What actually happened was Peter DID get shot and everything experienced since then has been his mind going through the paces of dying.
The whole thing with May? His conscious mind not believing that he COULD be shot, so instead it has to be his frail, old Aunt. Mephisto? His subconscious fears taking over in the final moments before his mind shuts down.
