Currently game mastering a home brewed D&D 3.5 campaign that's been running off and on for an embarrassingly long time.* It started off with a traditional European high fantasy flavor but then had a very strong tilt towards Planescape and African mythology and cultures in the last 15 years. At the moment it's currently halted because about half of my crop of steady players died, flew overseas or off to university.

Currently playing in a long running, on again off again bizarred home brew mixture of Palladium and Marvel Superheros campaign that I was introduced to back in 1989. Recently the game master, who is now overseas, is playing this game with me and a bunch of his friends in New York City via Skype. Are we hardcore nerds or what?

Games I've played or game mastered in, in rough order of enjoyment and appreciation:

GURPS (In backgrounds almost too great to number.), Hero System (Champions and traditional high fantasy.), Paranoia(!?), Toon, Call of Cthulhu, Ringworld, the original Marvel Superheroes game by TSR, Villains and Vigilantes, Tunnels and Trolls, WoTC's Star Wars, Vampire

Game backgrounds and rules systems I like or would like to play in:

Godlike, CthulhuTech, the sadly defunct Underground and that's about it.

Greatest unfulfilled ambition despite 30 years of pen and paper RPGs:

To run a hard science fiction game based on Hero or GURPs rules with no psychic nonsense, no cliches around military SF like Troopers, no Trek references and definitely no Star Wars references. Maybe something like Vinge's Zones of Thought, Baxter's Xeelee Sequence or Bank's Culture.

Either that or actually start writing hard science fiction.

Probably will never happen.

* Since my sophmore year in high school in 1978.

First place to look is your local gaming store. Next is things like Craigslist, as crazy at that may sound.

I ended up having to move away from both of my gaming groups for work several years ago, so I've been PnP-ing about twice a year (once in the Summer and once at New Years) until recently. We have a group of 5, three of us here, the other two 2 1/2 hours south, and we game using ooVoo and Coccinella (Jabber chat client w/a shared whiteboard) every two weeks.

Currently Running:
D&D 3.0 - We have three GMs in our group, so we're doing four-session story arcs, and trading off who runs every session. That way, the person who starts the arc gets to finish it, but then gets a two-session break in the middle. The only problem is remembering to leave the story threads for the next guy.

Currently Playing:
D&D 3.0 - We're playing in Forgotten Realms, a custom campaign set out of Arabel, called "The Order of the Emerald Rose" which is a name based on the last New Year's Eve game we ran (and where we figured out the logistics of the current campaign).

Owned:
Dungeons & Dragons, 1st Ed through 4th Ed, mainly Forgotten Realms-focused, but still have some DarkSun, Krynn, Planescape, and Spelljammer stuff laying around too.

White Wolf (Vampire, Mage, Werewolf, Wraith).

Space 1889

Wheel of Time

Villains & Vigilantes (an old stand-by we haul out from time-to-time).

So I'm invovled with 2 games per month. It seems that as we get older and other responsibilities abound, it gets tougher and tougher to get a game going, let alone one that happens more frequently than monthly.

Currently Playing: Unholy Preyer. Its based on the fate dice system, and the Dresden Files game stat sheets, but is a universe created by our GM. Playing a hunter that keeps supernatural evil at bay.

Currently Running: Shadowrun 4th Edition. This has been an interesting game mostly cause I'm GMing. I wanted to play but couldn't find any groups in my area, so I started up one. Just getting ready to start into our first long term campaign.

Been thinking about finding a group for Exalted.

Especially since Exalted seems to be a fantasy/super hero weird kind of crossover where everything is over the top to an almost comic book level.

Was thinking Luna Exalted purely so I could turn into a gigantic version of one of these

Your local gaming store is probably the best start, yeah. The site Pen and Paper Games also lets you register yourself, along with the systems you're interested in. You can see what other players are in your area, and invite them to games. I actually got invited to two games through the service, so it apparently works... although it definitely works better if you're the one doing the inviting, since that was two invitations in about 18 months in a dense residential area.

If you're interested in play-by-post online games, Myth-Weavers, Plothook.net, and The Tangled Web all have forums for that. A lot of game companies' sites also serve to hook up players and GMs for online games, and there are also some fan sites for specific games, like Pattern Spider for Exalted or Dumpshock for Shadowrun.

