56 Billion inf ?
Per the graphic on Kokatu celebrating the anniversary, that (56 Billion inf) is the amount of inf 'held by players' in 2011
<link> http://kotaku.com/#!cityofheroes That has got to be wrong, or not counting inf in market bids or something. Titan Tracker has characters tracked at 75 694 with an average inf pot of 69 183 425. Simple Average* number of chars estimates 5 255 449 696 700, over 5 trillion inf. Do you think the Devs dropped a factor of 1000 when creating the grpahic ? |
Someone with, say, five 2 billion INF bids on non-fillable items and 500k on the character would only count as 500k.
But that's just a guess.
1. Commas are your friend.
2. 56 billion is held by Smurphy alone.
3. Kotaku is full of it.

heh. I have two characters carrying a 'mere' billion. Therefore, I represent 1/28th of all the money held by players and their characters in-game.
I have my doubts.....
I think they're counting actually "on character." (I want to say CIT does this too, but I'd have to check or have a CIT person say.)

EDIT: I bet if we polled the market forum regulars we could come up with more than 56 billion inf even neglecting market "storage"
Main Character: Ice/Storm/Ice Controller (Justice, 1340 badges)
I just looked at it and assumed 56 trillion inf.
I, among others, was mistaken!
(amount dropped into prestige by one SG > total "amount held by players" seems unlikely. )

Yeah, I have nearly 20B on hand in cash. I doubt I count for half of the total.

Looks off by a significant amount to me.

Add another 64.4 billion to your total, not including today's profits. A hair more than that, 'cuz a lot of my "butler" characters on the second account are not included in my spreadsheet, but I doubt that accounts for much more than a billion or two pocket change.
Isn't there an alternate definition of a billion as 10^12? Yeah, here we go:

I have this vague recollection that in Europe, what Americans refer to as a trillion is a billion. Could that explain it, perhaps?

Bloody trivial names - and short scale people not even thinking twice about it! As noted by Bladesnow, there are two different conventions for this thing - numbers were probably given in long scale while he converted it to actual numbers using short scale notation.
Judging by the number that's obviously out of order - experience earned - the numbers cited are off by 10^3. I'd rather believe that the overall experience earned leaves the average created character at level 25 (373 809 exp) than at level 2 (374 exp).
5,6*10^13 inf in the game seems way more plausible, which is why scientific notation should be used whenever there's a chance to cause confusion. Whether or not that excludes bids made for storage, some people hold a disproportionate amount of the stated total inf judging by this thread. While that's not surprising, it would be fun to see a curve of number of global handles vs inf held by global handles.

I see the comma being used for decimals now and then, but it's not the convention we use where I am. Another reminder that things we may believe are standards often aren't.
I suspect the person who passed the statistics spoke out "billion" and meant million-million, perhaps from time spent out of the US. The person transcribing the data heard "billion" and wrote down the US interpretation of thousand-million.
Yeah, I looked at the number, was like "wait...what?" counted the zeroes, then had a good laugh.

I can assure you there is more liquid inf in the game than 56B because I have well more than that liquid on toons myself. Not quite 2x but a lot more than that. They dropped some zeroes.

Agreed especially on part 3. Come on get realistic I have 12 characters I am doing Incarnate content with and between them alone I personally have 9 billion in INF. So EVERYONE else that plays COH combined only has another 47 Billion? Heck I am not even a Market player.. that cash comes strictly from .. playing a ton of TFs and from Selling purple drop recipes I don't need for like 300 million , 400 million or my all time high .. 500 million THAT was a good day

They wanted it to LOOK Pretty and 56,000,000,000M was all that would fit across the page in the type style they wanted.
Then the Proofreader decided the M was an error and removed it. Even prettier!
So we get
56,000,000,000
instead of
56,000,000,000,000,000
or possibly
560,000,000,000,000,000

Those numbers doesn't make sense, unfortunately. It'd mean that the average character ever created holds 1,33*10^9 inf (or ten times more if you add seven zeros). That's assuming no character having been deleted since they're stating it's held by player characters 2011. As soon as you start removing any one of those 42 million characters created, the average inf per character goes up. An error of the magnitude 10^3 seems much more plausible to me just judging by that.

Out of idle curiousity, I pulled the following numbers off City Info Tracker, which allow you to set a lower bound on total influence supply:
Total characters tracked: 75,968
Average influence per character: 69,370,297
Simply multiplying those together gives you 5,269,922,722,496. Only a fairly small fraction of the player base is probably using CIT. Regardless of a bunch of caveats, the fact still remains that CIT observes and reports nearly a hundred times as much liquid influence out there as the figure cited on that graphic.

I always knew I had bad altitis but I never thought I was everyone in the game and then a few more.
