Honoree mission Awful
There are perfectly acceptable builds that have--and will continue to have--issues with those EBs. The question I ask is: why are those mobs there? Nothing else in the arc presents that sort of issue. They stick out like a sore thumb.
If the "challenge" level were consistent throughout the arc, that'd be a different story. But it's not. The rest of the arc is pretty much standard fare. A little bit too standard, if you ask me.
I mean, Council are a "challenge"? Seriously?
Just because it didn't immediately roll over like 99% of the rest of the content in the game doesn't make it cheap. |
I mean, hey, if you're doing it with an SOed Emp/Rad or whatever, how "challenging" can it be, really?
2. The whole arc can most certainly be "rolled over like 99% of the game", because it's just like "99% of the game." That's one of my criticisms about it. As far as I can see, there is one scenario in one mission that is the possible exception for some builds/players. That's an inconsistency that doesn't look "challenging" to me, it just looks lazy.
3. The mission in question has what I'd call a serious design flaw that will hose people just because of the system they're using.
I understand that there are super-uber-players that can complete this mission with training enhancements and Boxing. Good for them, congratulations, we're all very impressed.
However, it's irrelevant, because I don't think those of us who know the game inside and out are the measure by which this, or any, content should be weighed.

Face it, many folks preferred heroside and went there. Keep in mind many villains also went rogue. |
To the OP, if you can't solo it then try to find a team. I play on red side and there were plenty of people doing the arc last night.

But in any event, it shouldn't see any changes to make it even slightly easier or as you would call it "less cheap." It's doable by any build with SOs. If the determinant beyond that is skill, then there is no problem.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.
And see the room is now wall to wall bloody rikti. And ok here yes I'll admit another mistake, I underestimated the amount of mobs actually in the room, and though a call to arms + aim + lrm would clear it out. Oh how wrong I was, got insta held again (through 3 purples) popped my break free, didn't matter as i started getting mobbed to death by the rikt |
Then am promptly one shotted by an ELEVEN HUNDRED damage total focus through three purples. |
That mission isn't hard, it's a flat out cheap zergfest both EB's do cheat beyond belief, and frankly if I as a squishy fan wanted to be forced to team to take on a mission that melee players or certain build do with ease, |
Oh, they wouldn't? Then maybe the "Certain builds" bit is utter BS. And I'm certainly not a godlike player.
I'll come back here later tonight or tomorrow and post how I did on my Dark Miasmas. I hate fighting Rikti on them, because of all the stuns and Psi-attack-only holds. The Mesmerist LTs have Fear protection, and the Guardians's AccMet slashes the duration on my holds. I'm still planning to go in on +2/x4. Honestly, I expect the Rikti to take longer than the EBs.