If you're interested in non-play-by-post online games, the site rpgloop helps hook up players and GMs for online games played over gaming software like OpenRPG or MapTool (both free.)

Pff. Batman would probably be a starting character in Exalted. On the Celestial power scale, at least.

Well, if it helps, I once lost a character to forces of acceleration.

Apparently, trying to whip a mech around a starship really fast (Ender's Game style) by accelerating at ten Gs at the end of a relatively short tether is scary. My GM made me break out the physics reference text and calculate what happened to my character. The results of that calculation were chunky salsa.

Currently Playing:

I'm in an PbP Rifts:Phaseworld game at Explorers Unlimited.

I also play a fair amount of Pathfinder Society, which is the Pathfinder living campaign. I enjoy that a good bit, though you do level up a bit fast for my taste (3 modules per level, always, retire at 12th).

I was in a Pathfinder game at a buddie's house in my neighborhood where we were all running Gestalt characters, but we lost too many players and it currently is on hiatus. It would be nice if that got going again.

Currently Running:
I run a weekly Pathfinder game running the Legacy of Fire adventure path, though we are in the last part of the last module, so that won't be much longer. I am thinking of running a bit of RIFTS after that for a change of pace (assuming my players like the idea, if not we can just do more Pathfinder. I an subscribed to the adventure paths so I have adventures sitting around to excess).

I also run a living campaign in this area called Serial Pulp Adventures. It's based on the Spycraft system with a fair amount of modification and custom classes. It generally only runs at the local gaming cons.

Owned: That's a pretty large pile of stuff to describe since I've been gaming since 78 or so.

Too many alts to list.

Currently playing: Something that I have a lot of mixed feelings about; a homebrew Storyteller system set in of all things The Land as featured in the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. My GM is a diehard fan of the novels but thinks he'd like to see what other people than Covenant could do in the same setting. The problem so far is that he's telling the story pretty much verbatim, making us feel pretty redundant. Time will tell.

Currently Running: A Battlestar Galactica game (albeit with a background that's been altered to just put some doubts in the minds of the players) using the Decipher Games Star Trek system, and a Doctor Who game using the RPG of the same name. It's on hiatus 'between systems' and I have high hopes for it yet.

Owned: Wow...let me try....Marvel Super Heroes, Aberrant, DC Roleplaying Game (West End and Mayfair), Star Wars (West End and WotC), Judge Dredd (Games Workshop and WotC), Lord of the Rings, Conan, Battlestar Galactica, D&D 3.5/4.0....and others.

Currently playing: Fading Suns, beginning next week. A friend once described the game as "Vampire: The Dark Ages in the future - with no vampires."

Owned: (looks over at two full bookshelves) Um, lets just mention the ones I've played most often shall we?
Champions (Hero Games)
Shadowrun (FASA)
Star Trek (FASA)

Currently playing: 4e, but I'm not a fan. Has been a good intro to DMing for one of my friends though. We've also toyed with making a CoH version of 4e, but it hasn't gotten very far... just an intro ruleset and a couple of encounters.

Currently running: Pathfinder (and 3.5 Paizo adventures prior to that).

Also own: Too many to list. :P Most recently though, I picked up the Dresden Files RPG.

I'm also a fan of those books. I can't imagine trying to "gamize" the novels though. A lot of what happened was dictated by the very nature of the protagonist. Then there's the whole question of the ring... best of luck to your GM and your group.

Currently Playing:
4th Edition DnD, Living Forgotten Realms. I have two characters getting close to Paragon tier, a Wizard and a Swordmage. I generally play once or twice a month, but there are periods when there are no higher tier adventures to play in.

Hollow Earth Expedition: A friend has been running a solo/GM character game for me with this. We thoroughly enjoyed the game when we got to play it at Origins last year, and this was a good way to keep this going.

Pathfinder: I have two characters in Pathfinder Society play, an 8th level ranseur wielding fighter and a 2nd level monk. Play is all online via TTopRPG and Skype. Will eventually be playing in the Serpent's Skull module.

Currently Running:
4th Edition DnD, Living Forgotten Realms. As we don't (or at least didn't) have nearly the GM's to cover the number of people who wanted to play. I kind of burned myself out, and now only GM it once a month or so.

