East Coast Quake

Anyone else just feel the quake that hit the east coast? Epicenter was in VA, something around 5.8. Felt it up here in NYC.

I know this is standard fare for you West Coast folks, but very unusual here.

BTW, hope everyone is okay nearer to the epicenter down south.

Yep, that was weird! I was wondering what the hell it was, figuring surely it couldn't be a quake! But, the map says it was real! Anyone in the DC/Richmond area? Must have been nasty over there... I can't imagine many buildings are designed to resist quakes in those parts!

Its epicenter was relatively near me here in Charlottesville. It happened while I was driving and I missed it, but I've been talking to some of my neighbors and family (who largely live in the Centeral VA area) and they all felt it.

I live just south of Toronto, and just felt something that was enough to make me go "I think we just had an earthquake." My puppy wasn't thrilled about the event, though.

Yo, Richmond here.

It shook us up a bit, knocked some stuff off the walls, but at least for us just south of Richmond it didn't do any real damage. It was about 15-20 seconds of solid shaking, then it faded. Then again, my family and I are originally from LA, so all this does is make us homesick.

Believe it or not, but there are fault lines in the area. We get a decent number of small quakes around here, but most people ignore them since they usually just feel like someone's doing some construction nearby or something like that.

Something readily identifiable as an earthquake is quite odd though.

My Grandmother in Raleigh NC said she could feel tremors from it. Wonder how many people freaked and thought they were being nuked.

They're filming a movie across the street ATM and I honestly thought it was some more tractor trailers and heavy equipment moving down the road at first. But it swayed from side to side more than that sort of shaking usually does.

Yep, and nope, the buildings here did NOT like that one bit.

Still waiting to hear from my wife in Silver Spring. (EDIT: Whew, wife called, her building was evac'd and everyone's okay.)

Stay safe, people.

After Katrina most of the new stuff that went up in the SE was designed with hurricanes in mind. I wonder how different the engineering is between hurricane and earth quake resistance.

North Carolina here and we had some moderate tremors for a minute or two. Not bad enough in this area to cause any damage, just freak people and pets out a little.

Plymouth MA here, felt it pretty good for a bit.

My Twitter feed lit up like the Fourth of July the moment it happened...I saw reports from as far south as North Carolina all the way up into Southern Michigan.

My former Coworkers back in Fairfax, VA claim to have had a wild ride...I can only imagine as some of our offices were on the 8th floor!

Central New York State noticed it too...Or at least I did. Kinda weird having things sway a little bit...especially since I don't drink.

First reports of the devastation hitting the Eastern Seaboard are just now coming in...

My heart goes out to those affected.

That is startlingly accurate...

I'm in Winston-Salem, and I actually thought it may have been something wrong with my house's foundation at first, because you just don't hear about earthquakes around here. Wasn't until I checked out my twitter feed that I found out it was indeed an earthquake.

Hey! Do you have any idea how long it took to repair the damage from this quake?

Almost thirty seconds! I had seven whole books fall to the floor!

Do you think I can claim it on my insurance?

Yup I'm in Brooklyn, I thought someone was messing with my desk shaking it. There should be some aftershocks so I'm staying out of the subway for this afternoon.
