Agreed. I'm into this game for thousands of dollars over the course of six years and I can confidently say without reservation that if the naming system were changed, THAT would be the straw that broke the camel's back and I would instantly leave this game. I'm sure I wouldn't be alone. They would lose money and I doubt gain enough new paying customers to offset their losses.

And regardless. Whether you have "Zeus" or not, if there does happen to be a superhero online with the same name, but spelled "Zues", there are sill 2 of you running around. And if you were the latter, wouldn't you want the right spelling?
This hasn't been broughten up, but if there was a problem with teaming, a simple solution is a small orb next to the characters name in the team window that has your face profile for clarification.

I personally agree with Pagan. My account is only 1yr and 9 months because I have come and gone from the game but if they made it were we could have multiple characters with the same name I don't think I'd play any more.
I mean it might not seem like a huge deal to some, but to me, I like having my unique name. I have never ran into someone who has the same name but spelled differently or spelt incorrectly and I like it. It would take a lot out of the game for me if someone else had my name. My character would no longer be special, no longer unique.

Or worse, on an account that is inactive altogether, but the name is still locked.

That's really the only part of the system that bothers me. Once a name is taken, it's more or less gone for good... even if the player who has it leaves, never to return or play that character again.

But just because the best names of all might be already taken doesn't mean they should permanently make all names useless, irrelevant, and commonplace.
New server transfer token means i've moved another 50 to exalted and snagged the name "Strawberry Quick"

This wouldn't apply to Exalted (VIP only) but for free accounts on the other servers, I do think names should turn-over on a regular inactivity interval.

Their excuse for not scrubbing names more frequently (only done twice before that I know of) is that it's a very manual and labor intensive project. There's really no "bang for their buck" so to speak.
That said, I agree whole heartedly. Inactive accounts after a period of time should not expect to retain their names. To me, two plus years of inactivity on an account is more than fair. Unless, of course, you have a subscription. If you're paying, you should have the right to retain names inactivity or not.

Anyone want the name Sculptor before I delete the character? Figure the name Sculptress would fit a female better, so deleting it. Just asking here since I think it's a pretty decent name for someone with stone powers.
Had my fun with the think tank costume piece and now the shiny newness is gone, so I have released the name Ectoplasm back into the name pool.
Released the names Harlequin Fencer and Harlequin Juggler, because I realized I don't really want to make characters just based on the costume powers.

Green Lanterns are an organization, and admittedly an exception to the "one hero per name" rule - but they're the only notable exception. And even then they wouldn't fit into the CO naming system. In comic books, all the Green Lanterns have the same powers, the same theme, the same background. Were they MMO characters, they would all have been made by players working in agreement with each other as to the powersets and story. However, no one who made, say, an Assault Rifle/Devices tech character or a Spines/Invuln mutant character would be one of them, even if their name was also "Green Lantern" thanks to the broken naming system.
As far as the Hulk and the Flash (and Batman, and many other heroes who "pass on the cape" to a successor), there's still usually only one of them running around. And as with the Green Lanterns, they still have the same story and powers. It's not like there's The Flash (with superspeed) running around next to The Flash (with technology-based light-blinding flashy powers), battling The Flash (a trench-coated flasher), while The Flash (a derpy guy with handguns and energy melee for no reason) watches on. Which is what would happen if anyone could take the same name as an existing character.
