Walking Dead on AMC
I don't think that it was a coincidence that the huge van they drove into the city with was apparently stolen by a very angry and vengeful red neck who had to hack his own hand off because some goody-two-shoes hand cuffed him to the top of roof.
I can see the clip now where his bleeding stump has a bunch of zombies following him as he comes across the van. He climbs in through the back, with a bunch of the geeks trying to get at him and he drives out to the camp for a special delivery!! |
I simply don't buy the "Merle took the truck and led the geeks back to camp" idea either by accident or on purpose. That'd be way too simple an explanation. The fact that they allowed the audience to even jump to that as a possibly is the classic definition of a "red herring".

I don't think the zombies are attracted MORE by blood. They aren't sharks, so the amount of blood Merle did or didn't have is irrelevant.
The amount of zombies and the lack of them triggering the "alarms" is a good point. This leads us to believe there is someone that at the very least led them there and helped them into camp by disabling the "alarms". If it was Merle, then he had to have hidden the truck somewhere down the hill/mountain(whatever it is) as the road is the only way in with a vehicle that we've seen. So he would then had to get out of the truck and lure the geeks on foot to the camp area, all without being caught and eaten.... if he hasn't been eaten that it.
OR it could be someone else all together. It's not like these are the only survivors as we've witnessed with the gang and the nursing home. Seriously what were the conditions prior to the zombolypse that allowed the nursing home to be in that condition? Sheesh! Regulations people!
Good point also about the bolts from the crossbow. Merle's brother did re-use bolts and he shot the gang member in the rear. So will he turn? Is wiping the zombie blood off on their clothing enough to clean it? I do remember them showing him cleaning the bolts at one point after pulling it from one of the geeks' head. Or is it purely saliva that transmits the contagion?
The more I think I have answers the more questions pop up.
I just don't see Merle doing that. He's more the type to walk in and shoot the people he hates or drag them off and toss them to the zombies.
total kick to the gut
This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.
I like shows that have mysteries that serve the purposes of the plot.
Mysteries that crop up because the story is designed to be ill-defined or vague just for vague's sake don't thrill me too much.

I know people in this thread have been arguing the idea that after several weeks/months the campers would grow tired or complacent enough to let their guard down. But seriously folks they just saw a "geek" like a day before a few yards from their tents. If there was ever a time for them to "wake up" and get serious about being prepared it was then.

Someone clipping the wire is more logical, and leads right back to Merle supposition... and just makes me eager to find out what really happened. (And see any interaction between Merle and his brother in particular.)
Also, in the comics, they don't really get serious about security until Rick shows up. The best they had was Dale on top of the RV keeping watch.

I'm really enjoying this series and I want more. For years I've been listening to my local comic book shop owner tell me all about The Walking Dead series because I read Invincible, also by Robert Kirkman. I've ducked it many times, having almost bought the first trade, but putting it back for whatever reason. I've also read the first issue online and was very impressed and almost got the first couple of trades off amazon.com, but I decided against it. Now I'm faced with the delima of wanting more of the story, by getting the trades, but I don't want to spoil the TV show for myself. Arrg! What do I do?
@Joshua.
I have heard that the TV series is diverging from the comic in some significant ways like....
...COMIC SPOILER POSSIBLY...
There is no Merle and some of the secondary characters are only on the show, not the book.

Loving the show so far but I'm curious and my brain can't remember right now: is Andrea's sister the first one we've seen bitten on the show but left alive? Have they shown that the infection (presumably) is spread by bites?
Should we expect the survivors to freak out if the birthday girl revives and tries to take a bite out of her sister next week or will she already be head-shot?
P.S. I am also of the opinion that this was Merle's doing.

Edit - There was Morgan's wife, back when Rick was still in his hometown. They said she was bit, went feverish/sick, died, came back. That's why they were restraining Rick because of his wounds. They thought he was bit.
She was bit on the neck and bled out. She wasn't alive at the end, iirc.

I guess the only question I'd have is whether or not the original comic book author is either directly working on the TV show right now or at least publicly endorses the changes that'll be made. If that were the case I'd have no misgivings about changes at all. Otherwise there's always the chance things can go bad.
There have been a few recent examples of TV/movie adaptations which have been handled that way. For instance Charlaine Harris (the author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels that HBO's True Blood is based on) has strongly supported the changes they've made to her original storylines and I'd have to agree the TV show is better than the books in a number of ways. Another good example is the recent American movie remake of the Swedish "Let The Right One In" (called "Let Me In") which was endorsed by the original author of the novel as a faithful adaptation.
Hopefully any changes to The Walking Dead will also be done in ways that fit within the original vision of the story.

That would not really surprise me. It's hard for movies/shows to stay 100% true to an origin story.

Is there a way I can watch this online? I usually catch it on demand on Monday afternoons, but I have to work an overnight shift tonight and wanted to re-watch the series so far online.
@Joshua.
Ok. That makes it work for me then. I have no problems separating movies, television shows, or cartoons from the original works that they are based on. I treat them as two separate properties. I know that things were a little different in the first episode, but it had the first issue of the comic series down almost exactly, so I assumed that it was following comic continuity. Maybe I will become a Walking Dead TPB addict like I am with Invincible.

Where I usually have a problem is when shows like this start changing things without any "buy-in" from the original creators. When completely different people start to "reimagine" a story just for the sake of mucking around with it things rarely go well.

What I'm wondering is why the gangbanger nurse that got shot in the butt didn't turn into a zombie? Wasn't he shot by those crossbow arrows that the one guy keeps reusing after shooting infected zombies?
What I'm wondering is why nobody was screaming for her to get away from her dead sister but me.
That whole time I kept expecting to lose both sisters, when Amy ended up returning...
I loved the whole feel of the swarm attack though. When you think about it, they'd probably been an outlying group of walkers that had been set in motion by the mustang. Slowly heading in the general direction of camp.
It just took them a little bit to shamble all that way, but zombies don't get tired. So all of the sudden the entire camp is chocker block full of walkers.
Was a great, eerie kinda moment.

So handwaving it away by not mentioning allows the Vatos to fade into the background and serve as an important lesson to the original group on judging by first appearance.

I bet that is how tonight's episode starts.

Probably didn't turn because we will never see the Vatos again, I bet. That would be a major plot point, and since the climax of that encounter was the two groups becoming friends bringing that up in the narrative would a) make Rick and his group seem like terrible people for bringing the virus into the home and b) would extend the episode.

They may revisit it in a later episode, though. Plenty of time for someone to explain it, or for the survivors to revisit the Vatos. If an explanation is never given, I'm content assuming that Nurse Vato, having witnessed the results of "it", was aware of the danger and skilled enough to sterilize the wound in time.
If we are going by WWZ rules, the infection speed is based upon how badly the person infected was wounded. A scratch or graze from an infected will result in a "slow burn", meaning there can be a good portion of time from initial infection to the fever stage then death and reanimation. But a bite to a close spot, like Amy's, will result in a much quicker death and reanimation.
Presuming the quarrel was, at minimum, wiped down to remove a good portion of the infected material, it could result in a slow burn if the impact site was away from major arteries and veins. There'll still be virii on it, but not to the extent that it would be. I seem to remember Redneck wiping down the bolts after removing, if only so that material on it wouldn't affect its flight pattern.
Had a spoiler written up in a different color, but thought better of it. >.<

Basically I would feel better to learn there was some kind of "trick" as to why they were so easily attacked (like someone cut the wires) because if they were just totally stupid then I won't have much sympathy/empathy for them from now on.
