Claiming aura for accepting new launcher.

How can I claim the aura offered for accepting the new crappy launcher COX is using now? Doesnt seem more then just added advertisment to me.

You should automatically get it by just logging in with the launcher. No claiming needed.

That is, assuming they're still rewarding it.

The new launcher works much better and faster for me. Cut down my downloads for new patches by a lot.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

If you use the "Create Shortcut" option in the launcher and use that shortcut, you barely see the launcher come up as it launches the game.

Ditto.

No kidding. On the old updater, I was typically capped around 100KB/s...don't remember exactly. On the new launcher, I get upwards of 800+, 900+, I've gone over 1k+ KB/s a few times.

The new launcher is stupidly resource intensive if you just leave it sitting around, but closing it after use is very simple (it's a checkbox in the options).

Also the new launcher only modifies files that need modifying. The old patch program would rewrite even unmodified files which increases the odds of fragmenting. Also very large files like sound.pigg (500MB) could really slow down the patch process on machines with less than 2GB of memory.

It's not "crappy" by a long shot. As others have said, it's faster. It's also more efficient, especially if you leave it running in the background, as it will automatically download and apply patches. It's even better if you play multiple NCSoft games, you can launch them all from one consolidated launcher.

Agreed. There's been so much complaining about it, I was beginning to think I was the only one who preferred the new launcher to the old one.

It's built with Microsoft .NET

It's cleared the barrier of crapware with room to spare.

Depends on your own OS, applied service packs, and installed versions of Microsoft.net.

If you are up to date with Windows 7, yes, it is efficient.

If you aren't, it is not.

Okay, fair enough. Point in it's favor, although this tech is exposed through SharpBITS and Xdelta rather than the launcher itself.

Nobody that I know of contests NCSoft's desire to have a central launcher for their applications.

All of the complaints about the launcher are derived from what the launcher is created with, specifically and to the point, C# / Microsoft .NET.

Now, honestly, I've been over it so many times before I'm getting sick of beating people over the head with .NET's status as Crapware, so I won't do it yet again.

I will point out that had NCSoft created the launcher is just about any other IDE / API toolkit, be it Java through Netbeans, Ruby on Rails through JRuby's support after Oracle decided to be a jackass, or QT, NCSoft wouldn't have had to create extra work for themselves by creating a completely different launcher inside of Xcode on OSX. Nor would NCSoft have knocked out support for City of Heroes Linux subscribers playing through Cedega or WINE. It's likely that NCSoft's other titles would also work under those translation environments without the .NET-crapware barrier.

1) I don't give a rat's rear what it was coded in. It damn well works.
2) Works great in Vista and on my XP box, too.........
3) Haven't seen any vague hint of a memory leak issue on my end. You don't know what "your own crappy hardware" is, do you?

It MAY be crapware, but it's still a step up from the old launcher. Which would appear to, if not actually, freeze on the larger .pigg files. Plus, NClauncher opens links in default browser instead of IE. I would have PAYED for that functionality in the old updater.

True dat.

It works much faster and better on my daughter's XP machine too, not just my Windows 7 one.

This. Overall the new launcher works far better for me than the old one did.

When j_s posts it's useful to bear in mind that j_s hates anything that uses anything from Microsoft with the burning fury of thousand suns and will endlessly disparage it with nary a pause for breath. j_s will happily misuse terminology as well as distort and misrepresent facts in order to further denigrate M$. Considering that MS products are usually mediocre enough on their own merits it's a wee bit obsessive. That said, i'm not exactly a fan of Microsoft, but improved functionality is improved functionality even if it uses MS resources.

I don't believe they are. The aura was awarded by switching to the new updater while it was in the testing stage, and the old updater was still available. If the testing is over, and everyone has been switched to the new one (which I think is the case; I don't know, I've been using the new updater since the day it was released), then the aura is no longer available.

However, I seem to recall someone (Zwillinger?) saying that the aura would be made available to people who missed it at some point in the future. In light of the Freedom announcement, I'd guess it's in the store for Paragon Points.

I thought I remember reading something like that, but this is the post I was thinking of. Not the same.

Paragon Points seems like an acceptable way to get it to me.

I'm sure the testing is over, but everyone has not been switched to the new one. I know because I'm still using the old one and it works just fine (I've actually been meaning to switch, just keep forgetting/procrastinating). Can't comment on whether the aura is supposed to still be rewarded, but I'll check if I get it when I do finally switch (soon, I promise).

Edit: I just upgraded to the new updater and started using it last night. When I checked the costume creator, the Wisps Aura was available, so apparently it is still being rewarded even at this late date. If you didn't get it, definitely bug it.

Actually I went to the tailor to change some colors on my powers on one of my toons. Its under the aura set. I selected it and it works fine and I was able to choose the color I like. I still say the launcher is crappy as far as my systems are concerned. Because that is how I see it. My game still plays well and that is what keeps me as a subscriber to both my accounts. I just hope that COX's Freedom is the Future promotion will help strengthen the franchise and not weaken it. Like most things.....time will tell. Laterz...

Saying "It's crappy" without saying exactly why doesn't really help make it better, now, does it.

Does it load patches slower? Have you even bothered to look at the options to optimize it more to your liking? People that called it crap before using it, based on previous experience with an older NCSoft launcher, have said that this iteration works much better.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

Works fine for me and only uses 80 MB of RAM, which is insignificant.

Start the launcher and under File->Settings->Advanced there's a check box to allow launching multiple instances of a game. You can get to the settings with Ctrl-S, but for some reason they seem to have required using the mouse to access the Advanced tab.

Mediocrity would be a step up for most Microsoft products.
