Superman according to modern canon doesn't know he's an alien till year 10ish
Superman also would have debuted just 4 months earlier if they keep to comic chronology so no... they wouldn't know they had made contact with an alien... to a degree... already.

Plus.....you know.....Waller could be lying.

This is Amanda Waller, after all

Would be cool if DC used Waller in a similar way to Marvel using Samuel L Jackson did in their movies, a way to start unifying it all.

/Bringing this thread back on topic..

So I went to see this movie with my family last night,... I have no idea why the critics are bashing this movie.. It was a pretty fun flick.. and no there wasn't a lot of comedy.

Maybe they saw Ryan Reynolds and thought it was meant to be funny? Who the heck knows.. (Yes I know he has done serious roles before)

I liked the movie,.. also the two scenes after the credits were cool! (those that stayed for that know what I mean )

The green lantern corps were cool looking as well.. I liked how they used the rings powers so it didn't look too cartoony.. it was cool

I will say I wish I saw Ryan Reynolds play Wally West or Kyle Rayner.. but as hal Jordan he didn't do a bad job. Those that say he did are simply being picky. I don't get all the back lash this movie is getting. The movie wasn't bad IMO.

Durakken hates it. Foamy is overwhelmingly underwhelmed.

I'm probably going to love it.

I enjoyed it myself. I never was jarred out of the film and there was some geniunely fun moments. As for the guardian being Parallax(or possessed by it.), I guessed that angle pretty early on when you see him in the cave. I'm going also guess Parallax still exists as fear incarnate and will be mentioned again if there's a trilogy.

My Complain...Amanda Waller was much too thin. All roles that larger people could play seem get cast as the beautiful people anyways heh. (Such as the Blob in Xmen.) Not a deal breaker by any means but just was like I bet that's Waller when I saw her. I think it's cool she made an appearance as this could be start of DC showing some greater level of connections between series.

I didn't hate the movie, but I didn't like it. I saw alot of good potential in it, but thought the editing was jarring to the story flow and the pacing was inconsistent, and for alot of it slow. It had some good parts, but to tell the truth, I was bored through most of it, and when it was supposed to get excited in the action scenes there was no buildup to it so I was like "oh..they're doing something." and couldn't really enjoy them.

I'm usually a big fan of CBMs, I've seen them all at least once in the theaters and own a rather large collection of them. I'm hoping there is a better cut in the works for when the blu-ray of this comes out.

Just saw it with my wife and we both liked it, the 'hated it' nerdragers and G/L defenders have already overtaken the thread but I'll add a couple observations.

Spoilers
Yea it's big... /michael scott/... that's what she said.

  1. Sinestro turned power hungry too easily and put on the yellow ring after there was any reason to whatsoever --clumsy post credits sequel set up
  2. Like Superman Returns too much time spent on the Hal and Carol re-budding romance drug the pace
  3. Blake Lively weak
  4. Tim Robbins weak
  5. Blink and it's over 'training' period
  6. 5 ring projections in what was otherwise a pretty good final battle almost ignored what you'd expect to see in a Green Lantern film

Bottom line, it had holes but it was definitely, definitely, nowhere near the unwatchable wreck the hyper nerdragers are insisting it is.

Both me and my wife would recommend it.

In hindsight I'm glad they didn't cast Nathan Fillion for this movie, because at least with Ryan Reynolds you got a sense they had a baseline for the way they wanted to write Hal's character and they had a selling point through the main actor; if it had been Nathan Fillion I'm sure they wouldn't have marketed it as heavily, would have been lost as far as the tone they were shooting for, and probably would have felt even less pressure to put out some quality work in other aspects of the movie.

I couldn't help but think this as I rewatched Knight and Day and thought back to RED, as both movies were fairly quiet in terms of marketing yet received high marks from audience members and were overall very entertaining movies. I have to assume that the involvement of Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis, respectively, had something to do with the creative team behind those movies wanting to step up their game and create something that they could be proud of even though it may not receive a lot of exposure.

Or maybe those guys just do a better job of picking their movies. /em shrugs

Back from seeing it and just as I predicted I enjoyed the heck out of it. I'll agree that the entire Hammond subplot should have been dropped. That would have made for more time on Oa. And yes they messed around with the continuity but name me even one comic book movie that didn't take huge liberties with the characters. For that matter name me one comic book writer who didn't take huge liberties with everything that happened in the comic before they took over.

I still liked it tons more than First Class though. Was it better written? No. Was it better acted? Not a chance (except for January Jones who was out acted by the cardboard boxes in GL).

