Gender Equality in Costumes - A lack thereof

It's a shame how many people won't 'get' the name since they don't know how sidhe is pronounced. (i.e. like SHE)

You know, I think I give people playing here too much credit. Because I would have thought that it went without saying, and apparently at least one person felt it just had to be said.

Seixsm is an inherent part of our culture. It's like English, heck many parts of English ARE sexist.
What's interesting to me is that all the people saying that this is a sexist pack designed by perverts didn't know until now that it was, mostly, designed by a woman.

Male or female are equally capable of speaking English.

I'm split on "gender equality." I know how much work it takes to make costume parts. And the only actual options are: A) Everyone gets the same costume parts, which means no more skirts/frill/lace or girly stuff. B) Everyone gets the same costume parts, and then women get girly stuff, meaning men just get less costume parts period. C) Everyone gets the same costume parts including girly stuff, so men get corsets and high heels that are a huge waste of developer time for incredibly narrow appeal. D) Everyone gets close to the same stuff, but sometimes women just get girly stuff instead. |
E: When men get something, women get the same thing, maybe with a bow or some frills on it(roughly speaking)It's about going in two opposite directions with a theme, not a hatred of frills, lace or whatnot.

Also, the barbarian pack encourages men to run around nearly naked and I've already seen someone playing a shirtless cowboy stripper in-game. Not sure what bearing that has on anything but it's worth mentioning. |

To be fair, sidhe is not a common English word. But it's easy to run across if you're a fantasy buff.

I laughed when I saw it too. Clever.

Thank you for putting this up 5,000% way better than I did. I don't know why I couldn't find this thread when I posted mine! I was in such a hurry, I forgot to mention that this started back with the Magic Pack, but I kept letting it slide. I'm not buying another pack until it provides clothes for my female characters (~85% of my roster).
Right. I think that just about take the final straw.
It's pretty much become a common knowledge running not-joke now that, for every cool pack that comes out, the Male and Huge models will get the 'Cool' stuff, and the Females will geth the 'Sexy' version. [...] I, for one, am sick of this, guys. There are plenty of others who are. I know this thread will probably get ignored or, at worst, locked. But what the smegging hell. This is starting to take the biscuit. Not amused. |
Reposted from my other thread as requested:
I was super excited about the Gunslinger costume pack, looking forward to making my gunslingin' female character upgrade to duster, chaps and maybe even a spiffy new hat.
But apparently, Paragon Studios didn't want me to. They wanted me to dress her like a saloon where.*
Are you effing kidding me?
We can't even choose chaps and dusters as options. I object to making the Saloon Tawtsy as the default selection to begin with, but making it the only option is just tastelessly clueless.
This is the first costume pack I'm not buying. I love the female hair, but given what it comes with, I can't let my cash give approval. If I have to explain why this is so bothersome, you're stuck in 1981.
* Where what I mean is a young lady who worked in saloons serving male customers, but not by bringing them drinks.

At one time, so was only landowning men able to vote, and owning other people. Just sayin'....
THAT'S what I wanted! Sure, add options with frills etc., but not as the only options.
And to the person who said it would be a huge waste of developer time for little player appeal to give gender equality on frills: You don't know that, to either point. Only the developers know how much time it takes to make adjustments to a mesh and skin based on bodytype. And I know there is a percentage who would LOVE that. I don't know what percentage so I can't do cost/benefit for Paragon, but not knowing the cost...
Hee, I've had a near-naked fairy since before there were wings...

no, it's really not. We've had the ability to run around near-naked since the launch of the game. Still. Not. The.Point. |

I'm not particularly concerned whether or not it has bikinis or posing pouches in it.
What bothers me is that nearly every single item in the pack is ridiculously gender gated. Oh, and more importantly--it doesn't have holsters or hats, etc. It's just...really bad.

Wow, such a feature-rich thread. ONE more then I go back to work...

