Will we ever move back out of GrecoRoman myth?
Jack Emmert (Statesman) was really, really into Roman Mythology when he started designing this game. His handprint is very visible still, even though he left years ago. That's why it's so prevalent.
As for you question.
I'd like to see touches of Nordic, maybe Odin and Ragnarok.
Hints of King Arthur and his whole legend.
Legendary monsters (non combat badges i.e. Sally)
Spot Bigfoot wondering around the maze in Perez 3 times for a badge.
Maybe have the chupacabra running amok in Nerva...

I'd love to explore the Aztec mythology. Bring on the incarnates of Tonatiuh, Metztli, Atlacamani, Xochipilli, etc. Not only that, but they could also give us tribal costume options as well!
well,as mentioned, greek myth was jacks thing before he came to coh, and it does tend to speak to a civilization founded on a lot of its principles and imagery. that aid, there is an underlying nudge to celtic mythology in croatoa(though occasionally paraphrased and with some shifts in characterizations) also, hidden in the origins of hero one and some of the halloween events and vet pets, the english fae mythology is an underlying element, both for its arthurian elements and witht he inclusion of the unseelie court, and presumably the seelie court for the hero vet pets. I'd love to see that, and my desire to see some Japanese or Korean mythos here is well documented. i guess the problem is that issues hit maybe 3 times a year, and any developing story is going to take multiple "acts" to tell, so story progression is necessarily slow. Thats one reason the praetorian thing is wearing on some people.
But more is always good. heck, i know nothing of hmong culture, but id love to see the tsoo fleshed out, learning new cultures is always a broadening experience, also, id think indian avatars would be a perfect fit for the concepts of incarnates, right? would probably bring some kick butt costume stuff/weapons with it.

I recall running a tip mission with a friend of mine where every time they referred to themselves, they called themselves 'The Hmong Tsoo' as though after years of not remembering they were Vietnamese, they now remembered and hooked 'Hmong' onto their group name as a reminder of what their actual ethnicity was.

The animal pack/beast run part is the only thing we know for certain what it is.

Atlantis is mentioned on the final mission of the ITF - one of the 5th Column soldiers says "Atlantis? Really?" - but then we crash the party before his friends can reply

The Coralax are very obviously inspired by Lovecraft. The Cthulhu mythos would not be out of place. It would also relate to Rularuu, in the sense of the Elder Gods being so far beyond good and evil that we can't possibly comprehend their motivations. Alignment: hungry, as it were.

Calystix the Shaper, also called Calystix the Zealot. The first records of a priest called Calystix date from ancient Rome, where a Legion discovered an ancient temple to a Cult of the Shaper. This cult was led by a high priest called Calystix, who ordered the townspeople to slay the Legion. The soldiers were nearly overcome, but they won and put the temple and the town to the torch for their abhorrent practices. Later records of a Cult of the Shaper led by Calystix re-occur in the middle ages, and again during the Enlightenment. The last known occurrence of the Cult was in a small Massachusetts fishing village in the 1920s, though it's unknown if it was lead by a priest called Calystix, as the cult was destroyed by the American Navy for crimes of piracy and cannibalism. |

Will we ever back out of GrecoRoman myth?
Not until the engine and code gets upgraded so we can have a Wrestling power set.
I would love to see well-researched African legends and mythology brought into the game.
But barring that, the stories and myths of India, Southeast Asia and Mayan stuff would be cool too.
Hmm, maybe I should design a few story arcs in AE? Hmm, hmm, hmm.
"Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking of them."
You know what else would be not only be something that would be epic as well as even workable into the current Well of furies lore?
Mesopotamian Mythology, specifically The King of Heroes: Gilgamesh
I could even see it now: The whole 'Two Thirds God' thing was because Gilgamesh was already a demi-god who gained the notice of the Well of Furies, and Gilgamesh basically became the original Incarnate.
Hell, he's even got parallels to Marcus Cole, only instead of hiding behind the walls of his city from his Hamidon (Humbaba), he goes out and kills it with his best friend, just because.
To add a bit of twist, the Well withdrew its support from him because despite Gilgamesh probably having drunk directly from the Well, he still was able to shrug off any and all attempts of the Well of Furies to control him.

True, but I'm not sure the Tsoo would be the greatest of guides into hmong culture when they run around with Japanese swords, use Chinese sai, and have very strongly Japanese (at least to my knowledge) tattoo artwork, wear Japanese Han'nya masks, and have a boss in Radios/newspapers named 'Katana'.

oh, and almost forgot, a really good idea that i beleive fredvard mentioned was to expand the culture of the kheldians. it would be a mythos they would have free reign with and wouldn't have to worry about offending anyone. and yes, khelds are kind of a nick of h.p. lovecraft's "shadow out of time" as disembodied space travelers that take their host bodies forms but recall elements of past hosts, though they tend to be better about consent

There's possibly a great many cultural / mythology sources to be tapped. To be honest though, luddite that I am, I only know of those that were in Age of Mythology

Also, Warshade lore ties loosely into Ancient Egypt.

Of all the real world mythologies emphasized in City of lore, GrecoRoman comes up again and again and again and again, almost to the point where it seems to have been the only mythology that actually really existed.
The break from this is in Croatoa, which, while it feels like a non-sequitur (and honestly, it kind of is) it is a breath of fresh air from other mythological references in the game that are all GrecoRoman centered.
Now seems like it would be an especially good time to look into other mythologies, especially the Nordic myths (I mean, come on, Valhalla anyone? And you think Odin will care about your alignment as long as you even say you'll be willing to help fight in Ragnarok?) with the whole Incarnate business going about.
So this thread's kind of about two things: what other mythologies would you like to see City of delve into, and do you think the devs would seriously do it?
(Also, family friendliness is clearly not an issue given that the main mythology emphasized is wonderfully loaded with... uhh... Jerks to say the least)