Plus, honestly, if you have issues with this (OK, I'll give maybe the first time not getting an idea what to do - but even then, they're just not that rough,) how are you going to deal with future Incarnate content, which I'm guessing *will* be tougher because they'll expect you to have a filled Alpha slot (and later?)
I think I'm going to have to waterproof my computer given the reaction we'll probably see.
If your attempt doesn't work the first time (past RNG bad-luck,) then try tackling the problem a different way. There's no "verboten build" with this. The only builds I see that would have problems with this would be (a) the "Pure h34lz0r" with one whole attack, probably not slotted, (b) perhaps the petless mastermind, (c) some concept builds (all pool powers, for instance.)
You don't need an "IO'd out," multi-billion-INF build. You don't need to "have played the game for years, unlike the newbies." You don't need to be "melee only," you don't even need to be high damage. Just pay the slightest amount of attention to what's going on.
Well, I had a whole big response to this typed out, but then I tried to preview my post and got logged out by the stupid forum software. That said, I agree with Hydrophidian that the arc as a whole is pretty meh. Not horrible, but a bit less epic and... interesting than I'd hope for. As for Honoree, it's probably not the greatest idea to have an EB punching for 1100 damage (that's not so much 'challenge' as it is 'fake difficulty',) but I also don't think it makes him insurmountable for anybody. I pretty much just used Standard EB Operating Procedure* against him and he wasn't much more annoying than a regular EB. And this was on an Earth/ Dominator, so about the only thing I had going in my favor was good damage output. I might try him tonight on my pretty-much-IO-less Rad/Rad Defender tonight... without using her primary. That should be a pretty good test.
*Standard EB Operating Procedure
(Note that while this works on every character I've ever tried it on, which covers almost every possibility, I dunno how it works for Controllers without a ST immob, since PToD can interfere with their damage-dealing capabilities. Fortunately, nor do I care about Controllers.)
Since I still regularly see people referring to EBs in general like they're this big invincible obstacle, here's a guide to soloing 90% of the EBs in the game on pretty much any character.
- Fill your tray 2/3 of the way with purple inspirations. Top it off with a mix of greens and reds.
- Get the EB alone.
- Softcap yourself with purples. If you have no defense, just eat four of them and call it a day. Eat all of the reds.
- Wail on the EB.
- If you get hit, eat greens. When the purples start flickering (keep an eye on this,) eat some more.
- If you die, stock your tray back up and return. Chances are, you won't die.
And that's pretty much all it takes. Will they get a lucky shot now and then and kill you? Yeah. But unless you get really unlucky, the vast majority of them will just whiff at you impotently. Very, very rarely do I get killed doing this, and I mostly play squishies. Hell, it worked for me on IOless pre-buff /Energy Dominators, where almost my entire primary (and the secondary effects of my Assault pool) was neutered by PToD and my damage was subpar.
The EBs this tactic doesn't work as well against include those with heavy debuffs, especially -defense, like Silver Mantis, and those who summon lots and lots of pets, like Lord Recluse. For these guys, you might want a Shivan or a team, but I usually find that perseverance or just changing your insp load (I found a tray of oranges to work against Silver Mantis) to usually do the trick.
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
This mission gives you access to the power level of the games signature hero and villain. |
Yah. That'll happen. NOT!
It's quite literally a path to godhood. It should be harder. |
And I think you're VASTLY over-estimating what we'll get out of these slots.
I mean, you're talking about effectively a whole new game being built atop this one.
I really doubt we're headed that way.
It should require you to do every mission instead of being able to auto-complete. |
You would've made it that way. Honestly, I would've made it that way. But it's not that way, and there's a reason for that.
We are not the measure.
But in any event, it shouldn't see any changes to make it even slightly easier or as you would call it "less cheap." |
I've not stated that it should be made easier, slightly or otherwise.
I've stated that I didn't find it particularly challenging, and the one part of it that could be called "difficult" was 1. easily dealt with by taking standard steps, 2. was an uninspired stunt we've seen 100 times before. I.E.: cheap.
So:
If it was supposed to be just an introductory arc, very personal, warning you of what's to come... soloable by anyone not in a coma... that's what it should've been.
If it was supposed to be an EXTREME CHALLENGE that curled the shorthairs of even the most grizzled 6 yr. vet... that's what it should've been.
As it stands now, it is neither. Maybe it's trying to be both, and failing. Or maybe it was just a slapdash job, thrown together at the last minute. I think that's more likely, actually.
In any case, I don't think it measures up. It does not *sell* the system at all.
It's just... there.
Which I think is bad, as this system is supposed to be all that and a bag of chips for the foreseeable future. Let's face it. A lot of players just aren't being engaged by this. That's a problem. And this arc... it ain't helping.
It's doable by any build with SOs. |

On my main (Mind/Psi Dominator), I charged into the room with Demonic and domination running, confused the second EB and all the Rikti, killed the second EB 3really easily while he was taking chunks out of Honoree (who wasted his heal, tee hee) then used stacks of 4 lucks at a time while wittling Honoree down. Took all of 4 minutes.
Not all of my alts would have been able to do that, but they'd still have won eventually. It's not that hard.
Funniest thing last night was the number of players who wanted to be an Incarnate but hadn't even unlocked the Midnight Club. Now *that's* lame.

