I remember the glory days and cry every time I remember them. My name sake is perma-retired because no amount of IOs will ever get him back to his pre-issue 3 playability. If we got resists caps removed and they returned perma powers like perma-unstoppable I would love that because the game was way more fun back then. When we were real heroes. I remember when we used to pull all the critters on the map to 1 spot and the blaster would nuke them all. We feel so artifically limited now with all these caps.

I remember those days especially since my main is katana/regen so toggle Instant Healing was great.

And although gathering up huge herds and then tearing through them was fun for a short while, not having any real challenge got boring.

I remember gathering up +7 bosses with my /regen and not worrying at all having to go get a drink or anything because they didn't stand a chance of killing me.

Heck, I remember after hitting 50 needing to go and purposely die just so that I could get the debt badges.

The game has much more sustainability now compared to before.

Arcade games get boring after awhile.

Original game was terrible compared to what we have today. The broken power sets trivialized entire other archetypes, and the REALLY broken ones trivialized entire other teams. There was no REASON to have a debuffer or controller on your team when you had a good tank. The perfect team was one tank, one or two blasters, and a bunch of people leeching exp. If you had a fire/fire tank, you didn't even need the blasters.

If you guys want to relive that "game experience" where you kill everything at will, play a single player game with cheat codes or something. It has NO BUSINESS being in an MMO.

I did that once with Nemesis Jaegers in PI, on a BS/Inv. The resulting explosion(s) nearly killed me. Some other players were passing by and actually commented on the noise and light show, because they thought at 1st that it was the Fire/Fire blaster with me using Inferno.

I used to run the docks in PI with my pal, me with my kat/regen, him with his dm/regen. Nothing quite like piling up so many nemesis they kill you when they blow. Watching him unload Shadow Maul on a big stack was an absolute delight.

We also had great fun herding in Bricks with his fire tank before the Burn nerf.

There were no Fire/Fire Scrappers in the "Glory Days," therefore I remember them as the "Less Glorious Days."

Most of this stuff talked about was before my time. (Started about a week before i9.) I have heard the stories, though, and I think I would have loved the old COP hami raid, the IH toggle, the dmg/range HO in headsplitter and shadow maul, and the spine/invul scrapper that made tanks pointless, the days of dumpster diving, and the beast fire/fire tank.

What isn't before my time that I luved was the lvl 41 anchor bug and recipe rewards for completing TFs. I miss running 5 katies in a row a day on 5 different alts and ended up with at least one numina or one lotg recharge speed out of it a day. Its a shame what has happen to that glorious TF.

Maybe this could be for lvl 50 toons where XP is required anymore? Maybe make it like an ITF except with way more enemies and waves and such. For my 2 inf worth of opinion, the game was never more fun than before ED. And as much as I'd like to play the game the way it was versus the way it is, I can also see that it is just not practical. Mostly, for farming reasons. Farming was far easier back before ED. I remember the glory days of my fire-ice tank rounding up a mission of ninjas and systematically dispensing with said group. Heroic feeling? Yes! Fun? Hell yes! Practical? No.
  • Unless you limit the access to pre-ED mission(s) to only level 50's there will be a group of people who will take their second build and build with no-caps in mind and the farming community will explode again.
  • If it's limited to only level 50's then 50's will farm it for influence or tickets, etc
  • If you remove all rewards from it, there is no reason for anyone to do it more than a couple times. Then one has to ask, why would the devs invest any time in something that people would use a couple times?

Me personally, I doubt if I would have stuck with this game if I hadn't been completely hooked by the gameplay and power you could obtain that I experienced in beta. Things were so much easier to understand for a new player and it didn't take long to understand concepts like blasters need accuracy and damage in their powers, so I'll go 1 accuracy enhancement and then 5 damage. If I would have started now, I might feel puzzled when someone tried to explain to me that putting 5 damage enhancements in one power is a bad idea. Or totally lost when someone tried to explain to me auctions/IO's/crafting and set bonuses to do what I was trying to do with enhancements.

But, things being what they are, I understand why it can never be. *sniff sniff*

I had a friend was a big baseball player
back in high school
He could throw that speedball by you
Make you look like a fool boy
Saw him the other night at this roadside bar
I was walking in, he was walking out
We went back inside sat down had a few drinks
but all he kept talking about was

Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Well there's a girl that lives up the block
back in school she could turn all the boy's heads
Sometimes on a Friday I'll stop by
and have a few drinks after she put her kids to bed
Her and her husband Bobby well they split up
I guess it's two years gone by now
We just sit around talking about the old times,
she says when she feels like crying
she starts laughing thinking about

Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

My old man worked 20 years on the line
and they let him go
Now everywhere he goes out looking for work
they just tell him that he's too old
I was 9 nine years old and he was working at the
Metuchen Ford plant assembly line
Now he just sits on a stool down at the Legion hall
but I can tell what's on his mind

Glory days yeah goin back
Glory days aw he ain't never had
Glory days, glory days

Now I think I'm going down to the well tonight
and I'm going to drink till I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
but I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
a little of the glory of, well time slips away
and leaves you with nothing mister but
boring stories of glory days

I was honestly too lazy to read the entire thread, but the only people who could do this would be people from back then, it would be unfair to let the unknowers have the privilege. I used to farm Chimaria on my Kat/regen scrapper all day and night. Those were the days alright...

