 1 boots (the one without kneepads) with pants. I have a character who was using Stone as a skin texture with darkish red Circles pattern to get the sort of pattern of red veins I wanted. I was able to change his torso and hands to the Fire pattern and it looks great (the pulsing glow actually fits the concept well, too). But since he's wearing pants I can't make his bare feet match up as well as I should.
