A Halloween Thread: what frightens you?

About 2 minutes later, I received this reply:

...much as I'd like to run screaming from the Web and hide in an old, creepy, disused corner of DARPAnet, I think it'd be better to talk it out.

I am a quite genuine coulrophobe, and to a lesser extent afraid of kids' costumed characters in general. No idea why, other than an incident with the Honey Monster when I was small. (Paraphrasing Bill Hicks: to you, it's a cuddly cereal character: to me, it's an eight foot hairy thing with massive bloody teeth that clearly wants to eat me).

How afraid? Well, having been in a fight or two, nearly drowned a couple of times, and caught up in the 7/7 terrorist incident and dealt with that calmly, yes, more scared of clowns than scraps, big waves or terrorists.

So, as we're celebrating the Season of the Witch, what thing / movie / situation terrifies you beyond the capacity for rational thought?

Moths. Those lumiphillic, powdery-winged divebombing monsters from hell. I cheer when the bats swoop past outside and eat them mid-air. I hate them. Also, Crane flies. Spindly legged evil sods.

Spiders I'm fine with though.

Oh, and an obsession with the material of the Health and Safety Executive has developed healthy fears of carbon monoxide, asbestos and other delightful things.

The only thing that scares me is running out of cigarettes.

My imagination.

If I am in the basement at night getting my laundry and I turn the lights out, I can very easily scare the bejeesus put of myself simply by imagining there is someone or something down there with me, even though I logically know there isn't.

Also, despite not believing one whit in the paranormal, I will not do more than glance into a mirror at night for fear of seeing something or someone behind me.

Scientists have run studies on people placed in sensory deprivation rooms; they've seen that a part of the brain activates after a couple of minutes of deprivation, which coincided with the subject feeling a presence in the room. So, it's not just you. (And yes, I get those feelings as well.)

I'm really uncomfortable around heights, but it's more from a fear of falling. Not sure why I am, but I've been that way since I was a kid.

I've learned that there are two things in this world I should never mess with: Electricity and animals that can kill me. With either one of them, it doesn't matter how much experience you have or how careful you may be, it's only a matter of time before you get hurt.

Same. I've stood on the edge of really tall things (Grand Canyon, skyscrapers) unsupported, and quite bored flying these days, but can't stand vertical drop rides (if my feet aren't on anything solid).

So perhaps not a fear of falling so much as hitting the ground. Which is perfectly logical.

Spiders. Creepiest thing ever in my opinion. I once had a dream about spiders while I was sleeping on the floor. I woke up in mid air. Apparently I had pushed myself off of the ground. Mind you I was over 220 Lbs. at this point as well. My wife is the spider killer in the house.

Same here. Though some of the manuevers the pilots had to perform while flying into Iraq made me nervous as hell.

Willpower has more passive regen than Regen does. Who thought that was a good idea?

Can we get a fix for Energy Melee instead of more new sets?

I am exactly the opposite. Roller coasters, free fall rides, free fall rides on top of really tall building (like in Vegas), all no problem.

I CANNOT however stand on anything high. I almost threw up at the top of the empire state building, and I was just standing there.

Also... clowns. They have always given me the heeby-jeebies.

Plants that move or make noise. This is just one of the reasons I find the Devouring Earth not only the most evil of factions but utterly terrifying as well.

I've been asked to inform you all that my partner is terrified of slugs. Which means I have to throw out any that come in after the cat's food. It also means I can't watch Slither, which has Nathan Fillion it and should therefore be awesome.

It depends what you mean by frighten. There is a ton of stuff that I don't like that, make me freak out or worry or whatever, and that I avoid for the most part, but I wouldn't consider them so much fears because I don't let them stop me from doing anything.

heights. infections , and generally the really messed up stuff my imagination can come up with when im alone at night, my own head is clearly my enemy. Also, being late, i hate not being punctual and actually have nightmares about showing up late for work/appointments or dates, and im talking wake up sweating/heart racing nightmares.

funny thingis, used to be really afraid of the dark, now currently work nights, so my waking leisure hours are about 80 percent in the dark. suffice to say when my imagination isnt going after me, the dark and I are ok with each other.

Slither is indeed awesome, just because Nathan Fillion is in it. However, it does have an amusing/creepy dark humor to it as well.

I have a phobia of praying mantids. One of them ate my pet frog when I was a child. The darn thing was at least a foot long. Can't look at one without running the other way and swearing like a Tourette's victim.

The movie Coraline was on TV the other day. It has a mechanical mantis that freaked me the hell out. I almost changed the channel, but managed to grit my teeth and get through it.

I can't really think of anything that frightens me in a major way - it's easier to come up with stuff that just grosses me out

Heights, sometimes badly.

When I was about 13, I was on a Boy Scout hiking trip. We stopped by this really big rock formation, and I climbed to the top. It had rained earlier in the day, and the top was covered in moss. As I turned to come back down, I slipped on the moss and fell down the side of the rock face. Someone very luckily was climbing up from the bottom. Also luckily, I was wearing a jacket with a hood on it. The guy climbing up caught me by the hood, and fell the rest of the way with me, but he slowed me down enough to save my life (and avoid any injury somehow).

Ever since then, I've been afraid of heights where I don't feel in control or secure. Oddly enough, this means that I'm more afraid on roller coasters or drop rides on the way UP. Because once we start going down and I've therefore tested the restraints, I'm fine.

Meanwhile, those giant's ladders you sometimes find at high element courses freak me out to no end. Like, not even off the bottom rung leaves me completely freaked. Since it's so wobbly, I never feel in control, and therefore cling to the bottom rung for dear life: a whole 2 feet off the ground.

As a Pagan, I take exception to the phrase, Season of the Witch. Pejoratives are unnecessarily inflammatory.

Nevertheless, NOTHING in movies, TV, Plays or any other media you can possibly throw at me 'frightens me'. Bores, annoys, disgusts, anxie's...yeah.

RL? I find, as the years go by, the sources of fright tend to change. No permanent answer at this time.

Heights. But not in an airplane. Near a window a few stories up, having to climb something (or *watching* someone climb a tower or show the view on tv from a skyscraper under construction,) glass floors, etc.... no thank you. But I'll happily *fly* higher.

I kind of fear snow, well maybe not fear but avoid... When I was 10, I had a persistent nightmare every night for a year where I die in an avalanche. Since then I have avoided winter trips to the mountains and snowy areas in general. just in case.

I don't fear anything else.

Females. I can never get up the courage to ask one out....

Seriously though, I can't say I'm truly afraid of anything. Things can make me uncomfortable, nervous, or can surprise me, but nothing actually scares me.
