Discussion: Animal Pack In Game Giveaway!

The in-game parties were a joke.

I have *never* complained about an in-game event before, but this one was just unfair.

It was bad enough that the OP read like a costume contest, which was random...that kinda upset a few people who had worked hard on costumes for this "party."

What I found unfair was this:

Freedom had 5 instances of D. Every instance was visisted, I think between all 5 instances there were 12(?) codes handed out.

Several other servers had two instances of D, sometimes three. Most of the servers got the 2nd and 3rd instance visited and codes given out. Victory, Guardian, Triumph, and Protector did not. Everyone in D2 on those servers was told tough luck.

About to log into the one on Virtue, and I bet every instance is hit and every instance has codes fgiven away within it.

I understand that things were very busy and what not, but maybe you should have put some clear rules in place. If you're going to go to every instance of D on three or four servers, then you should make it the same rule for them all, not leave D2 on 4 different servers just hanging. I think it should have been first instance only for all servers, or every instance for all servers.

This is truly the first time I can say that this sort of thing just didn't feel good or right; it felt very unfair.

The dilemma: Based on population of all the servers, even showing up *twenty* minutes early relegated my characters to instance 2, 3, or 4. I'm *certain* I speak for others who don't have the luxury of camping out on City Of all day that this is not very equitable or accessible to the bulk of the player-base.

While it is true, it rewards the most obsessed/dedicated/work-at-home/game-at-work types for having access, it also *punishes* individuals who weren't so lucky to have that option.

This will probably lead to feelings of ill-will--I don't have them, I was lucky enough to get into a couple of instances where the packs were being handed out--but what about the person just getting home now, attempting to log into Virtue... and they're in PD5?

This sort of approach will probably be reviewed for effect after the event, one can only hope the lessons learned from it will be applied to future such events.

That all being said, thank you for your time on this, it must be very hard to do all of this work.

Well we made a party of sorts outa it on Pocket D 2 Victory. Mister Whiskers was passing out treats for cool beastly-threads if yah didn't click "no" to trade.

Not a big pack (numbers wise)... But a Pack is a Pack! Animal pack that is.

I was in PD5 on Freedom.

They gave out 9 codes on Freedom.

3 each In PD1-3. 1 in PD4. And A SoL folks in PD5.

Corrected: Virtue got 1 per PD, and Triumph got 3.

Untrue. Justice got 5. Avatea even said "The people in D2 sweet talked me into giving out the first 3 codes there." D2 got 3 codes and D1 got 2. A couple other servers also got multiple codes. It should have been the same for all servers, not special treatment for a select few.

This whole event left a bad taste in my mouth. A first For CoH. Been here since just before I6, and this is the first time I have ever been truly disappointed.

.... and I managed to completely forget when Protector's giveaway was, so I sauntered in nearly an hour after everyone had left. Yay.

Yeah, Virtue had 6 PD's running and they gave out 3.

What a load of BS.

Awe I just found out on Victory Badges global that they did pass out titles in PD 1... whilst I was jolted automaticaly to 2. Man I don't suppose there's any hope the character Mister Whiskers could be retro-rewarded that? Is there? (Makes an adorable cute face, big green kitty eyes look up to Avetea and Beastly.) sigh...

That's just not right that they discriminated against some servers. My home is Guardian, and I couldn't get into PD1 because it was full. Now don't tell me those were all people who focus exclusively on Guardian, because I could tell from the dialog in pd2 that many, many frequent virtue and Freedom. By the devs not coming to pd2 on what they call the "lower population servers", even though last time I'd heard Guardian was the third highest populated, and this info could be erroneous, just shows no respect to those players who pay every month like everyone on the higher population servers do. I realize it's just a contest, or a give away, but that is hardly fair at all.

I was going to make a big, long post to defend why I think the Devs did some of the things they did, but... my Spider Sense started to tingle. So, I'll leave that for them to do on their own.

gotta say...I organized and created my safari getup earlier this week. was standing with a group of safari people and we thought it would be more like a costume contest as well...

needless to say, codes were given out, and I think 1 or 2 of them were given to people who weren't even in any special costume.

It also seemed unfair that people from other servers were making new characters in hopes of getting the code on the other server's alotted times.

