The "What are you Reading" thread part deux

For some reason, I've been reading about undead lately. Last month, I read "Monster Hunter Vendetta" by Larry Correia which picked up immediately from where "Monster Hunter International" left off. I followed that up with "Soulless" by Gail Carriger, the first of her The Parasol Protectorate series. And right now, I'm reading "The Zombie Combat Manual: A Guide to Fighting the Living Dead" by Roger Ma.

So, I'm going full circle. From 'you can't put enough silver lined bullets into the undead and supernaturals', to 'they're ok when integrated into polite society', and back to 'smash and bash 'em'.

Recently I finished Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy... excellent philosophical fantasy series.

Currently I'm reading Flashfoward, the book the ill-fated ABC series was based on. The story is interesting, but I can see how they had to punch it up to make a TV show out of it.

Next up is the 2010 Hugo-winning The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi. Sounds like an interesting take on a dystopian future.

I have finished "The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" by Stieg Larson. Compared to the first two, it does feel somewhat like a novel length denounment, but for some reason Larson makes the intracasies of Swedish Constitutional law fascinating.

"A Journey: My Political Life" by Tony Blair. Though utterly boring in some parts, the man has that dry British wit that made me laugh outloud. I learned quite a bit about British Government and other such things.

"Happy Ever After" By Nora Roberts. Book 4 of her bride quartet, I found it weaker than the previous books, with books 1 "Vision in White" and 3 "Savor the Moment" being the best of the lot.

"The Mark of Nerath" by Bill Slavicsek. A story of Human Cleric set in Dungeon & Dragon's new core setting it wasn't bad as stories set in the generic points of light setting get.

"Waiting for Barbarians" by E. M. Coetzee. A fascinating story about imperialism, torture, and humanity.

I only read the first three Demon Princes novels. I was struck by the character's unlimited morality license - In the first book, he tortured and killed a man just to get the names of the Demon Princes, but by the third book, the Demon Princes were being discussed in an academic treatise in the chapter headers!

I'll get to the other two someday.

I bought Monster Hunter International on a recent bookstore pillage. Which reminds me, I also just read Dead City by Joe McKinney which is an account of a beat cop surviving an outbreak of zombies. It was decent enough but it had a preview of the follow-on book Apocalypse of the Dead which was brutally awesome, so I snagged that one, too.

Just finished reading Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan, book 13 of the Wheel of Time. Well, just finished a month or so ago as I read it in two days. Decent book with plenty of stuff going on. Not the best in the series, but a decent read for those still following the series.

Also just read Serenity: A Shepherd's Tale. Good, not great, but nice to find out a little more about Shepherd Book.

Star Trek Enterprise: Kobayashi Maru. After that, not sure. Probably going to start on that TOR novel, Fatal Alliance, to get ready for the game. Then go back to Beneath the Raptor's Wing if I can actually find a "regular" paperback version of it (as opposed to the larger PB version I keep seeing everywhere).

Hurrah for Kindle on my Android. I'm currently rereading Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson on the bus thanks to it (his other books don't seem to be on it sadly).

I believe Lovecraft will have to be next.

Snow Crash is the only Stephenson book on Kindle? That's a crime! I'd at least expect Diamond Age, The Baroque Cycle, and Anathem to be on there.

Erm, yes and no. I just re-searched and sure enough Snow Crash was the only one to pop up. But when I clicked the back button I got Anathem, The Baroque Cycle and Cryptonomicon listed as well.

Aaah, I see. They're region locked and Snow Crash is the only one available in Europe for some reason (boo)

I'm re-reading George R. R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series, currently on A Storm of Swords, book 3 of 4 currently available. I will typically read through a good book once for the story (gotta find out what's gonna happen!), and then if I liked it, I'll re-read it for the details a little while later.

With the HBO series of A Game of Thrones coming up in the spring, it is interesting to re-read the series keeping an eye out for the cinematic aspects of the story.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Is that the Original Series novel Kobayashi Maru, or an Enterprise one?

I loved the Original series one... and I think it would have significantly improved the new Star Trek movie if they had adapted that particular telling of Kirk's test.

If that isn't a crime it should be!

Black mark against kindle.

I'm currently reading the Space Wolf series by William King. They're based on Warhammer 40K. A good read and they are written well enough that even people who know nothing about 40K can read and enjoy them.

I recently finished the War of the Dwarve by Markus Heitz. I liked it but it wasn't as good as the previous book, the Dwarves.

The Enterprise one. So far it's not bad, but I haven't gotten too far into it.

I just muscled my way through Stieg Larsson's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"

It pissed me off in such a way as to nearly turn me off of reading for a while... on several occasions... It was good in places, which only served to make it all the more irritating when it wasn't. Started off slow, got slower, irritated me, got really good, irritated me again, and then got good again, and then got boring again, and ended up with pissing me off again...

I really really hated this book, and there's absolutely no way I'll be reading the rest of the series... unless he writes one called "The Girl Who Died in a Fire" because then I'd know there's a happy ending.

I hate everyone who recommended this book to me, too.

Finishing up the book "The Fires of Heaven" from the "Wheel of Time Series". This is my first run through of the books. So far I can say I enjoy the books, but I prefer "A Song of Ice and Fire" as a series.

In my opinion, you've already read the best of the series, and it's only downhill from there. Of course, I have not read The Path of Daggers or anything that follows.

No, you're right about that. It descends into hopeless meandering and a complete loss of direction after that basically.
