City of Heroes Legacy Updater no longer in use from August 4

As of Thursday, 4 August 2011, the City of Heroes launcher will no longer be supported. After this date players will only be able to launch the game through the NCsoft Launcher, or through the Steam platform. If you haven’t already, now would be a great time to download the NCsoft Launcher! On average, players will experience faster downloads and increased usability with the NCsoft Launcher over the City of Heroes launcher. In addition, you’ll also receive the exclusive Wisps aura in-game for downloading and using the NCsoft launcher!

If you have any questions regarding the NCsoft Launcher, our F.A.Q. is available here.

If you can’t find an answer to your question , please don’t hesitate to use our Support page or our Issues & Bugs forums.

I do not think the subscribers playing on Linux operating subscriptions are interested in a F.A.Q.

We want to know why NCSoft feels like it can flip us a giant middle finger.

Care to answer on whether or not NCSoft is actually comfortable with ticking off existing subscribers?

Does this work with Steam yet?

This launcher has never worked for me. I've had extensive help from Alpha Wolf and Avatea, trying to get it to run. I've reinstalled XP, I've bought a new router. Nothing.

I have been playing since launch, with a few weeks here and there of inactive status due to finances. I run two accounts and have purchased every booster pack and expansion twice.

CoH is the only game I play, and I implore you to make this thing optional. If it goes live, i'm donefor. You're about to lose a loyal player who is willing to buy everything offered multiple times. I love this game, this community and this dev team. I'm really filled with dread over this.

because nowhere do the developers or publishers of the game, say that linux is a supported platform. They aren't giving you the finger, they are just ignoring you, because you dont matter( Linux players) in the grand scheme of things.

City of Heroes does currently work with Steam.

I switched to the new Launcher sometime ago and all Steam interaction stopped. I fire the CoH client up outside of Steam and so my Steam friends list etc no longer works with CoH.

I'll go back and give it a whirl this evening tho and see...

I would continue to work with Alpha Wolf, Avatea, and/or the support team. I assume they had you try downloading the game.xml from this thread?

If you can't get the NCSoft Updater to work you might be able to use Steam instead.

Yes, but does the NCSoft Launcher work with it yet?

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Since they acknowledged one question in here but not yours, I'm guessing the 2 people playing on Linux are not high on their priorities.

Wait....WTF?

EDIT: It was a 7 mb install, then told me to link my account to steam support via the going rogue website. Let's see what happens when I hit play....

Edit 1:54pm: Hitting play for the first time starts the installation of the NCSoft Launcher. Going through installation currently while trying to locate the thread about how the launcher should be setup.

Edit 2:01pm: NCSoft launcher is verifying files, but it looks like launching through Steam will just bring up the Launcher

Steam users, I cannot recommend enough this thread. Or anyone else who is upgrading to the launcher in the near future.

I just got anew computer and thank heavens the nc launcher works with it. But my old pc did NOT and I tried multiple ways. Why are you guys making this mandatory? Why is this the only choice? I really feel for the people that this doesn't work for.

according to my ISP, the ports they block are

Port Transport Protocol Direction Reason for Filtering
25 TCP SMTP Both* SMTP Relays
80 TCP HTTP Inbound Web servers, worms
135 UDP NetBios Both Net Send Spam / Pop-ups, Worms
136-139 UDP,TCP NetBios Both Worms, Network Neighborhood
445 TCP MS-DS/ NetBios Both Worms, Network Neighborhood
1433 TCP MS-SQL Inbound Worms, Trojans
1434 UDP MS-SQL Inbound Worms, SQLslammer
1900 UDP MS-DS/NetBios Both Worms, Network Neighborhood

dunno if any of these are Akamai. I just tried re-downloading the installer, but it seems to not wat to instal at all now. I click the link on this page http://www.cityofheroes.com/account/...taller_en.html
and nothing happens. I was going to try the link you posted again, as maybe I didn't do something right the first few times I messed with it, but now i'm just stuck.

I believe the NC launcher requires Port 80 to be open.

Actually, the NCsoft Launcher is:
  • Slower.
  • Still using Internet Explorer as it's basis on the Windows platform. I can actually prove this. The launcher uses IE's registry keys to identify itself.
  • Because it is using Internet Explorer, it presents a gaping security hole to your user's computer(s). So much for valuing your client's security.
  • It is much slower to launch the game.
  • It actually has higher system requirements than the game itself. This boggles the mind.
  • It uses the .NET framework.
And I'm using Vista Home.

The old updater worked well with Steam: you launched the launcher in Steam, then the launcher launched the game, and you could play CoH with Steam functionality. That doesn't work with NCSoft launcher.

How can your ISP block port 80 and you being able to navigate webs?
I though port 80 is http and that is vital to see webs.

Since I switched to the new Launcher, I find it better when it's comes to downloading and loading Coh. However if people are Complaining about the updater and Steam Problems, maybe you guys should invest sometime and try to fix the issues with the new Launcher before Switching Over.

Never play another NcSoft game, If you feel pride for our game, then it as well, I Superratz am Proud of all of you Coh people, Love, Friendship will last for a lifetime.

According to his/her list, only inbound port 80 requests are blocked. (So, no hosting your own web server...) Outbound, and response packets aren't blocked, so web surfing is not hindered.

Completely open? No, that isn't true. My router "stealths" port 80 (much like the posters ISP), and I don't have a problem with the new NCSoft Launcher. Now, it may be that my router is smarter than that ISP...

Okay, I'm going to post a dissenting opinion here (what's new, right?) and say that I actually like the NCsoft launcher. I like the fact that it updates my installations as they come down, not when I'm trying to log in and play the game. I like that it makes installation of the test client easy. Hell, I even like the fact that it collects other NCsoft games into an easy-to-use menu for me.

I do have one suggestion. (Read: suggestion, not complaint.) The NCsoft devs should have a popup menu so that when you right-click on the system tray icon, you get options to launch any of the games you have installed. Also, if you wanted to be really spiffy, they could add an option so that if a .cohdemo file is dropped on the client, it will play it for you. I'd put those in the suggestions forum here, but I don't think Paragon Studios maintains development on the launcher.

Oh, and quick question: What about Mac users? The FAQ just says that a Mac version of the launcher is coming. Does this mean it will be here, or will Mac users still be using the old launcher?

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

Because nowhere on the site, or in the game, does it say in any way shape or form that the devs and producers officially support this game running on Linux. Never have.

Saying something is 'not supported' doesn't always mean that there isn't a way for it to work, it means that they don't have the resources, or don't feel the need to dedicate resources, to ensuring that it works and that situation wasn't designed for.

This.

I miss having the Steam Overlay and Steam Notifications. If I get a steam chat message or want to message someone I have to Alt-Tab now rather than press Shift+` (I changed it from the default Shift+Tab)

Also, I like it to be showing I am playing the game as it will prevent stuff like the other day when someone asked me to join their game while I was playing CoH and I had to tell them I couldn't because I was in-game.

And I just want to also say I disagree with SnowGlobe in the regards of the Speed. It downloads patches and applies them way faster than the old one. And I'm also on Vista Home (premium)