Well... gotta say I'm disappointed. And I'm saying this constructively, not to be whiny complaining. Not that I'm saying anyone else has been, since I didn't bother to read anything else in this thread.

But I want to be heard here.

I'm not disappointed that I didn't win one of the codes for the animal pack. I was planning to buy it anyway, and honestly, had forgotten about the give away until right about time for it. But when I do log on, and there are seven instances of Pocket D, and six of them are full, that makes it impossible for me to even get a chance at winning a code. Sure, I could have logged on the second I got home from work, and waited around, and hoped for the best, but what about the other fifty people in instance 7, or the fifty people in 6, or 5, or however many there were that didn't even get a chance at the code because they were given away in the first two or three instances? My beast costume may not have won(I was a yellow chicken doing /em chicken over and over) but maybe mine was better than someone who got a code in one of the lower instances. But to not even get a chance to find out is what's disappointing.

Also... I felt bad for Avatea. She was the one giving out the codes, and then the bad news on Virtue. Most people seemed to be ok with the bad news, but there were a few people who were not grateful for the gold titles. It's not her fault that the free codes were in short supply, but she had the unfortunate job of telling people that they showed up for nothing.

Hopefully in the future there will be better planning, and more codes. Like checking out how many instances there are of the meeting zone, and divide the number of available codes evenly over them.

I can handle not winning, but not even getting the chance to compete...

I gotta say I have been around since launch and been to a lot of in game events and by far this has to be the worst one ever. It didn't seem like they planned for anything and just randomly did whatever. Some instances got more codes than others while some instances got NOTHING...um WTF?

I made it to Pinnacle D #2 and Justice D #1. Pinnacle didn't get hit at all, and Justice D #1 got hit after D #2, and while Justice D #2 got 3 codes, Justice D #1 only got 2 codes.

Come join in the fun and show us your inner (and outer) Party Animal!
Yeah.
Very disorganized.
I do have characters on every server already -
15 on Champion
14 on Freedom
13 on Guardian
14 on Infinity
16 on Justice
13 on Liberty
12 on Pinnacle
13 on Protector
12 on Triumph
12 on Victory
15 on Virtue

I don't even game on Freedom any more, so I didn't go there.
I did visit the other servers. I was in PD 1 in maybe one server where 2 codes were handed out in the full pd1 and one in a partially filled PD 2 on the same server.
After that it was all PD2 or greater for me. I may have even been marked with a name so I was out of selection for a code on the other servers at any rate.

I do feel it was not good to go to only the PD 1 in any server. It was a joke to yell, come to the Pocket D! when you can't get into one, only hav the choice of 2 and no one say anything about you wasting your time being there.

Don't the DEVs watch the [Help] Channel? Come on! They'd rather answer private messages instead of making rules clear on the Admin or Help channels?

Just a little inteligence goes a long way.
By now, most of you know, I don't care about rubbing the DEVs the wrong way.
I'll buy this pack but, that's beside the point.

It's not just the treatment of my characters, but a treatment of all the players that couldn't get into a PD1 instance.

The rules seem clear. Be on that Day and be in the Pocket D - Not "you must be in Pocket D 1" on certain servers but not other and, hey, we'll arbitrarily give out more codes on some servers, especially if they suck up properly..I mean beg and grovel before the true gloriostiy of the brilliant shining coolness of the undenyingly superior ones know and DEVs that would give us something for free that we would have to pay for otherwise (monthly subscription fee).

If they are going to ignore the costumes anyway, they could just as easily take a random pick of ALL they players on ALL the pocket d instances that aren't on HIDE. Come on, give a warning to get into the D. Take a capture of all the characters names there, pick for the give away, write the global name down on a list so no repeats on other servers, give away the codes, and announce winners on the ADMIN channel.

Really, that doesn't seem hard to me, but maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way.

Often times I've been told on these servers that I'm crazy and I make no sense.

Of course, I'm not trying to stick my nose up a DEVs ...
...so there was no expecting me to get a code anyway or for the contest really to have any kind of relation to the skill of costume make for animals - You know, like Animals, Mineral, and vegetables. Not all Animals have fur, and even humans are animals. Insects are animals. So probably really only my plant characters or living stone creatures couldn't really show up and be legit as Animals.

