I'm seriously beginning to think someone simply checked in the wrong codebase -- there's just too many wonky things this past week.

We're constantly exploring many designs for possible implementation. In this particular case, we don't have any current plans on implementing this feature, and it showing on the vendor was a bug (if you look at the tooltip, it's obviously WIP).

While I love to see you guys theorize and speculate , I also believe it's important to set appropriate expectations. In this case, do not expect to see this feature in the immediate future.

But yeah, tis' a shame it's only an experiment and not a real feature, could've helped out those pre-T7 premium players with their IO problems

A bit of a shame, but not too unexpected. Really though, it's a great idea if you tweak around when preemies get reward merits. A good hybrid model is one that offers in-game ways of earning things they can pay cash for, because it comes down to which becomes more important to the player, cash or convenience. Several will opt for convenience, but having the option in game does not feel like you're forcing anyone.

Yep, guessed right.

Didn't seem like something they would do. They want people to buy things with Paragon Points, seemed counterproductive if they allow in game currency to do the exact same thing.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

If you remember the whole risk vs. reward cha'bang regarding players gravitating towards the quickest and easiest option for rewards, putting in-game rewards for stuff you can buy in the market will give the players with patience and time the chance to get stuff for free whilst the lazier playerbase will just shell out cash because they "WANT IT NAOW!"

It would do the community spirit some good for it to be a truly hybrid model and let gamer instinct handle the 'why' would people buy market versions when they can get it free. Because there'll always be people wanting to pay to win* and that will help CoH on the financial side regardless.

* IOs aren't 'pay to win', but do offer an advantage to its users

Wow, hey, did anyone mention to you guys that this sucks? Why the hell did you even put any development into this if it's not supposed to even exist?

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

You can't call them Premmys, that's for sure.

Many returning players have asked why this kind of thing didn't exist, as they're used to it existing in other "F2P/hybrid" games they returned from to look at Freedom. While I realize there are some implementation details to work out, I think it would behoove you guys to look into something along these lines into play. I say that because what these premiums I know are doing is looking at what their options are, seeing they can't use IOs without paying, and then leaving again.

While the "off-the-cuff" response to that may be "well, they weren't going to pay anyway, so who cares?", the reason it matters is that if they aren't playing at all, there's no hope of selling them other stuff. Making a few bucks of of them every couple of months is better than making nothing at all.

My brother would have liked this possibility. Due to RL time constraints, he hasn't wanted to resubscribe to CoH (why pay for something he doesn't have time to use). The same lack of time also works against him since his IO Builds are effectively unusable, and he doesn't have the time or ambition to rebuild them with an alternate build complete with SO's. He's always been more of a casual player anyway, but something like this would give him something to work towards.

I too would be interested as well. I probably will need to cancel my subscription when my current cycle is done January due to financial concerns, but I'll only be at 23 Tokens (about 7 shy of completing Tier 7). And yea, my characters, while not sporting multi-billion ISK builds, are still fitted exclusively with IO's. So instead of playing CoH casually for a while until I can afford to go VIP again, I'll likely just stop playing entirely for potentially even longer.

(edited for clarity)

Totally agree with Uber.

I have had a few friends come back and resubscribe, a few who poke their heads in every now and then to say, "hi", and a few who logged back in and left in a huff seeing how limited they were as premiums.

You can make money off of premiums buying knickknacks off the market only if you can keep them playing. Lacking the IOs that they had previously earned is a deal-breaker for many of them. Having an alternate, non-financial route to regain their IOs would earn some premium goodwill.

You can save your monthly points to buy the 30 day license. With 800 points (Decemeber-January) you will have 5 months of IO license. No need to stop playing

I absolutely agree, but the problem is one of perspective.

NCSoft/Paragon Studios have never seen Freedom as a F2P/Hybrid game even though it's been marketed as such. In their eyes it's still a subscription game but now has an extended trial and an online store.

Those of us who have played other hybrid model games can see the difference in attitude...

A certain recently F2P superhero game is ballyhooing a huge gain in players, so far since Freedom's launch I've heard nothing like that from this game. Maybe Freedom's model needs to be made a bit more generous for non-VIPs? The denial of IOs to returning players for example was a HUGE misstep.