I'll admit it; the first two characters I did the Honoree mish with, I got wiped and stomped but good.
Here's the difference though; I knew I had to change my strategies. Whatever I had done before didn't work in this respect for my Invul/SS Tank nor my Bots/Traps MM. As such, I did change tactics, and although it was a tough fight for both, I overcame, adapted and improvised. I made mistakes even during those last fights, but I learned and applied.
Nontheless to say, both characters got their alpha slot.
I can understand the OP's angst, and I truly felt ticked off getting two to four shotted by Honoree as well, but rather than blame the mish, I turned around and analyzed what I needed to do different; THIS unto itself is one of the reasons I like the direction this game is going. No more click-click-click on the powers tray and going "Leroy Jenkins" on the AV/EB/Portals; change tactics, weapons and/or method of attack as needed. Great input from the beta forums also helped me in devising a better tactic as well (thanks all you die-hard beta testers!).
Nontheless, I know some folks aren't into changing their ways or playstyle; for that, there is the 'autocomplete'. You have the option. Use whichever one you think will make your gameplay more to your enjoyment.

(In fact, this is so correct it should be made into a Guide. Probably CoH's shortest Guide, but a good one nonetheless.)

And I don't understand why some people are, on the one hand, lauding it as a challenge and then, on the other, talking about how easy it was for them to do and how anyone should be able to do it. Can't eat your cake and have it too. Unless it's magic cake, I guess. But it's not.
Anywho, I didn't find it a challenge and it's "difficulty", such as it was, was pedestrian.
how are you going to deal with future Incarnate content |
You don't need an "IO'd out," multi-billion-INF build. |
But the fact that a lot of people seem to think you do kinda speaks to the shoddy design of the arc, I'd say.
Lemme approach this from another way...
Mission 1: You're God.
Mission 2: Standard fare. Maybe -- maybe -- you get tripped up a bit by Trapdoor... but this "challenge" isn't particularly hard to figure out... and once you have his number, he's easy to smish.
Mission 3: Standard fare... until you reach the end of the map.
Now. With everything up to this point, combined with the contact's delivery, an expectation has been established. Up to this point, there has been nothing about this arc that suggests you're dealing with anything other than the usual.
Think that might have something to do with the problems some people are having with the arc? I kinda do.
But what bothers me more than the people who get stuck? Are the people who didn't get stuck, but came away thinking, 'that wasn't fun. I don't really want to repeat that with X number of 50s.'
That ain't good.
BUT... whatever. I've put my 2 cents in. This arc was a huge disappointment for me, and not for the reasons Geko seems to think. I believe it needs to be rethought... but I'm fairly certain it's not going to be.
I also think it'll probably be made easier. Which won't really help. Sure, it'll make the flow of it more consistent, but inconsistency is only one of the issues I see with this arc. Besides, there's merit to the argument that it shouldn't be particularly easy.
Ultimately, what's scaring me is that this whole Incarnate system looks to me like it's on the failboat to disaster town. I was really hoping this arc was going to change my tune on that. It didn't. It just reaffirmed it.
Thus ends my foray into these forums for another few months, at least.
Have fun out there!