Well, wrap it up.
I love this game.
Once again sloppy performance by the DEVs. It must be overwhelming. Maybe a practice run on the Test server to work out the kinks and figure out a way of resolving issues for the next time. Forethought.
I do really like the animal pack.
I had a fun time hanging out with the animals and checking out the different animal costumes on the different servers in the instances of Pocket D that I was able to get into.
I even had fun /e protesting the DEVs for not showing up in the Pocket D 2 and completely dis'ing on the players there.

I need my
/emote pitchfork
for the next protest. I already have
/emote protest
and
/emote holdtorch

angry villagers always need pitchforks!

I am going to buy the booster pack since I didn't get a code and I can deal with not winning but I had a real hard time with the way that the event was handled.

I showed up at PD2 at 1pm pst because PD1 was already full. I thought we were going to be asked to line up along the walls to do a CC since the original announcement said

Quote:
Come dressed in your wildest fit-for-the-jungle / safari-fabulous outfit and who knows, you may leave with an Animal Pack code on the spot!
Instead the dev simply asks us for a number between 1-20. lets think about that for a sec, how many can a PD instance hold? 50? how many multiple correct answers do you think could have been provided? and to make matters worse 2 of the winners did NOT have an animal theme in any shape or form. This just totally put a sour taste in my mouth over the whole event. they made it sound like having the best animal themed costume was both the point to the event and the key to winning.

Also even though it wasn't worded properly it was implied that we would have a 1 in 10 chance to get a code, not a 1 in 3 chance and don't give me that lame excuse that you ran out of codes, you guys have access to ALL the codes or at least a way to grant them.

I thought I had a pretty good shot at winning a code since I was the only eagle toon there (which I have gotten many random compliments on) and aside from two penguin toons I was the only bird toon. but to toss my costume creative efforts out the window over a random toss out trivialized the entire event and makes me not want to participate in future similar events, what a joke.

I just got back home and my wife told me about how it all went tonight.
The thing is, a lot of people showed up for this.

I was on before the first event on Freedom... And PD2 was packed 30 minutes prior.

Honestly, I think it may be because the Animal Pack is quite popular.

Anyway... here's the thing...
They can't just give out an unlimited amount of freebies (I mean, they could, but the company is going to have a limit, hehe).

So, they can either scramble to do the best they can with what they have or simply not do giveaways.
I think it is really cool that they do give away things that they deem worthy to sell.

It'd be lovely if these packs were just part of regular updates... but they're not and that's long been established now.

So... was everything "fair"? Probably not. What can they do? It's enough that they gave out some.

And no, my wife did not get any, I didn't get any... so, that's not why I'm defending them or anything.

I know these things can be frustrating.
Honestly, it's not worth the $10 to get aggravated. It's been a bad week for us and we figured.. eh, may as well try, since they're giving them out.

No luck! No big deal.
They did what they could do.

I also thought it was a costume contest, but it wasn't actually worded that way.
And yeah... they would have been there well past midnight if they'd run it as a contest.
So... c'est la vie!

Everyone try and go back to having fun.

I think they did not anticipate the sheer num,ber of folks that would turn out for the animal pack. The party pack didn't do nearly so well, and for years the devs were stating the party line that they weren't going support turning this into City of Furries.

So now they know just HOW interested players are in the animal pack. As a give-away, it was a victim of poor planning; true. But as a marketing ploy, I think it demonstrated that we the players WANT these kind of boosters. And to me, this makes our efforts to attend a worthwhile endeavor.

Want to make it random? Hold a lottery.

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

Well I for one would like to thank Avatea and Beastyle for taking the time to organize the event. The OCR team doesn't have to do these type of things, nor do they have to give away booster codes to players. I would imagine that NCsoft would actually prefer that Paragon Studios stop the give-away contests altogether....

You're right, they don't have to do it. But when you're not even given the chance to win because they gave away all the prizes before getting to the room you're waiting in, you might feel disappointed, and want to make sure that your voice is heard. It's a matter of fairness. When they say you get the chance at winning something for free, and then you don't get the chance... you see where I'm going with this?

We're glad they do these things, but this particular one wasn't handled to our expectations proven by previous giveaways. Yes, they could have decided to not give away the booster pack, hell, if they gave away 100 packs over all the servers, that's a profit loss of $1000. So it's appreciated, it just needs to be done better.
