Forced teaming makes me sad

I see from the Beta forums that this year's Winter Event will probably require a minimum of 12 players to access, only via the LFG tab.

I'm sick of being offered content which requires huge (to me) groups. My preferred playstyle is to duo with my SG-mate.

We'll do the Winter Event once for the badge but will probably view it as a chore rather than take pleasure in it.

No, the Winter Event does not require 12 and use of the LFG tool. The "Lord Winter's Realm" part of the event does. This is the same part of the event as last year that used to be accessed through a giant present after defeating a Winter Lord and still needed a large team (perhaps not 12, but more than your duo, to be sure) to complete.

In this particular instance, I am okay with it. Last year, I found that mission to be most successful when we had more than one team. Not full teams mind you, but if I saw at least 12 players gathered around the present, I felt we had a very good chance at success. And now that we can schedule the events as we see fit rather than waiting for a present to spawn, I think this addition to the LFG tool is worthwhile.

@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.

Also nice is the fact that we will have something to do while we wait in the LFG queue. If you don't want to form or join a pre-formed league, hop in the queue and go skiing or present hunting, fight Winter Hordes, etc.

So you entered the zone via a super big present? I wasn't here last year, that sounds cool. LFG queue? Less so Not keen on the requirement for 12 people either.

This is a song about a super hero named Tony. Its called Tony's theme.

There was more than just the giant present involved. You had to click presents until enough winter horde (100?) had been defeated in zone. Then a Winter Lord would spawn and would need to be defeated. then a giant present would spawn and people had to gather round and click on it to enter Lord Winter's Realm.

While it was kind of cool, it will be a little easier to arrange for those who want it with the LFG tool. I'm kind of indifferent, really, either way works for me.

Welcome to City of Heroes. City of Heroes is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. As such, most of the newer content is designed for multiple teams. And I, for one, say it's about time. If you do not like teaming, perhaps a MMOG is not best suited for you.

You're allowed to claim that argument as valid when having a well thought out character background and sufficient hours logged of in-character conversation is similarly mandatory.

The important thing is that now there are no suprirses because that's not what this holiday season is all about. It's about getting things done in an orderly, efficient, safe, and predictable manner.

When you log into a character, you are role-playing, even if you chose not to speak as that character, nor limit your actions to those that your character would do or not do.

Teaming or not teaming has nothing to do with role-playing. Your argument doesn't have anything to do with what is being discussed.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

Not sure about the defeat requirement. I always found that spawning the WL was random, but more likely the more people you had on your team while opening presents.

You can still also solo levels 1 - 50.

You can still also rescue Baby New Year on your own.

If you're really silly, or purpled out, you can take on Lady Winter by yourself.

It's a silly thought; but seasonal events normally revolve around community gathering (Valentine's Day, Halloween, Chrismachanukkwanzaaramadanukkah, etc.) - meaning they're not just for a Party of One.

I mean, yeah, some people do spend Valentine's Day alone, but... whatever.

I'm not a game developer, but I'm going to assume that if I were, and I was designing a game that involved multiple people playing together, then if I were to make a seasonal event I would design something that would include them and bring them together.

It does if you're trying to use the "MM" part of MMO to justify a "Team or else!" point of view. If you're going to do that, you don't get to selectively insist on that bit while tossing out the "RP".

... And all that about role-playing just by logging in? Not quite. I'm sure the role-players over on Union or Virtue would have a few things to say about your definition.

We just had 4-player Trial with the Haunted House. This gives those of us that like bigger teams something to look forward to this X-Mas.

I wasn't around for the last couple XMas's, but is the X-Mas Mission in Pocket D's still available (Something about rescuing the New Year baby?). That's a regular mission and can be run with just a normal team of X Players.

You seem to imply we're asking for nerfing the encounter, but most people are just complaining about the amount of players required to start. Last year, you could do the event with 36 players if you wished to do so, and you could also do it with 4. Most people did it with multiple teams already. The only change is the option to do it with a single team has been removed.

The way I understood it was that defeats in the zone all counted, and were cumulative so that even if there had been 25 killed an hour ago, and your team comes in and kills 50, and there's another team out there who kills another 25, then the WL will spawn.

I admit that I'm not certain about that - you might be right and maybe it was random.

this is the main reason why it doesnt bother me that this change is happening, present hunting while queued, ect

This I can understand. Perhaps make a push for the encounter to be able to be done with 8-24 people? That way one team could start it on their own?

Again, I am sort of indifferent to the whole thing, but I get people being upset about not being able to start with one full team.

This is so wrong that it's laughable.

"Massive Multiplayer" does not equate teaming. It means that I'm online playing and you're online playing, it does NOT mean that people have to join up to get things done.

Yes, things can be easier in a team, but requiring teaming is the antithesis of any game company that wants to make money. Some of us don't like teaming. Some of us only want to play when our friends are on. Some of work weird schedules and are only on when no one else is.

I work with the public 40+ hours a week, on the weekends. I get off work at 7am EST/EDT. After dealing with those people all night, the last thing I want to do is deal with more people, especially in something I'm paying for that I want to enjoy.

I respect and enjoy reading your opinions, Celestial Lord, but this comment is way off base in thinking MMO= team. MMORPG just means, there's a bunch of people online. I it does not mean "Team or lose!"

Solo comics sell as good, if not better than group comics. Why? Because solo heroes have just as much fun, if not more, than groups.

That's why Spiderman can team up with The Avengers for a few issues, yet still go back to being Spidey. Because teaming does not always mean fun.

I'm not outraged or anything but I do think it's a little bit sad that an unpredictable, impromptu, raid type of activity with a unique interface for starting it has been replaced... by a menu.

Didn't seem like there was a problem here that needed fixing is all. Most of the time, it WAS a big sloppy raid on the Winter realm with people shouting in global channels when the present popped up and people streaming into the zone from all over.

Good times.

Indeed.

The thing that bugs me isn't so much that you *have* to have a team to run it, but the larger number of people required to start it this year. (I was on a couple of single-team runs last year, and while it was a little tougher to complete that way it was definitely still do-able if the group was on the ball.)

On smaller-population servers (like Liberty, where I spend most of my time-) I suspect it'll be tough to run this after the first few days' rush. Eight people are a lot easier to find than twelve.

Thank-you for restating this for the benefit of those who are still unsure of the concept.

Welcome to the World of Nonsense. An MMO is a game in which many players share a persistent, common world and are free to interact with others if and how they choose to do so. If I should so choose to interact with other people via chat, trading and the forums, then you have no power to tell me to go find another game. Furthermore, of all the MMOs out there, City of Heroes is one of the most solo-friendly ones, and this is both an acknowledged and intended feature of the game.

If you feel incapable of playing a game without other people, perhaps a Pen and Paper RPG would be more to your taste. I hear D&D Fourth Edition is very well balanced, but I don't have first-hand knowledge of it.
