Issue 21 Beta Mac Client - Update
The memory leak/crash issues are something that's deep within the way WINE allocates certain kinds of memory. It's going to take a lot more than a simple patch to fix it.
Actually those memory leaks, if you see how they behave it's probably an indication that the roots of Cider were never really intended to be used for long periods of time with something as intensive as games. It's been adapted way beyond its original purpose (running MS Office or IE in non-Microsoft operating systems for short periods of time), and this is the result.

Mac Users in total are likely LESS than the thousands of $$$ total that they'd lose but just releasing i21 with the Mac playability bugs intact.
Time for bootcamp...Windows is the only way to keep playing the game I'm afraid. EDIT ** OK, my doooooom has been corrected. Thanks for the update Zwill, glad to see you thinking about us Mac users. |
It would be more of a word of mouth thing like the fear that is caused when they hear Sony taking over or backing an online game.
Plus how do you try to explain away the supposed "Mac client" you sold people. I quoted Mac client because its more of a kludge then anything else. I guess if they gave me back my money I paid for the Mac Kludge we could call it a wash and I would have no gripe.
Whats a bit annoying is when he comes onto the server and announces something going on on test I can't even participate in or try to get some freebee because I can't get past training. It's BS I know and not the end of the world, but its like the dog pooping on the carpet then wagging his tail in my face.
On top the last update kept many off for several weeks. I really am expecting the same when i21 goes live.
On top the only person(s) was Cuppa and I think someone else ( sorry don't recall your forum name ) that really gave players insight on what to do and log in. I got more info from Cuppa then the people I pay to play. It really does not make sense to me.
I just think there comes a time where gaming companies just feel the losses just are not that big. It's either they are rolling in money so loosing several hundred or even a thousand players is not a big deal ( Defcon actually had a cool talk about this exact thing. The guy that was sued for 12 million by the big MMO did the talk if anyone knows his name ) or the game is low on the market that if they need 1000 players just to break even and are at 500 players loosing another 40 isn't just going to make a difference since they are already short.

As I understand it, one of the reasons Transgaming forked the 2002 MIT licensed W.I.N.E. base was so they could make changes to the underlying code that would enable that code-base to better handle tasks outside the scope of the W.I.N.E. project itself. In some cases that meant addressing some of the long-term application problems such as memory leaks. However, the tech was getting long-in-the-tooth.
Where this gets turned on it's head is late 2009 after Transgaming started work on the at-the-time Cedega 8 engines. The code-named Maudite engines were a significant re-write of the underlying engines. Much of the remaining WINEX code from 2002 was junked and replaced with new components.
Given the behavior described with the OSX-release behavior it really sounds like the OSX release is still using the (admitted by Transgaming) near-obsolete 7.x Cedega engines.
What would be nice to know at this point is if Transgaming / Paragon Studios are fixing the problems on the 7.x Cedega derived Cider engines, or if the Paragon Market crash issue is being fixed on the 8.x G.T.L. derived Cider engine.
If Transgaming / Paragon Studios are still trying to work with the 7.x Cedega base, many of the other underlying problems likely won't be resolved.
Update: We've worked out a fix for the store issue with Transgaming and we're now testing it internally. Once it finishes testing we'll be building it into a new client. No ETA, but there is forward movement.

Thanks in advance!
As an update: We're still testing the Mac update internally. We ran into a few issues and as a result had to go back to Transgaming. We may put up a functional "rough" build some time this week, however it will not be the final build, and would most likely require a full install rather than just updating.

@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.
Ghost Falcon says he hasn't been in the loop with Transgaming since his promotion to business management. I think Doc, Skippy, and Tele are snowed in with work.
By full install, that means "back up my costumes directory and expect to reinstall the Vidiotmaps packs" type of procedure?

Characters I am Currently Working on:
Corcra Dragan - MA/Regen Scrapper (Hero) - Virtue
Chronian Phoenix - Time/Fire Defender (Hero) - Virtue
Mindzeye - Psy/MM Blaster (Hero) - Virtue
Valence Vixen - Elec/Elec Stalker (Villain) - Virtue
I made an installer for the Mac a while back. Some people have issues with it, and ATM, I can't run OSx86 to test/develop more.. So it's kinda stuck as it is. The download is on the VidiotMaps site though.

Additionally, you can install all the vidiotmap pack stuff manually, just go into the package and swap out the relevant files in the various folders. (Right click on the application icon and select Open Package, then you can dig around in the folders.) I've only had to do that a few times, when there was a gap in the Mac installers due to lack of a programmer with the time to do it.

So has anyone heard an update about the Issue 21 Beta? Last I heard they had to go back and redo their internal testing after their first attempt. Is this still the case?
Thanks!

He directed me to ping Doc, Tele, and Skippy.
So far no response.
Hi Zwillinger,
As the last official update on this issue was on 8/22 (almost 10 days ago) & hopefully everyone is back from PAX, I am inclined to check in for another update.
Not trying to breath down anybody's neck, but just to remind everyone that we are pretty concerned about this issue. Lot's of cool Freedom stuff is being promoted, not least of all the VIP head-start, which makes Freedom feel somewhat more imminent.
Appreciate anything you can share at this point.
Thanks.

It does feel like Freedom is right around the corner, and so far the Mac-users haven't been able to test any of the Market functions, which is arguably the most important component of i21.

So could we pretty please have an update? You don't have to tell us everything.. but there's a cheesecake in it for you if you do!

Do me a favor...
Run the beta launcher and repair the client.
Tell us if it works . By works that you're able to access the Paragon Market.
(the answer should be yes)

YES IT DOES!
Now to finally test Beam Rifle...
I was starting to worry, but finally it happened. Thanks for coming through, Z
How do we 'repair the client'? I don't see an option for that in the launcher.

Edit: beyond that, if that doesn't work, no idea, at work, can't access Launcher right now to help you out.
And I agree with Redlynne, all is forgiven as long as we aren't left out in the cold.
Three cheers for Z!