I actually bum rush the the honeree and mobs with my plant/psi and had no issues.........
These elite bosses are business as usual. Characters with the "right" sets will blow them away (and probably come to the boards to post about how easy it was) and others will struggle. The only thing I noticed that was different was two of them lacked knockback protection.
I found the missions overall pretty good. But my god does the AV/elite boss system in this game need an overhaul. It's probably the worst feature in the game. I can't think of a video game I've played in the past 20 years with less fulfilling boss fights actually, which is too bad because the rest of the battles in CoH are pretty good. On a team, half the time the boss is dead before I even realize there's one there.
EDIT: The Trapdoor fight was actually pretty good. And I didn't mind the fight with the two elite bosses. The set up was all there, but the actual mechanics of fighting an elite boss are still a turn off.
That's exactly how it should be weighed. None of those crappy arguments that got the devs to make the respec trial, cape mission, et. al. easier work here. This mission gives you access to the power level of the games signature hero and villain. It's quite literally a path to godhood. It should be harder. It should require you to do every mission instead of being able to auto-complete.

"Hmm, how can we make this a challenge? Ah, yes; take all the fun out of it! That's a great plan!"
It's a game. A game people should enjoy playing. Not 'You are going to grind and suffer and like it.' Thats utter BS.
Hell, I wouldn't care if the Portals only spawned Rikti when the player was in range. Like, I dunno, EVERY other portal in game? Like the Behemoth ones.

YES, I know I dont have to kill all the damn things! Get this; its kinda hard to pull an EB when even ST hitting him draws the whole mob that hes STOOD IN THE MIDDLE OF as well! Thats not skill based! Its the game literally cheating. End of.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.
|
I tried this mission with my Kin/Energy Defender, and ended up autocompleting it just because I wanted to see the Incarnate content. But I think I could have managed it if I had known more and prepared properly. Without proper preparation you're doomed.
I snuck in with Invisibility. This caused all the portals to drop one Rikti, who stood there wondering what he was supposed to do. I found a safe position and began sniping the portals away, then dealing with the Rikti who would aggro from that. That tactic worked fine until the Vanguard guy spotted me and hit me with a stun grenade, then killed me.
I went back in and decided to pull the AVs. Started with Honoree. Didn't know what I was in for -- he ignored my Transference and Speed Drain, then slept, then stunned, then killed me.
I still think I could have handled this mission if I had known it was all about status effects. I would have loaded up on break frees and defense inspirations. (I had none -- that character typically carries a loadout of endurance and health, and I was depleted having just come from a Hami raid.) With the correct loadout of inspirations and slightly better tactics I think I would have managed.
So tonight I'll try again. I want my tank to get her incarnate slot, but I doubt she'll have a problem with this mission. I'll have to try one of my controllers and see how well they do. I'm sure a squishy can solo this mission. But it will take strategy and preparation. I'm fine with that.

Life is funny. Death is funnier. Mass slaughter can be hilarious.
For the record, I jumped between Ms. Vanguard and the Honoree on my Dark/Dark/Soul and won. Granted, I did so and purposely died to get Soul Transfer. After laying down a mag-30 stun they were cake. The thing to remember is that Dark/Dark/Soul benefits from having more enemies, so those portals were just fuel for me.

"Dark Armor is a complete waste as a tanking set."
BTW to those still struggling with Trapdoor, the trick I used to solo is to pull him, then run or jump to the bottom with your toes at the edge of the lava. Ideally, set it up so the catwalk blocks his ability to shoot you from the platform. He will jump down and try to shoot you from the lava. If you can, Immobilize him there. If not, a knockback (especially a ranged one) can keep him from trying to melee you. The lava will deplete his HP very quickly.
For the fight with the other AVs, I think you can make some of the ambushes appear ahead of time if you go to the end room BEFORE grabbing the glowie. Kill them, go back to the glowie, then go back to the room. If you have ranged attacks, you should be able to pull the first group of portals without aggroing the AVs. Then try to pull each AV back one at a time. Most builds can do it eventually with luck. A few low damage Controllers may be stuck though (I seriously wonder whether my Ice Controllers could pull it off from example because they don't put out a lot of DPS and their pet dies easily).

And no, a ST blast does NOT bring the "whole mob he's stood in the middle of as well." It hasn't any of the times I've fought them, beta or live. Single target pulls a single target with both of them. Aggros *nothing else.*
