Time to 50

Just curious, I haven't been playing long (less than 3 months) and I have one toon up to 44, a few hovering around 20, and a few others at 10 or less. Someone in my SG told me he leveled to 50 in four days playing around 6 hours a day doing only radios. That sounded fast to me, but I spend so much time AFK and messing around at WW it wouldn't take much to level faster than me.

So my question is, what's the fastest you guys have gotten a toon to 50 w/o power leveling at AE, just playing the game?

Around 80 hours. Usually it takes me about 120 to 160.

5½ years.

You might not want to go by me.

I couldn't tell you in hours because I don't check that. My fastest was probably my fire/kin since, once you get to around 30, you can solo progressively larger and larger spawns. Took me about 2 months, but with plenty of playing other characters in there.

Leveling to 50 in 24 hrs of play doing just radios would require a double XP weekend or a significant amount of PL'ing. Now, if you build an AE fire farmer you can hit 50 in less than half that time.

Normally, I'd say it takes me somewhere between 60-150 hrs of play time to reach 50. I think the longer times there are a thing of the past though, and I'd be surprised if any of my more recent 50s took much more than 100 hrs. My Dark/SM Tank probably took the longest of those recent 50s. Let's see his current patrol time... 119 hrs. I'd have to guess about 20 of that is since hitting 50, so call it 100 hrs.

My first few were several hundred hours - but the game was more than a little different then, with earlier (and bigger) debt penalties, some content gaps, no patrol XP and the like.

Now? 75-150 hours, roughly.

I worked with a guy who used to say "What's the question behind the question?"

You can get to 50 remarkably fast, if you're determined and have some sort of reason or an axe to grind. My wife did it in one 2XP weekend- which is something like 60 hours total elapsed time, and there was some sleep in there- but that was after something like five years of gameplay. I bailed at level 38 or 44 and went to do other things.

But the important thing is, what's at 50? Getting there once, it's something to aim for, big milestone and all; but most of what people do at 50 is replay 1-49 content. There is a super seekrit clubhouse for 50's only, with new powers and missions and stuff, but there's only about five "you must be 50" trials and taskforces.

Enjoy the game. You're only going through for the first time once. Find out what the Clockwork have to hide; learn the story of Salamanca; try the Eden trial. There are tourists and commuters. I'm a commuter by now. You should look out the window and see new stuff while I'm sitting with my face in my book.

My first 50 in 2005 took 550 hours to get to level 50, I think my second was around 500. If I work at it these days, I could likely do it in around 100 hours, but I probably wouldn't enjoy it.

really 80hrs? REALLY? i have gotten a lvl 50 in 6hrs get a farmer like me and ask for farming for like 6hrs but he gets a 50 from radios????? WOW took me 1yr getting a lvl 50 from radios. But i think there is an alternate explanation he teamed with a farmer toon on +4/x8.

Fatsest I heard of was 18 hours - right after AE was issued,

Personally 1 month to lvl a 50 with several of various levels. I can pretty much play all day if I want to though.

SS/FA Farmer ~35 hours and some of that was crafting and respecing to try and get the build right.

Normal characters anything from 3+ years for a kin/dark defender to 120ish for controller.

I actually measured the adequate time and it works out to seven days. But it was based off a friend who played over the Dual Pistols DXP weekend. He made his DP blaster on launch night and was 50 by mid-Sunday.

I hope to get mine up the last five this DXP weekend coming

Not in the AE but my times have varied from 220 hours to 463 hours. I mostly solo . I always check the time on ny 50 shen he pops by consulting ans M named pedistrian.

I created my second character back in Feb 2005, and he just became my first 50 last weekend, so, not counting the couple years I wasn't playing, about 4 1/2 years for me.

The actual time played was 279 hours, though.

My first 50 took 200ish hours. My ex (who played on my account) took about 100 hours for his 50 (which is now mine). My second 50 (third on my account) took about 300 hours, but mostly because I spent a LOT of time exemplared, playing with friends. My third 50 (fourth on account) took about 25 hours, but the VAST majority of my levels were "surprise! gift level!" from a level pact with a friend who plays a LOT more than I do.

If you concentrate on one character it will seem short

If you spend your time playing lots and lots of Alts -- it will take a very long time.

Aye, I've but a handful of toons and usually just focused on one at a time. Nine months for Johnny B. Quantum, five for Johnny Taxibot (running a task force each week), and now I've transitioned into very slow progress because of having a toon each in blue-, red- and gold-side doing content.

My 1st 50? Think it was something like 700 hours. Spread out over 6 years... and that was my namesake main.

2nd 50 took about half that. Somewhere around 2 1/2 years.

3rd 50 went at lightspeed (my only MM) and hit 50 after a year and some change.

I most definitely am enjoying it. I just got to thinking after talking to my SG mate. My main has over 200 hours at 44 so I'm in no rush. Thanks for all the replys.

My fastest was probably about six months. My first 50 took about that long, and I was playing him nearly exclusively for a while. Another time, I made a character based off a friend's main, and playing together with me SKed up, it went rather fast.

On the other hand... the longest it's taken me if somewhere over five and a half years. And there are some characters that are still well below fifty that are older than that already. (I've got a level 20 Scrapper that I made in the spring of '05... obviously, I play him pretty infrequently, but he was 19 just last month )

Then again, I'm an example of someone who plays alts HEAVILY. I currently have 117, and I21 has given me ideas for as many as 25 more.

Every character I've brought to fifty took the time to accumulate history and by the end, the journey felt suitably epic and exciting for me. I can look back on being a tiny lowbie, no cape or anything, running around and not knowing how to really use my powers. Then, hopping around the mid-level zones, starting to feel 'super' for the first time, probably joining a giant monster fight I wasn't really ready for. All the wins and defeats, perfectly strategized victories and sloppy mistakes and close calls. That's what makes a level 50 for me. The character I feel that way about the least? The one that took 'only' six months while SKed up to my friend's character the whole way. I never bring him out because he doesn't really feel like he's mine, like someone just lent me a 50 who I don't understand.

