Concussive maintenance; helping ease rage since the dawn of electronics.

Regarding the server move and new hardware.
Frankfurt - ~160msec ping, but constant lost packets and red netgraph spikes. Auctions have been laggy as hell for the last month or few.
Shiny new server in US - ~250msec ping but no spikes of lag. Auctions much more responsive.
So, about 66% increase in ping time, however it was overall a much smoother experience tonight than I've had in a long while. (took my Dual Blades/Willpower scrapper out for a run, as brief lag spikes can play hell with keeping combos going, no problems at all.)
Works for me.

So far for me the new servers seem as smooth as a snakes inner thigh

Since I resubbed I haven't seen that much lag strangely enough, and tonight since the move across the pond I haven't seen much difference either. Only minor hiccup was a mapserver disconnect at the beginning of a Safeguard Mission, but I think that was local because everyone else was already at the bank by the time it reconnected.
As for the SteelRat_EU possibility, I'm completely fine with it. I don't really see it as "losing my identity" because, well, my identity is included in there, and not many people know me anyway (at least not who still play). Definitely not worth leaving the game over, and that's for sure.

actually snakes have vestigial limbs that have regressed back into the body... so technically inner thigh would be kinda... bony and fleshy too and if you got that close you'd get blood on your...
ok I'm just not going there

Whatever magic you did to get the auction servers working so smoothly? Amazing stuff.

Now they are pretty much in the same spot, so less transit time.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
Theres a lot of cheering going on on here but everyone fails to realise that pings to the US will double.
For example my ping used to be 105 to the old server but now its 225 and there is no way to change that no matter what hardware you put into the server its just down to distance.
That kind of ping causes power lag, you can hit a power and it won't do anything for a couple of seconds and that can lead to all manor of nastyness.
The move sounds great for ncsoft so they can save money in maintance and what not but it will impact performance to all the EU members who pay to play on a EU server thats not in the EU anymore.
I pay to play on a EU server because thats where i live and a EU server gives me the best ping.
If i wanted to play on a US server i would.
Defiant's GoEH/MILITIS METUS
So far and I have to admit it's only one nights play. I have had less lag then before.
This could change but so far it's good.

Apparently the transfer even beat up Lag Hill; SG friends said they ran into no lag where theres usually loads.
However, I wasnt there, so I cant attest wether it was true or not. May run an ITF to double check. Sceptical, but if it were true it'd be awesome.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

now, if only they could use some half-decent software for the forums so that it logged me in, and kept me logged in for more than 2minutes when I tick the Remember Me box.
@craggy see me on Union for TFs, SFs (please!) or just some good ol fashioned teaming.

Wouldn't that be down to the upgraded hardware rather than geographical position of the server.

My money would be on a little from column a), a little from column b).
To expand a little, one of the main issue I've been having with the Frankfurt servers isn't ping. It's been lost packets and spikes of lag, which as far as I could tell were down to the routing from me to Frankfurt.
Now this is based on only one nights play, but the routing to the new location seems to be less prone to such glitches and as a result, the improvement on lag hill could well be a combination of improved server hardware and a more reliable path to/from the server.
YMMV

Bit of both.
its alot of entities data to ping back and forward to the server, which would mean the line was to blame
its alot of entities for alot of players the server had to do the maths for, so in part the server to blame.

- The Italian Job: The Godfather Returns #1151
Beginner - Encounter a renewed age for the Mook and the Family when Emile Marcone escapes from the Zig!
- Along Came a... Bug!? #528482
Average - A new race of aliens arrives on Earth. And Vanguard has you investigate them!
- The Court of the Blood Countess: The Rise of the Blood Countess #3805
Advanced - Go back in time and witness the birth of a vampire. Follow her to key moments in her life in order to stop her! A story of intrigue, drama and horror! Blood & Violence... not recommend to solo!

There is nothing wrong with the software. All they have to do is change the session timeout. It would take them two seconds. For some reason they have decided not to. Maybe they thought it would be more secure to have a short timeout.
|
Until yesterday, I'd been logged into the boards for about two weeks (which is the longest it's stayed in for a long while), I had to log in again yesterday and fingers crossed, I've stayed logged in since then.
If it was just a short session timeout value, I'd have been logged out long before then.
The problem is that it seems random. Some people stay logged in long term, others constantly have to log back in. Even the same person (talking purely from personal experience here) can have periods where they stay logged in and then suddenly end up being constantly logged out.

I don't think it's that, or just that.

Unless of course, I run into the completely random log outs, usually occurring when I hit the 'submit reply' button or when I try to refresh a page ...
The game server works great now though! A higher ping, but I gladly trade that for less lost packets and the resulting lag spikes, smoother gameplay on large teams and best of all a useable market that doesn't frustrate me because it bloody refuses to give me my bought items!

Finally, I can get back to the smooth play experience I had before I moved from my US account.
Thanks for this NCSoft.
As far as the forum is concerned, I'm not sure it's even due to the time out. I can get logged out after reading a thread for five minutes. It seems to be totally random and a real frustration to be honest.

Happens to everybody/most and does seem to be completely random. Nobody seems to be able to trace a common cause of it as of yet, devs commented that they are trying but its a hard bug for them to track down.

It's cuz they insist on having the game login as the forum login, which is related to the account connection.

Thelonious Monk
Greetings all,
We have an important announcement for our EU players. On 11th November 2010 we will be moving our four European servers to a new data centre in the United States. As part of this migration, we will be taking the servers down starting at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time (1:00 p.m. British Time / 14:00 Central European Time). This migration is expected to take approximately 6 hours, but it could end sooner or later. Check back for updates on the downtime. This migration will help to centralize the City of Heroes servers allowing for higher quality and more efficient systems management. One location for all of the City of Heroes game servers will make it easier to support and upgrade the hardware. For example, as part of the migration, all of the EU game servers will be upgraded to brand new hardware. Also, it will improve our ability to respond to performance issues and streamline processes for keeping all servers up to date and online. With the new data centre being located in the United States, it is possible that some of our European customers could experience additional lag when connecting to the game servers. However, the hardware is much newer, more efficient and our testing in most cases has shown no impact on performance. Additionally, customers in Europe will now consistently connect to the game servers through a more robust Internet pipeline. This means that our European players may actually notice improvements to their overall game experience. This move does not impact your account, characters or game client. You existing account and user information will all be preserved. There is no work necessary on your part to prepare for this migration. Please note that City of Heroes European game servers can only be accessed by European accounts, and City of Heroes North American game servers can only be accessed by North American accounts. There will be no server list merge or server merge as part of this migration. Thank you very much for your patience with this matter; we appreciate your continued support of City of Heroes! |
As yet there is no way we players on EU servers can play on NA or NA players on EU, well not without taking out a sub. to the opposite servers
We live in hope that a full server list merge will happen.

Edit: And I should have know that would happen as soon as I posted that.
Like some players here, i already have @damz on both my NA and EU account. Is very annoying that my old AE arcs comments got sent to my NA account instead of the EU account that created it
Could see why people wouldnt want to lose their global though, i know that damz is my ID and how people know me [had to convince someone i was damz while on a rare character without damz in the name, they didnt believe me!], but i would just as easy change it to Damzv1 or something.