So if it's not better written and the acting isn't as good why did I enjoy it more? Because it was more fun. It's the same reason I enjoy Blade more than I enjoy Schindler's List. The same reason I enjoy Scott Pilgrim more than Henry V. Because although they are not superior artwork they are more entertaining.

And because Hal Jordan was a "super hero". He doubted himself but he pulled his act together and went out to be a hero. The First Class crew on the other hand was a hodgepodge of people who hated themselves, considered themselves freaks, and were depressed because they had abilities. They didn't doubt themselves, they just felt sorry for themselves.

So Green Lantern was entertaining to me because it was about a super hero. Not about some emo guy who just happened to have powers.

In other words, exactly like the comics...

I think out of all the reasons I liked it, this is near the top.

Didn't notice this thread earlier, so I thought I'd repost my thoughts here. I liked it. So did my father (went for father's day) and he collected the Green Lantern comics back in the 40's and 50's so his word is good enough for me

I like Green Lantern, not a big fan, but I'm not a stranger to the story either. I have long since learned to 'turn my brain off' to a lot of the technical aspects of a film and just watch it.

The CGI wasn't bad but in a few places where you could see the 'zippers' so to speak. The acting was good enough... The biggest complaint was a few areas of pacing seemed off somehow, but there was a lot of story to get through.

At the end of the day, it's an action movie about a popular comic book hero. I liked the theme they were trying to present (I actually liked the Parallax origin story and look far better than the comic one). For those who think Parallax looked like a big dust creature, watch carefully for the faces stretched in agony and the skeletons of its victims reaching out to pull others in over the length of its psuedopods. I liked the character of Hal Jordan. Not exactly the way he was presented originally in the comics, but this one fit into the story well with the theme of awakening the courage within himself. I can see the Hal Jordan we know being better represented in sequels, or a JLA movie, if they do either. This was about him maturing and 'coming into his own' responsibilies.

All and all a fun film. I think we need to stop over analyzing these movies for the most part and just enjoy them for what they are, or they're going to stop making them.

"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.

On one hand somebody wanted to do a GL movie. On the other someone else knew that every scene off Earth, every moment Hal's in the suit, nearly every other GL would be a CGI construct, would raise the cost of the movie. I'm visualizing the amount owed on a gas pump while someone is filling up their super Hummer.

That's why the training took 2 minutes. That's why the bulk of the other Lanterns look like they were done on the cheap. Somebody was watching the cost going up and up and probably cut off the purse strings. Then they were forced to edit together what they had done and try to make a cohesive film out of it. Which is why some of the scenes didn't flow together at all.

I still thought it was enjoyable. However I do laugh at some of the reviews that simply didn't realize that GL predates a lot of films that they said the movie was ripping off from, like comparing the ring to the Force.

Saw it this evening. Popcorn flick as I expected, so it was fun. (Great score.)

SPOILERS

Yes, the moment Angela Bassett opened her mouth and introduced herself as Amanda Waller, I went "YES!" and John looked at me like, "What?" (He's not a big DC fan.) It'd be neat if Project Cadmus became the cohesive thread thru the DC films the way SHIELD is to Marvel.

Did anyone else laugh to hear Clancy Brown voicing Parallax? (Hearing the Kurgan voicing, as Psynder13 refers to it, the giant poop cloud was surreal to say the least... especially since he also voices Lex Luthor in the JL/JLU animated series.)

And now that someone mentions it... yeah, I could see Ryan Reynolds playing Wally West.

I saw GL on Saturday with the family, and we all loved it. It wasn't as strong as Thor, but I too can't see what all the critics are raging about.

As my son put it afterward, "The critics were right about 'The Last Airbender' but they were wrong about 'Green Lantern'".

Will definitely pick this up when it comes out on disc.

::::::SPOILERS AHOY!!!!!!::::::

My favorite scene is when Parallax is attacking the city, and GL is holding him off with a force field. Parallax is spouting a monologue ("Your powers are weak, I will destroy your world, blah, blah, blah"), while Hal is reciting the GL oath:

"I can feel your fear..."
"In brightest day"
"You will fail and your world will die"
"In blackest night"

Yeah, that was the defining "Hal's a GL now" moment, and it worked quite well IMHO.

I think GL's lower weekend take was more due to reviews than it's subject matter. The one review I heard over the radio, the reviewer admitted to reviewing it based on previous superhero movies (and thusly reviewed it poorly).

Personally, I want to see a sequal, but if it doesn't bring in enough I just hope DC doesn't go, scrap any of the other characters outside the main two of getting a movie.
