CoH Declaration of Freedom Sale - and its implications
I am still trying to figure out how this game continues to be so enjoyable to me after a bit over 87 months of playing. I thank and congratulate all devs, mods, and fellow players present and past for their role in that and future ones for the next * years.
* I am beginning to wonder if they can just keep updating it so it never ends. |
That said it would be amazing if this game could, like once every 10 years or so, recreate itself and continue for decades to come.

Aw Hell..... I HOPE launch is mid-September.. I still need to buy a ton of Booster Packs.. like $110 worth... And there's no way I can drop that before the 30th!!!!

No goodies. But if you make the account prior to I21, you get at minimum 400 Paragon Points for having an active account prior to launch.
This is a good deal for anyone who wants to play Free/Premium on a new account. It's essentially $5 of points for $2. |
After the launch, you will get Paragon Points on your billing date for the entire duration of renewal. So if you are paying monthly, you would get 400 points on the day you get billed. If you are on the 3 month plan, you would get 1200 points on your billing date. If you are on the annual subscription, you would get a whopping 4800 points on your billing date all in one lump sum.
I haven't heard how they are handling interim points for existing long term subscriptions. For example, if you are on the annual plan, and just renewed in June. Not sure if they are giving you the balance of what you would get between now and June all at once or treating you like a monthly subscriber until your next billing date.

This seems nice, but paying 1 extra euro in commission to my bank for something that's supposed to cost $2 (~1.5) is a bit steep.
Hmm...
I'm actually amazed this is the first time I run into this sort of issue, in our world of microtransactions everywhere. I guess I'm usually buying locally or in bulk.
Paragon Studios would not likely go full month or longer without some outlet to sell their products. That outlet would have to be the Paragon Market of Issue 21. Might be time for your pool to reassess the situation.

It seems far too late for an end of August launch to me because this isn't just an issue release: its essentially a relaunch of the title. My guess is Paragon Studios and NCSoft will want to announce a date at least two or three weeks ahead of launch, and I don't think any announcement is likely this week. Which for me means the current best case launch date is between September 5th and September 12th. The target date I've had in mind for a while now (which, I am forced to emphasize, is not based on any insider information but is just my best judgment) is end of September to early October.

(Please support the best webcomic about a cosmic universal realignment by impaired angelic interference resulting in identity crisis angst. Or I release the pigmy water thieves.)
It is possible that they want some time between shutting down the NCSoft store and bringing up the Freedom store. That may not be a simple matter.

The other issue. though, is financial. How much transitional time is NCSoft prepared to write off their books when CoH isn't bringing in any new income? In the current economy, doubtless not very long.
My guess is Paragon Studios and NCSoft will want to announce a date at least two or three weeks ahead of launch, and I don't think any announcement is likely this week. |
But why does NCSoft need to make an announcement with that much lead time? The news about CoH Freedom has been circulating for a while now and arguably crested at Comic Con. In the Internet age, events can move surprisingly fast. (A certain MMORPG revolving around a particular barbarian's era, having announced its transition to the F2P model earlier this year, recently sprung their actual switch without much advance notice about implementation.)
Which for me means the current best case launch date is between September 5th and September 12th. The target date I've had in mind for a while now (which, I am forced to emphasize, is not based on any insider information but is just my best judgment) is end of September to early October. |
How sleep-deprived is Positron looking in the UStream videos these days? That may be the best indicator for what's going on within the walls of Paragon Studios as the CoH Freedom launch inexorably approaches.
Okay, important question here - can you gift these? I'm considering buying a few just so I can hand them out to any acquaintances who might be interested in playing.
Who do I have to *&^% around here to get more Targeted AoE recipes added?

I have to ask, though - why would I get this specific very cheap version of City of Heroes if all I wanted out of it were a Premium account? Isn't all I need to do a single purchase from the store for something simple and cheap? Does this version come with goodies?

That seems like a decent deal to me.

I find it too coincidental that the end of the current NCSoft CoX store is on a Monday, which is a really odd day of the week to end on, when almost every new issue launches on a Tuesday.
Although I find it hard to believe they will be ready to go in less than 2 weeks as well.

Not only is there the Mac bug with the market, but I hit a massive bug on my Mac in the f2p where allkcating a global character token crashed my beta client and corrupted it to where even after a repair it wont play. No idea if it is a mac only issue but ... Woof. Are they really ready?

Look at https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/St...ory&category=2 Specifically the boosters, and how they all say "available until August 29th". |

@Thexder
I wonder if the box codes will stop working at that time as well. More specifically, the Architect Edition box, which gives the person using the code a choice of either the Cyborg Booster pack or the Magic Booster pack for free. Fpr the record, the MA code does still work as I picked one up for <$7.00 shipped and applied it just now (successfully).

it looks like the 'available until Aug. 29' text is gone... anyone else find this curious?
|
Is the Declaration of Freedom Sale still over on August 29th? Were the other CoH products similarly labelled due to an error that has now been corrected? Or, donning my tin-foil top hat, I wonder, has something changed behind the scenes for the CoH Freedom launch?
Incidentally, the F2P-account side of the CoH Freedom went into into open beta yesterday, so make of that what you will.
Perhaps the webserver guys got a bit over-zealous when they heard 'the sale's on till the 29th' and added all the unavailale text. Then marketing noticed and said 'No, we don't want to stop selling the game on the 29th, just the sale ends then'. Nice they're keeping the site updated though.
I mean it was a bit odd that they'd stop selling boosters without a concrete date for City:Freedom.

I have a quick question, first of all, I try to read the forum for answers but never find what I'm looking for ( I'm old ). You all seem to be up on the straight poop so to speak. I have 4 COH accounts, and whenever Freedom comes out I want to continue playing at whatever the highest ranking is, ( VIP I guess ). Do I need to buy anything ? And, what of my current characters, I do get to keep them?

As long as your accounts remain VIP, they will nose NOTHING AT ALL. All of your characters, items and everything you've ever paid for will still be there. You may end up having to pay additional money for some NEW stuff, but everything your accounts have now, they will keep if they go VIP.

Now the whole Booster Pack sell-by date is official:
With the launch of City of Heroes Freedom™ drawing nearer, and all the new and exciting things coming your way in Issue 21, we also have to say goodbye to some of the products you have come to love over the years.
As a result, we will be discontinuing the sale of all Booster Packs, Expansions and Boxed sets in the NCsoft store on August 30, 2011. The good news is that players who wish to take advantage of the current pricing are still able to do so before these items are officially discontinued. Likewise, remember that thanks to the Declaration of Freedom sale, the original City of Heroes® is available until August 29, 2011 (August 30 in Europe) for new accounts only at a super-low price of $1.99 (1.49 € /£1.29), as announced here. In addition, the original City of Heroes retail box will still be available for $9.99 USD (8.99 € /£5.99) after August 30. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy these products and buy yours at the NCsoft store now! |
EDIT: n.b. September 1st is of course the first day of the last quarter in not only the calendar year, but also NC Soft's fiscal year.
I'm moving the first week of September and will be without internet connection.
