Purposefully scattering mobs around is effectively griefing other players.
It's why I hate KB, particularly AoE Scatter KB, to begin with - it's one of a handful of secondary effects that allow one player to completely ruin the fun of others if they're not cool with it.
Resulting in either kicking the offending person, or being forced to leave a team out of frustration.
Neither is a positive resolution.
Totally.
Funny thing with knockback: it's really only a bad thing for melee types, |
That covers quite a lot of powersets.
Heck, you have enough knock back on a team its mititgation power becomes so
obvious it can't be ignored. If you have a team where all the enemies do is try to get up, you're not in that much danger. |
Except you can continue to kill the stuff that is on the ground using your most efficient attacks (AoEs).
When I was first playing, I made an energy/dev character without much thought, but basically because someone I knew who'd had a trial account once said it was fun having knockback because thugs would keep trying to attack you and failing.
I learned pretty quickly that KB is not popular on teams, but it's not as though I had many powers without KB. And once I knocked a CoT lt off a third-story balcony. (I went and finished him off.) I apolgized, but one of the group members said it was no big deal, because I followed the 0th rule of knockback:
It's okay if it's funny.
I would never dream of using a character like this for something where there was, say, a time limit. Or some other reason for which people wanted to play "seriously". But one of the things I've noticed in CoH is that people aren't always in a mood to play "seriously". They don't always care about maximal efficiency, or whatever; sometimes they want to do other things. Or they'll take powers for RP reasons.
So, basically... Yes, there are players for whom this would be griefing. Which is why, if I do play this (and I probably will), I'll be sure to carefully avoid any risk that teammates don't know about the character concept and design. The impression I get is, some people would think it was hilarious and funny, other people would find it annoying, so I just have to restrict my group choices a bit to match that.
Knockback is awesome.
I've loved my Nrg/Nrg blaster, and I've now started work on a FF/nrg and Traps/AR defenders. I guess if you're on one of those exquisitely boring teams where "herding" is the rule of the day, it's possible that it may be less effective, but I find it fairly easy to use my kb to bring guys CLOSER TOGETHER. Crazy concept I know, but a good kb'r knows how to do it. And, of course, it's hilarious.
I think those that hate kb'rs only hate em because when they catch up to the baddies, it's just a pile of corpses.
Open the pod bay doors, Hal.
*Thinks about making a SS brute called Captain Knockup*
5 seconds later...*decides the name draws the wrong idea*
Naming is an issue, too. I'm not sure I actually want to name the character "Captain Knockback", especially not if some of the hilarity comes from other powers.
Any naming suggestions? Ideally something that an over-enthusiastic teenager would think sounded really good.
"Captain Smackback?'
Helpy McHelperson. If that'll fit.
Knockback is *always* funny.

Okay, I have the clashing neon costume with the AWESOME visor, a very impressive aura and cape, and a teams that have kicked me counter in my bio. Helpy McHelperson is ready to start helping.
I would, unless Captain KB was an idiot. If he proceeded to toss everything out my melee character's range or out of debuff patches, I'd probably quit mostly because I wouldn't feel useful.

Ok, fine. Secondary limitation to the group. No melee ATs.
Wormhole, and an AoE immobilize that lacks -KB. |
Or on a really good steamrolling team, bring the next mob to you, or push this mob into the next one.
|
Heh, sounds like fun. I like the name, and the kick counter is a nice touch.
I saw, once, a cartoon that had a picture of a harried mom in a kitchen covered with messy stuff, spatters on walls, and so on, and a small child. Caption: "I'm HELPING!"
I have toyed with the idea of building a superhero (or possibly a villain) who is "helping". Say, keeping Gale on auto. Slotting energy blast for knockback. The question is... Would anyone ever willingly play with a character whose character concept was that the was "helping" in a woefully inefficient way? Would the humor value make up for the inconvenience? And if so, what is the most inconvenient build you can think of? Emphasis on something that a sufficiently exuberant child might think was "helping". |
My war mace brute (blueside) with hurdle and combat jumping disagrees. Given that she's /shield, hopping around after the scattering mobs and playing whack-a-mole is certainly not optimal play, but it's exciting play. Besides, the mobs would bunch on her anytime they're not being sent flying, and when they're flying, they're not fighting.

surprised nobody mentioned a bot/storm MM, that would generate quite a bit of KB
Was thinking of a potential name for it but Botty Knockers would just get modded instantly I feel

Somebody pick a server as this clearly demands a full supergroup - "Team Knockback" or "The League of Physical Mitigation" would be my suggestion.
Aluminum Man is an En/Elec blaster but my favorite knockaround power remains M30 Grenade - FOOMP! Boom! (numerous guys go flying ace over teakettle in all directions) it makes me smile every time.

Since Helpy McHelperson is a grav you must take the most helpful power in the game. Dimension Shift.
Yes I cringed as i had that thought.
Also for team knockback I believe Melees should be allowed, they should have 2 or 3 aoe knockback powers though. Then my thoughts went to A Kin/Energy Stalker.
Cause Burst,Focused Burstand Repel are awesome then add Leviathans Waterspout and your golden.
Also possibility of Hide kicking back in while he chases down the mobs.
I used to run on Virtue the Knockback Night!
To join the team you were REQUIRED to have a disorient, stun, knockback or any other such power that created chaos. Handclap on tanks was a major bonus.
Who did we fight?
Almost strictly the Council as their Knockback Fu is strong.
How did it play? It was the most amusing amazing experiment I ever took part in. We never required healing, we never got hurt, nothing lived longer than counting to 5. I saw Elite Bosses knocked into the air cartwheel and be dead BEFORE they hit the ground.
It was epic and absolutely without equal in my CoX gaming experience. Most players would join with serious doubts and within 2 groups were laughing so hard they were crying. Had one tank quit because he thought we were crazy. He was trying to herd as we were unleashing chaos.
The best tank we ever had would jump in hit taunt and unleash Handclap - then we loosed the bowling for villains powers!
Hmmm, I may need to start that up again.
Nothing is worse than a Gravity Dom/Troller using Dimension Shift in every mob!
I swear!!!! I joined PUG two weeks ago in Praetoria and this Grav Dom kept using DS on every mob. Why do we need DS at lvl 4???? The mobs were -1 level...
What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.