And now are definitely NOT the glory days, more like the lame days... way too difficult to slot powers now, no pvp back then or no villains... it was great... and if you had over 20-40 mil or so, you were a high roller now thats just one enhancement if not less, which is absolutely crazy, if someone from back then came here they would say WTF why would you spend THAT much money on one enhance? and also people sold/traded HOs for 5-10 mil...

I've been around a while, and while players were capable of some crazy things, I wouldn't accept the associated losses of playing long-gone issues. We fought a long time for some of those fixes and features.

And besides, what would happen if you loaded up your Kin/Shield meleer in, say, I4? Would you have any powers? Would you exist at all?

If you are wanting to fuel a desire for the past, consider this: Back in CoH beta, Hasten was a toggle. At least, that's what I've heard. I didn't realize how awesome hasten was until i6 or thereabouts.

In my early days, I didn't want to take Integration in the Regeneration set because it made my female character do the silly "Me Tarzan!" animation.

Since ED came up, I just wanted to say that I never thought of putting more than three of a single type of enhancement in a single power even when it was possible for that to be helpful. So I generally shrug when I hear that mentioned.

I still have one dm/regen scrapper on Virtue whom I have not touched, and is still specced and slotted for pre-ED.

I load him up and cry to myself every so often. Partly because of the glory gone, partly because the game is so much better now.

I wouldn't mind City of Pocket Defender/Corrupter though.

City of SR suck followed by city of SR perma elude and back around to city of SR pretty darn awesome...

I'll keep my city of SR at pretty darn awesome.

I don't think I could take the ridicule of city of SR suck again.

I read these, and not having been in game until after I6 hit, I'm glad I wasn't there. I would have been spoiled by the power scale, and wouldn't be nearly as excited hearing about the Incarnate slots and what they may do for the epicness of the power levels in the future.

Last night I was on my L50 Stone tank in Talos, after taking down Eochai with a PUG, and I spotted a small mob, about 35 levels down from or so, so I went over and hit them with Tremor, and they all just flew everywhere and dropped. That's Epic enough to satisfy me for a few minutes.

I truly don't understand. If what was out in GR beta was any indication, we're going to be able to do things our I0-I3 characters would never have been able to touch.

A lot of what's changed that's downgraded what our characters can do are not changes to powers, but almost environmental changes. The way mobs used to stack into the same spot was one of the most enabling things for the crazy stuff we used to do back then. Combine that with no aggro cap and no AoE cap and mad hi jinx ensue.

And that's some of the stuff that's changed that we'll never get back to - having no target cap on AoEs and no cap on aggro. Those things get down to our core XP/time efficiency. If you can herd unlimited numbers of foes and AoE them all, your XP per time goes up radically. The fact that the devs believe they have to limit stuff like that mean those changes are here to stay.

So yes, peak XP rates went down from the glory days. But in general, what my characters can achieve individually is vastly greater now than it was then, especially when I look at improvement across all my characters instead of just specifically at the powersets who were god-like in the old times.

Of course, back in those days, there really was no reason to farm. There were no benefits to amassing large amounts of Influence. No Inventions. No Recipes or Salvage. Most level 50s, once they purchased their final set of SOs, had more Influence than they had ways to spend it . . . People would hang out in Atlas and give it away -- but only in amounts of 99999 or less. (and no commas in numbers, either)

And there was a heck of a lot fewer things for high level characters to do, also. Pretty much team up to keep running the Maria Jenkins arc. Or the Shadow Shard. Very few reasons to play level 50 characters. Hami Raids were the big social event for level 50 characters, and the only significant way to improve your character.

While there were a few unbalanced things "in the old days," the game is far, far better today.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Controllers had army of pets, grav's with 3 singies were perma holding AV's. Fire controllers were imp ranchers. Illusion really did bring a "Phantom Army" with 2 or 3 Phantasms, decoys and Phantom army.

5 Fire imps on a summon! 2 Fire imps

Defenders were good up until level 32 or 38, then you pretty much wished you had rolled a controller. (No Sonic blast back then)

Tanks had no aggro cap, powers had no AoE cap. Herding hundreds of mobs together and melting them had its moments.

I remember all these. Ah memories... lol

The game is better now, but I must say. I wouldn't mind having five Phantoms in my army, or 3 singularity's.

If I can remember my actual first level 50 toon. She was a Force Field/Mental Blast Defender. That had to be the longest toon ever to make it to lvl 50. If it wasn't for those nice fire tanks herding the entire map. I think I would have given up on her.
