Oh I'm well aware there's no substantial evidence to support the idea that I20 will be the introduction of "F2P CoH". But since people here are already hyping up the conspiracy theory that CoH is going to become F2P any day now I thought I'd have some fun throwing some wood on that fire.

I wouldn't mind Paragon Studios making City of Heroes/Villains free to play if the game greatly benefited from it.

City of Heroes/Villains could also go free to play the moment CoH2 launches. If CoH2 is real at all.

Is this for me or for publisher? I know what I posted. For what it's worth you can call me an idiot...that's how much I think of your opinion.

Moving along, all of us everyday are protecting what we invest in. Some do it with their cars, families, looks, jobs, kids, marriages, or whatever. Who wants to invest in something that is ending?
Because your posts convey both ignorance and arrogance about many things relevant to what you're whinging on about. A fair number of other people, including myself, have addressed specific inaccuracies and assumptions in your posts. So your reply drives home the point that you've made up your mind about the state of things and are ignoring any facts that conflict with that model.

To paraphrase the Doctor: "The very powerful and very stupid have something in common: instead of changing their opinions to match reality they change reality to match their opinions."

There's a reason we use "F2P" to mean Free To Play in these conversations, and it's not because we're lazy, trying to be cute, or like textspeak. It's because "FTP" already means something in computer parlance, and has for over forty years. Please don't confuse things by making up your own acronyms.

Where do you think that came from? All suckers were "confident" they could win.

If you want me to be honest, I feel stupid for investing in this game. I have wasted 8 months of life.
Then quit wasting ours...

And you're suggesting that as long a CoH DOESN'T become a F2P game then "wasting 8 months of life" as you put it would be OK?
I think you have more to worry about than the fate of the payment structure of this game...

Free to play is a gamble, in that rather than allowing access for 200 paying players, it allows 2000 hoping that 11% will pay at least $15 a month in purchases. If more than that pay, it's the obvious business choice. If less, then it's a failure.

At that point it's all about how good the game comes off to those 2000 players that they actually want to stay and pony up for stuff. ..And if it's too good, they have no incentive to pay for extra. What would CoX do? level cap 40 for non-payers? No power pools for non-payers? SF/TF's for a fee? No IO's for non-payers? One or two characters available unless you pay? The trick is that there's a fine edge between luring in players with palatable goodies for a price, and annoying the entitled new crowd by locking stuff away that seems arbitrary.

Nevermind the PR balancing act that happens when long-time customers feel cheated after paying hundreds of dollars, some over a thousand, for the game in the past.

The even worse outcome is when people don't like your buyable content, and you're forced to either (a) restrict free stuff even further, so that the new players have to pay for stuff that was once free, or (b) go back to a subscription model, removing everything that the free player once had.

I'm not sure I see NCsoft wanting any of these options just yet, as there's a lot of uncertainty and headaches involved. The fact is, it has to bring in more cash than the subscriber+booster sales already already does, and have a low probability of actually reducing game income. The game is lower in population, but not to the point that I see the bigwigs rolling the at this time.
Basically, the F2P is speculation. This is a business but just ask the user what they want to pay for. I see all of these companies doing everything but talking directly to the users. Niches can be profitable if the terms are well negotiated. I would be willing to pay more under the right conditions. But business is business. Change means less. Charge more and give less. This why they don't want to talk to us because we won't agree to this.

Going by his wild and wacky posts so far... He might actually mean that the big thing Issue 20 is bringing us, the one sole reason why people participating in its closed beta need to sign a physical NDA: Issue 20 is finally bringing us File Transfer Protocol.

If you came into playing a pretendy funtime game thinking it was a long term investment instead of just a temporal form of entertainment, I think we all know who the sucker is.

People that honestly think a game is a waste of time don't continue to pay to play it.

I think this game is explicitly a waste of time. However, I have a lot of time on my hands and it's a pleasurable way to waste it, so I'm glad to pay for the privilege.

Quiet you, or I'll withhold your spankings.

If it does go F2P, all I ask is for the following.

1. That I can still pay my 15 bucks a month to get my CoX fix.
2. Everything continues on like normal otherwise for those paying the sub fee. New issues, new content, that kind of thing.
3. Make all the F2P heroes start in Galaxy City and have to purchase access to Atlas.
4. A new starter zone for Villians given the same treatment.
5. If those cannot be done, at least allow me to ignore all F2P players or at the very least tripple the size of my ignore list.

I'm just looking forward to telling my accountant that money spent on a MMO can now be considered an "investment".
I wonder if I'll have to pay capital gains on that.

If they make the F2P players use the EU servers they won't have to do #'s 3, 4, and 5.

I just repeated this on Facebook, maybe it should go here too.

(I've probably been on the net since before you were born. To the vast majority of today's netizens FTP is as alien as Gopher.)

Strike that, reverse it. Everyone knows all the cool people start in Galaxy.

You'd be wrong. I'm older than the internet. You have a vastly overinflated sense of yourself.

So that means you're older than Al Gore?
Sorry, I couldn't resist myself with that.

/derail thread

Whatever happened to the lawsuit that idiot filed claiming NCSoft makes their games too addictive? Has that been laughed out of court yet?

A lady never tells, but I will verify that I am younger than Al Gore. He had to be old enough to be a Senator to create the internet, after all.

Hmm...sorry, that's just you. Sending somebody an FTP is pretty darned common nowadays. But that might just be me in the corporate/digital realm.

This'd be about the one way to do F2P without me largely leaving the game out of annoyance. So I approve!

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
