Forum suggestion: Hide post count
i agree with you that post count means about as much as vet badges in that it doesnt do anything to show how much a person knows about the game
an option to hide it or make it so only you could see it wouldnt be too bad of an idea

I don't think hiding post count would help much, Bill. Sure, it would stop people saying things like "You think you're all that because you have 30 000 posts?!?" but it won't stop people from saying things like "I've seen your posts since I started and you come off like a 14-year-old idiot." Both of those I've had said to me directly, and fairly recently, to boot. Trolls looking for an insult will find another way.
That said, I have no problem with an option to hide our post count like we were allowed to hide our rep. I can't see what it could hurt if it were set per-person. I still wouldn't hide mine, though. What else could I use as a sense of unreasonable pride?

GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Sure. Post count means precisely squat.
The only things it means are either A) That person is an active member of the community at large, or possibly B) That person spends way too much time in the Forum Games section.
I've had a lot* of people give me flak for having a high post count, saying many of the same things Bill mentioned, and my post count isn't even all that high. I have nearly 7,000 posts over the course of 5 years. Compared to some of the more prolific posters, that isn't much at all.
It would be nice if people were forced to actually respond to what I say with a valid point of their own, instead of using the "Oh, you just think you're right because you post a lot" as their reason for why I'm wrong.
No, I think I'm right because I AM right, and if the only thing you can say to refute my point is to attack my post count, well, you pretty much just proved my point for me.
I don't mind is someone actually does refute my point with a valid argument, but it would be nice to be able to remove the post count counter-argument from the equation.
("A lot" is subjective, it may not actually be that many, it just seems like it is because they tend to stick in my mind)

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

Post counts are sort of like Edits on Wikipedia.
Sure, you can sign up for an RFA after having 30k edits, but how many were just redundant?
(this thread will auto-repost every 41 seconds to increase my post count. Wish me luck!)
Meh. I've been here since forever and still haven't broken 3,000. There are people who have been here less than a year with 10,000. It basically just means nothing.
If someone looks ay your post count and uses it as an argument against you, it's a pretty good barometer of their idiocy.

Gotcha.
Well that was fun.
Carry on.
I suggested this a few times way back when there were still separate American and Euro forums.

Why waste the time coding this into the forums just because people are stupid?
GG and I both have ridiculous post counts. Everyone with a brain here knows that we have those for completely different reasons.
Those without a brain can't be helped anyway.
I see no issue that needs resolving.
Be well, people of CoH.

Post count's an odd thing.
I generally ignore it (barring "Hey, that's a nifty number coming up" - see also having 1337 posts and the like.) Yet it seems to be a target for people who I *dare* do anything but rain puppies upon and strew kittens in their paths for the five thousandth "we should be F2P! We need vehicles! This is a unique idea!" post.
I was even informed of this by a friend *outside* of the forum - that in a certain global channel, someone who shall remain nameless not only was misrepresenting pretty much everything I'd said, but claimed (as though he had the slightest clue about me) that I held myself and what I said in some sort of high regard because of my post count.
Let me put this bit on record: Post count means only *slightly* less when it comes to ranking what someone says than the color of their desktop wallpaper, and is about as relevant as the length of their nostril hair to anything in game. I. Don't. Care. That goes for *my* post count as well as yours. And that goes for Noobie McNooberson with 1 post all the way to the heavyweights such as Arcanaville or FatherXmas.
My suggestion?
Allow me to hide that post count (and anything associated with it, such as a title.) You want to disagree with me, fine. You want to dislike me because I'm stubborn, grumpy, obstinate and don't agree with you, pointing out what I see as flaws or pointing out minor, irritating *facts?* Fine. But let's give the option of removing a pointless, distracting target that we have in the form of post count.
If I'm disagreeing with you, it's because I disagree. Not because I have X many posts. If I continue to argue with you, it's because you haven't convinced me, not because "you poor, foolish low post count person! Bow before my number!" The only numbers I'd suggest anyone bow before are those of our Queen of Maths, Arcanaville - and no, not her post count, either.
So let me get rid of that little distraction.