Scion: Similar vein with Hollow Earth, I run this for my friend who runs that for me. Mostly with horrible understanding of the rules, since I'd only played the game once and had no other experience with any White Wolf products.

I'd love to play other games, but it seems like in my area there isn't a whole lot of interest in anything other than DnD.

I'm guessing that it was more than 10 Gs that was acting on your character? There must have been higher lateral forces or something right?

I mean, yes, if you weren't strapped in and weren't expecting it, 10 g would be mean broken bones and probably death but, under the right circumstances, a person can sustain more and live to tell about it. I mean John Stapp survived a peak of 47 g with a full 1.1 seconds at slightly more than 25 g--he lived to 89 but did have damage to his vision from this test. (Scary!)

But I don't want to derail the thread into human tolerances of acceleration.

I used to play D&D first edition (with a little second edition) way back when (not THAT way back, they just preferred many of the old rules, it was actually right around when 3rd edition came out). But the only place locally I know where I could game has two cats (I think the guy lives in the other half of his store) whose smell override any desire I would have to play there.

Though I had wanted for a long while to run my own game using mostly D&D rules with variations of races from the Breath of Fire universe.

Yes, it was the lateral acceleration that did it. Unbreakable hyper-carbon tether was only about 50 meters long. I forget the numbers, but I think it calculated out to some hundreds of Gs of centripetal acceleration.

I have a bit of a legal question and this seems to be the best spot to ask.

As I mentioned earlier, I am reading DC Adventures (which is a bit frustrating... I feel that there is a decent game in there, but the book is just poorly written) and also flipping through my old Marvel rpg again. Given that the White Wolf Storyteller system is one of my favourite systems, I am curious about Aberrant. Given that the game is no longer in print, is it legal to download a PDF of it? I would happily buy it if it were available, but since it is not being sold anymore, I am wondering about the legality of obtaining it online.

Thoughts?

i have the D&D4E set but haven't played it.

Currently playing in a 2nd Edition D&D campaign with rules tweaks.

Own and have played lots of different games, but CthulhuTech is the most recent addition to the collection. i am tempted by Eclipse Phase as well.

Favorite past campaigns have been in the Cyberpunk 2020, Champions, Changeling, Battletech, AD&D, Call of Chtulhu, Mekton, and Villains & Vigilantes settings. Always willing to try new games.

While i've designed many settings, campaigns, NPCs, factions, gear/mecha and mods for various game systems it's usually been for someone else to GM. i will happily supply intricately designed groups, critters, and weapons that the GM then uses to kill off my characters along with the rest of the party. (i might have designed that monstrosity, but my character knows nothing about it. ) i've also supplied props and played NPCs in a bunch of assorted LARPs even though i usually haven't gotten very involved in them. (Mostly WoD Changeling and Cyberpunk/scifi/steampunk games.)

Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...

Thanks. I think the GM is more enamored of the idea of the setting more than anything else, given that we as players barely got questioned about our backgrounds, and it's clear that Covenant's background is key.

Nope. Just because something isn't in print doesn't mean that the copyright is up. Copyrights in America at least don't expire until 75 YEARS after the death of the original creator. So, eBay is your friend. Buy it used.

DC Adventures (got that 2 days ago)
Shadowrun (1E, 2E and 3E)

... and probably a few more that I can't remember, but my wife asked me to not bother trying to think of all of them.

I've played Twilight 2000 and Marvel Superheroes, but don't own them.

For AD&D 1E, 2E, 3E and 3.5E, I own (I believe), every single general rulebook and all of the Forgotten Realms setting material (not including adventures), and a smattering of stuff from other settings.

I cut my RPing teeth on the old red box in the mid 1980's, and haven't looked back since.

More recently, I ran a successful online Mutants & Masterminds game over IRC that only floundered because I struggled with management as GM (but I learned A LOT doing it). I fully intend to pick that up again, using the 3E rules.

I prefer crunchy. To me the worth of a rules system is how flexible and extensible it is to model something--yep, I'm GURPS or Hero geek.

I wonder how many of you out there take a decent background burdened with a bad rules system and attempt to port it over to a decent rules system? Time consuming I know.
