East Coast Quake

Late to the party, but was 40miles from the epicenter. Having never experienced a significant earthquake before (and considering where I live), it was terrifying for me. I thought my house was going to vibrate itself apart.

Watching CNN yesterday, first time I've seen Henrico as a 'feature point' on a national map.

I did get pretty tired of the 'east coast pansies' flack. A friend tossed me this link which might help west coasters better understand why a 5.9 on the east coast is indeed a big deal.

Everything in my area seems okay. No one was hurt and all the buildings look to have sustained no damage. The video posted a page or so back was, I think, pretty representative of the state of old buildings in more urban areas.

Also, waves to @Quasadu and @Justice Reaper whom I know, and the other players in the Tri Cities area.

My dog is terrified of thunderstorms but he was fine through the earthquake. He did come down and sit with my son and I during the quake itself, but before and after he was just as calm as can be.

Let's face it, Americans are woefully lacking in basic geography. And science. And math. And history.
Oh I see how it is, if you dont have a population of at least 500k you dont rate on the east coast. Va Beach and Atlanta both have populations greater than Miami (according to census data on wiki less than 300k), now a hick town like Charleston SC I can agree with

Although I don't like it, I'd agree with Father Xmas.

East Coast you have: Boston, New York, DC, Miami; I'd also put Atlanta in there too.

West Coast I'd agree with the 4 that Father Xmas has...maybe include Las Vegas and/or Denver...those are about the only other 2 'west coast' cities that "everyone" knows.

Edit: Granted Denver isn't really a West Coast city so I'd take it off...Las Vegas is 'close enough' to the West Coast for most people I'd assume

Las Vegas, I'll give you. Denver, on the other hand ...

That, and this discussion in general, reminds me of a guy my father once worked with. He was from New York and had never been out of the Northeast, then was sent to work in St. Louis for a summer. During this guy's first week in St. Louis, a co-worker asked him what he was going to do on Saturday. The guy said, "I thought I might drive to Disneyland and back." ... Yeah.

(By the way, no particular offense intended to anyone here. I've lived in several different regions of the United States, and all of them have this kind of problem, in one way or another.)

I dunno, I've ran into alot of people outside Va that know about Va Beach. Generally when your talking about Va you either cite Va Beach or Nawfuch (Norfolk) and say you live north, south or west of there.

Then again, I see his point. My neice and nephews moved from someplace west of the Missisippi and we were driving right smack dab in the middle of Yorktown Va and they had absolutely no idea of the historical value of the place and probably still have no idea what Jamestown is. I bet if I ask, they will probably tell me that America started at Plymouth Rock.

Yeah I know, it does exist, not some fancy tale told by crazed barbarians found half dead floating up the Hudson.

HEY! (offended SC'er) the greater Charleston area has 660,000, more than your vaunted 500k mark. And they survived the 1866 quake, Hurricane Hugo, and Hollywood's attempt to nuke it for TV ratings. All that toughness and civilized tea, too. Chucktown is no hick town.

Now Savannah, that's another story...

Also, unless you're counting the Georgia Aquarium, you can't really count Atlanta an East Coast city. All the ones Father Xmas used are either true coastal cities or directly connected to the coast by a major waterway. Likewise his West Coast list are all at the water. A fifth East Coast city might be Baltimore, depending on whether the Chesapeake Bay counted or not.

Just moments ago, I felt another quake here in Virginia. Just checked the USGS Website and the preliminary reading is a 4.5.

Yup. Felt it here in Charlottesville. There was a 3.4 last night at around this time that I noticed too.

Yeah, looks like its just an aftershock from Tuesday afternoon, but at 4.5 it's actually larger than the quake in 2003.

Well my choice of cities has more to do with what people are exposed to on TV programming. Probably 95% of the shows set on the East Coast, meaning you aren't far from the ocean (sorry Georgia) are set in those four cities. Same with the West Coast.

The Midwest is Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit. The South is Georgia, Dallas, Houston.

Was chillin' in bed with a book and felt everything sway. Fortunately not strong enough to cause any additional damage.

...I forgot what experience means.

Yes, I was in a morality mish with a buddy when it happened. At first, thought it was the central air unit coming on, but then the rumble got stronger and lasted for a longer period.

I said something after it happened but this page gave me confirmation a few minutes later:

This blew me away. Had no idea quakes on the east Coast were possible. Hope everyone was safe and there wasn't too much damage to their belongings or house.

Lived on the east Coast for the majority of my life and never knew....

Yep, this is the second or third time we've had an an east coast quake, but hey if anything we are a resilient bunch and will not succumb to adversity!
