Thank you for everything that you've done. I remember how much better I felt about the future of AT and Powerset balance when you took over the reins, and though obviously it's not (and never really could be) perfect, the difference you made in the past several years was huge. I remember the state of Fiery Aura when Healing Flames only healed around 17% due to a broken AT modifier. I remember AVs being immune to Gauntlet and Taunt auras. I remember how much less effective Dominators and Stalkers were than other ATs, and how Invulnerability seemed out of date after Willpower came out. I remember Energy Aura and Electric Armor being really, really terrible defensive sets compared to the others. I remember that you fixed all of them, and more.

Nobody is going to agree with every decision you made, but I sure appreciated the vast majority of them. Good luck with your future employment, and know that not every player has hostile feelings towards you.
The things Liquid points out (which are only a moderate subset!) highlight the quality of work and forum interaction we came to rely on (and were probably spoiled by, compared to other games). I sincerely hope that your successors will strive towards the standards you kept (in general, not so much recently when, as others have pointed out, the DevDigest has become a graveyard).

We never really talked much, but I've always thought you were generally trying to do the best you could to make the game succeed. Hope you can still have a wonderful christmas and new years despite this. I'm sure what you go on to next will be thankful to have you.

Best of luck.

Castle,

I just saw your LinkedIn profile, looking at past projects you've worked on.

I'm going to be watching intently, because you did a great job here. Future projects will likely follow this trend.

Well, great job, PVP aside.

There, I said it

Well done.
I have a 50 in every AT, but Scrappers and Dominators are my favorites.

I know this is going to fall on deaf ears, it always does, but... Keep in touch, ya know?

I get so tired of people we've known and grown fond of just disappearing off the face of the earth after they're gone. If you're let go, I can understand that, as I've been laid off and bitter before. But others, they seem to have left of their own volition, which is apparently the case here.

Some of them have said what has essentially amounted to, "I'll still be around." CuppaJo even posted a message or two after she was gone, but she was the only one.

I can understand that they don't want former rednames posting as rednames and confusing people, or *gasp!* someone who used to be a redname doing something to the detriment of the game because they were bitter and the company just didn't know it. And I get it, I really do, that once you're gone, you don't want to answer questions about the game or have to send out a continual stream of, "I don't work there any more, please contact so-en-so." Yes, I know that there may be one or two former rednames still playing the game in relative anonymity.

Still, it's just such a harsh thing, to go from, "I'm part of your gaming lives!" to complete abject silence.

So seriously, talk to Empulse (is he still here?) and tell him to make you a... um... whitename? and stick around. I'd love to team up with you sometime even if you don't have godly dev powers to spawn--or instantly kill!--Hamidon. Set up an "I don't work there any more, please contact so-en-so" keybind. We know what you're like a dev, some of us are genuinely curious what you're like as just a regular schmo like us.

Thank you for everything you've done with City of in the last 5 years. CoV, Willpower, Shield Defense, Dual Pistols, proliferation, even the attempt at PvP rebalance. Everything. The game probably won't be the same without your insight into the math behind it all. I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors.

P.S. Thank you for never adding Heal aggro to the game. The lack of such a thing is one of the reasons I love City of...

Good luck, Castle, on your future in the gaming industry. Your dedication to this little corner of the universe is appreciated more than you know. I trust that you leave the Powers division in good hands.

Take a well-deserved vacation, and here's to what you've got coming next.

Tony -- company policy is that once someone is no longer with the company, their "red name" status is revoked. Come Friday afternoon, I won't even have access to this account any longer.

I do still have my personal account, and will continue to play. I'll still be in a Supergroup (and who knows, maybe I'll actually get to play when the rest of them are online now! Silly mid-westerners!) Most of all, I'll still be reading the forums, but, when I post, very few people will know it's me. Sadly, there's little that could be done to change that.

There were a lot of misconceptions about how Taunt worked until he and Ghost Widow took the time to discover it and he explained it to us, for example.
To be fair, before he and Ghost Widow dug into it, THEY had a lot of misconceptions as to how it worked.

I understand, don't go breaking company policy. And I even understand why such a policy exists. Still, I do wish some community managers (*poke, poke...) would run up the flagpole providing the ability for redname accounts to be converted over to normal accounts, and updating the policy so that instead of, "You can't play under your NCsoft name," it would say something like, "You won't represent yourself as an NCsoft employee, and agree that if someone contacts you in that capacity, you will forward them to [contact name or address]."

I know you have no control over that, just hoping that someone else may see it.

I’ve been working on City of Heroes in essentially the same role for six years now. It has been a fantastic learning experience and I have become a far better designer as a result of my time here.

I’d especially like to thank all of you City of Heroes fans. I appreciate the passion that you feel for your hobby, even when that passion was, shall we say, directed towards me in a rather negative fashion? I have always tried to keep an open mind and treat your feedback fairly. I’ve loved seeing what you have done with the tools we have provided you with. Some of the MA arcs I’ve seen are brilliant and some of the base layouts are simply amazing. I’ve seen costumes made that, quite frankly, are completely beyond my ability despite having access to the exact same tools. Then, there are the wonderful people I’ve met at Hero-Con and Meet & Greets. It has definitely been my pleasure to work with this community.

In closing, I’d like to thank you all for the good times and putting up with my sometimes surly nature. Going forward, Synapse and Black Scorpion are the ‘go to’ guys whenever you have a powers or entity related question or problem. Feel free to direct your inquiries to them here on the boards and they will do their best to address them. I’ll have PM’s turned on as Castle until 12:00 Pacific, Friday, December 24. Feel free to PM me or post here – I’ll try and answer or comment as best I can!
You will be greatly missed around these parts, Castle. Good luck to you on your endeavors and have a wonderful holiday.

Castle will be missed. From what I recall, he was first a player that eventually became a developer and remained a player throughout (and sounds like will continue after moving on).

Even good developers have to move on, and should, for their own careers, for new opportunities, for a change of pace. And that's generally a good thing for the game, particularly if they're training their proteges for a smooth transition. At some point even the best intentioned devs would probably slow progress into the future, new blood is useful.

Take care Castle in whatever you do in the coming years.