/fire brutes are doing it in 11 hours, or less and that's total time playing the build. Note, this was done solo. One person said they took a couple days to do it, but not sure how much total time it took them. I know they said they could do it much faster if they did it again. The biggest reasons it's taking me so long in actual time to get my /fire brutes to 50 is I get tapped out after 1-2 runs and I am unlocking the patron pools and just auto completing those missions outside of the final one that actually unlocks it since you can't auto complete that one. They will be 50 before I have the day job badge for rested exp.

I may be able to give a slightly more in-depth and scientific explanation than some of the other fellows here, though I make no guarantees.

There are MANY factors that go into seeing how long a 50 will take. I'll put them in list form because... well... I like lists. Before I do, I will mention that anyone telling you more than 6-7 hours for a PL AE run is doing it wrong. I personally haven't PL'd myself in a while because I haven't had any reason to get a new 50. However, when I was doing it, I could set aside 4-5 hours, and just put my nose to the grind, and have a bright, shiny 50 in no more than 5 hours of straight gameplay. YMMV.

Now, for ACTUAL gameplay, you know... Enjoying the game without having someone else powerlevel you in AE or doing it yourself, here are the things that determine how long it'll take you.

1. Are you factoring your time in weeks and months, or hours? Weeks and Months will generally make it seem a lot worse than it really is. Consider this... My first fifty took me 3 years, but I only actually played him for about 90-100ish to get him there. It's all about how OFTEN you play the toon, not how MUCH you play him. Your time will vary a LOT depending upon how much you stick your nose to the game on that one toon, and on that note...

2. How many alts are you playing? This game is very friendly to those with Altitis. It has hundreds of story arcs to keep you busy, tons of repeatable missions, tip missions, task forces at almost any level, so on so forth. You never have to put it all into one toon. But if you do, you see a result much quicker, and you are also generally going to be more burned out, because you put so much time into him without breaking to go make something else. Playing alts makes your 1-50 time slower, but it also makes it more enjoyable.

3. Are you teaming a lot or solo a lot? This REALLY influences your XP gain. If you're trying to solo your defender to 50, you'll be there sometime around 2015. However, get on a team and let your defender buff/debuff everything, and let everyone else kill for you while you sit back and do your thing to make it easier for them to kill. Yes, on teams the XP gets split up, but you're also killing MANY more mobs MUCH faster than you would solo. However, if you've got some awesome Brute that you've put some work into and built correctly, you could probably solo him through radio missions faster than you could team on him. This could affect the actual hours-to-50 number by as much as 60-100 hours. Choosing the right type of gameplay for your toon can get you there faster, and can make it more enjoyable along the way.

4. What type of content are you doing? So you've got the fact down that you need to team or solo depending upon your toon. Now you need to figure out the fastest way to get to 50, while still enjoying yourself and experiencing the game. What's the best way to do that? Well, if all you're doing is going to PI with your friends and doing level 50 radio missions at +3/x8 with a team of 8, a couple of em 50's, you're pretty much getting powerleveled and you'll never experience the rest of the game. But you'll be 50 fast! My suggestion, though, is as follows. Make some friends, get into a good SG with people you like. For a new toon that you just created, this is the best way to get to 50 while still experiencing the game:

a. Sewers to 8 or 10
b. Frostfire Arc to 12
c. Positron TF part 1 and 2 to 15-17ish
d. Synapse TF to 20ish.
e. Sister Psyche TF to 23ish.
f. Story Arcs or radio missions in your zone of choice. I would personally check out some high-level Faultline stuff to 25.
g. Freaklympics arc at 25.

Well, you see a pattern. Get your Task Force Commander TFs done along the way every time. That way, you don't have to go back and do em later. You'll thank yourself. Scatter in some radio missions and bank missions along the way. Run the Midnighter's Arc at some point so you can do an ITF. Once you hit 45, get a good group of people together and do an STF. You'll enjoy gaining a couple levels from all the death, AND having a pleasant experience beating up the two hardest AVs in the game (Ghost Widow and Lord Recluse).

5. How much time are you playing the game every day and how much time in the game are you actually levelling? If you have enough time to log on and do a little bit each day, it'll seem like it's taking forever when it's really not. And when you DO play, are you jumping around Atlas, are you in WW buying and selling, or are you off killing stuff til the sun comes up the next morning? You'll notice a much greater impact by killing stuff, but you also miss some of the fun idle time you can spend in CoH.

There's no number for how long it takes to get from 1-50, unless PL'd by someone in AE when I can tell you 6 hours is the bare maximum you should ever have to spend in the AE building. Otherwise, you're looking at anything from 40 hours to 300 hours of play time. The average player who spends about 2-4 hours a day in the game, spends some of it in WW, some of it on other alts, etc, and follows sort of the pattern I laid out above, you'll be seeing about a new 50 a month. The biggest thing is, though it may seem like a grind once you hit 40, it's really not. You'll be amazed at how quickly 45-50 goes, ESPECIALLY if you run an STF the instant you hit 45, because that'll get you to 47-48 pretty easily, and then you're almost there, and can just finish it up in AE or radio missions in about an hour-hour and a half of game time.

I hope this lengthy reply helps and wasn't a whole bunch of useless information

These are both true statements that I can attest to from personal experience. I can't remember exactly how many hours it took to get my 50 What? You think I should have more than one after 7 years?) to that level, but he dinged when Tyrant fell on the rescue Statesman mission. That was good timing.