Really? So it was harder to go into costume creator and mix things up to make female Hellions, then to go through and program an entirely new batch of Hellion girlfriends?
Well, for the NPCs I understand that the original reason was that CoH beta testers were asked if they wanted a greater variety of enemies, or male and female models for the same enemies; the former was chosen. I agree they should have added more females since then though.

And that's my last 'just sayin'...

There is a problem with B and C.
If you are correct in C and including male corsets is a "huge waste of time", then B is the correct answer.
I mean, if people actually do want fewer costume choices for males, then they should have fewer.
Now, I'm not completely convinced by this - I think in terms of Frankenfurter clones alone, you'd see more males in corsets than you will ever see pilgrim hats, but if we operate under the assumption that males don't want frilly parts (for male characters), then it only makes sense not to make those and to make the things people do want.
I'm fully expecting that any "knights" set would have something like this for women:
or this:
Instead of something along the lines of this:
Or even this:
Something close to this would be a "no-brainer" purchase for me:
This is yet another example of what I would like to see:
And a decent set of chainmail, though I'd accept something along the lines of Cadwell's interpretation:

It will be called the FULL PLATE ARMOR Costume Set, and females will get chainmail pasties and a g-string.

Had the Gunslinger Set included female gunslinger options and they released the strumpet (edit: I love when I can get a chance to use that word. ) set separately, I'm sure both would have sold.
Triumph: White Succubus: 50 Ill/Emp/PF Snow Globe: 50 Ice/FF/Ice Strobe: 50 PB Shi Otomi: 50 Ninja/Ninjistu/GW Stalker My other characters
See, it's exactly this kind of cynicism that this sort of costume segregation breeds. And I do agree with you, because that's precisely what I expect any more. That's what we got the last three times, and I have no reason to suspect it will ever be anything else.

And this is where I am about this issue as well. Though I haven't previously commented in any of these recent costume feedback threads, that doesn't mean it's not an important issue to me. So I echo the concerns of the majority of previous posters. I trust Zwill to look out for our best interests.

(I'm just funning with you. As I was with the image I quoted. I do agree with most everything you've posted in this thread, especially your open letter. And yes, I too think the strumpet should have been split off from the gunslinger set and both filled out and released as two full packs.)

Of course it's probably the only piece I'd use regularly, but still... I can already do armor quite well. How long have people asked for sashes?
Edit: not to mention the long skirt...

Fair enough.
I will bring the topic to development.
Realistically, don't expect it any time soon. Schedules are planned out months in advance and right now we're working on both Issues 22 and 23 and art schedules are quite possibly the most rigorous and time consuming of the lot, especially the character artists. Time to revisit previous costume pieces is not currently included and to do so would compromise new costume sets, villain groups, etc, etc...it has an extreme domino effect. |
Don't expect me to buy the Gunslinger pack any time soon then.

The problem is that these complaints have been around a long time (pre-tinting issues have been around since Issue 7 with the introduction of the VEATs, In Issue 10 with the vanguard costume set, etc.), and instead of things getting better, the exact same issues keep returning to a greater degree.

I see why people are upset. The players are being told that their feedback is getting listened to, and then the next set has even more of the same problems.
The developers seem to feel the need to put out quantity over quality. It might be time to take a step back and re-evaluate some priorities.

Armour, yes. Medieval armour, not so much. There's all of one set and it's older than I am. We've had a few more that look like generic metal armour (Valkyrie comes to mind), but none of it really looks medieval.

^This entirely. We've had beast, steampunk, barbarian, circle of thorns, and gunslinger all in less than a year. I love having new sets but...Yeah. Not when they're unfinished and/or flawed.

Also make sure they release TW before they "take their time" on anything.

I know. I'm trying not to be my normal dramatic self to get the point across to the development team that I'm tired of the promises that "things will be better." only to have the next pack contain even more of the mistakes that we we're told will be fixed in future packs.

Agreed. The Dev's shouldn't be surprised (even though they always seem to be. They can't claim to listen, NOT listen as is obvious from the sets in the past, then throw a hissy one when they get called on it.
