Yay! Glad you like Rose's reasons for being in Paragon City.

My personal favorite of my own is The Lounge Crooner. It sounds (to me) like something you'd see a TV series have for a plot; each week having an adventure for one more piece of the puzzle...

Her name was Lola. She was a showgirl.

But she was also a covert military agent looking for the right person. You see, Lola was working on an implantable aural frequency device which could convert sound into a tangible force, able to break through objects and knock men flat. But she needed the right wavelengths to properly condense and transform into a weapon.

When Lola heard Rodney "Starry" Knight singing at the Twin Pines in upstate New York, she knew she found her voice. Rodney agreed to the experiment after Lola promised him a permanent gig at the Atlas Park Geneva Hotel in Paragon City once the project was complete. But now Lola's missing, no one knows where she's gone and Rodney is going to need to find Lola and bring her home if he ever wants to make it big.
...too bad I hate playing his power set

Samurai Dawn's amazing skills and powers derive from collaboration with a strange otherwordly entity named Frupoq, who somehow managed to become trapped in this dimension in the form of white cotton panties that somehow managed to wind up in the glove compartment of Samurai Dawn's (now ex) boyfriend's car. Samurai Dawn was about to throw the panties out the window of the car when suddenly they spoke to her, promising to bestow great power upon her if only she would wear them. Although reluctant at first, Samurai Dawn eventually gave in and donned the talking panties. While wearing the panties, Samurai Dawn can summon a ghostly katana and is automagically proficient in its use. She also becomes exceptionally agile and is able to dodge almost all attacks except for those of extremely skilled opponents and occasional lucky shots. It should be noted that she is not actually a samurai, nor is her name really Dawn.

"Aw, man. Yeah. I bought this rockin' red '63 Gibson ES-335. Ain't no better guitar for rockabilly, now, don't let nobody tell ya no different. To pay for it I took this dullsville office job over at Pearl Labs, where they make these freaky newfangled magnets. Well, one night I took a pair of Inverse Phase Polychoron 9000 cryo-magnets and put 'em in the pickups on my 335, and believe me, the sound was out of this world. Then I spilled lemonade - that cool refreshing drink - on the guitar and it caused this crazy 'di-mensional redaction' event thing and now I'm all cool and electrified. So I figure I'll just keep on rockin' and be, like, a super duper hero on the side. Fightin' crime for truth, justice, and rock and roll. The good folks at the office came up with my hero name: 'He's Office Rocker!' I kinda like it. So, yeah. Rock on!"

By the way, Samuraiko, I read TCoSR not that long ago. It was incredible. Thanks so much for all the hours you must've put into it.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed TCoSR! The next chapter is almost done...

Here, btw, are the actual in-game bios for Agent Tavarisch, Agent Blake, and one of my villains, the natural-origin Mercs/TA Mastermind, Profiteer. (I STILL can't believe I got that name on Justice, and as late in the game as I did... and then they created an accolade named Profiteer too! I was so stoked...) They'd have much lengthier ones, but the 1024-character limit is a pain.

Quote:
Theoretical physicist, gadgeteer, and researcher, Sorina 'Tava' Tavarisch is one of the new generation of scientists and superheroes taking part in the cooperative efforts of the United States and Russia. (Her older brother, Stefan, currently serves as Molotov Svbody (Freedom's Hammer), one of the Valiant Defenders, based in Moscow.) After Vanguard was formed, Sorina joined when she proved talented at field-adapting Rikti technology. Later, when the Freedom Corps branch known as Star Patrol was formed, she was recruited by Agent Joelle Wright to further their mission as a more 'hands-on' division. Sorina serves as a Commander in the Star Patrol, and is their Vanguard liaison. As she is bilingual in English and Russian (with what she jokingly calls a 'minor in Rikti'), the others tease her by calling her "Comrade" instead of "Agent," as her name closely resembles the Russian word 'tovarich', or 'comrade.' Sorina is currently dating Dr Raymond Keyes, aka Positron.
Quote:
Funloving and psychic, Andrea Blake joined the Star Patrol for the simplest reason - the excitement. However, not being the physically strongest meant leaving the frontline combat to those better suited to it. Not the easiest thing in the world for the headstrong Andrea. However, after being shot and killed in the line of duty, she returned from the Netherworld wielding greater power - dark power. Now her body might not be the strongest in the Patrol, but her spirit is certainly the most resilient, and her repeated forays into death means that she can tap into the Netherworld and the depths of the human mind at will. Now as long as she remembers to stay near the stronger members (and keep them and herself healed), she can enjoy the excitement of being a Star Patrol member to her heart's content and her body's relief. (Andrea also on-again-off-again dates Steven Berry, aka Synapse, though neither expects the relationship to become serious.)
Quote:
For the mercenary leader Profiteer, the only thing that matters is the money. Whether you need someone rescued, kidnapped, exonerated, or framed, she'll take on the job if the fee is right. Need something stolen? Replaced? Planted? Profiteer and her mercs are the team for you. She works both sides of the fence without reservation, and holds no loyalty except to herself and her own men. Once she takes on a job, however, she sees it through... but there's nothing to stop her from turning on you as soon as the job's done if someone's paid her price. While her mercenary soldiers combine brute strength with covert stealth, Profiteer herself prefers the quick and silent method of archery. Her gimmicked arrows are outfitted with a number of stolen technologies to soften up opponents before her mercs mow them down. Profiteer is also one of the foremost smugglers and purveyors of goods from Paragon City to the Rogue Isles. From the docks to the dives, she knows where the goods are... and who will pay for them.

My Kat/Energy Stalker, Rustblight is a renegade survivor of Dr. Vahzilok's Eidolon process. How he maintained his mind is unknown... and why the ability to rust all corrode-able metasl in his immediate area manifested as opposed to one of the more mundane sets of abilities possessed by other Eidolon's of the twisted doctor is yet another mystery.

Here is a pic and his in-game bio:

KINGS ROW, Paragon City, RI — Vahzilok attacks are once again on the rise in the neighborhood. Many townsfolk have been killed, maimed or taken by the minions of Dr. Vazhilok. Heroes are trying to mount a resistance against... [section smudged beyond recognition] ...phanie Gardener. Gardener's husband and child, mourning the loss of their wife and mother declined to comment on the on-going situation.

[Not to the reader: All that is known of Rustblight is that he was once fully human, and that he volunteered to be turned into an Eidolon. Why any sane individual would do this... is unkown.]

There are some really nice Bio's here. I kinda found it hard to keep writing bios for my toons because of the limited space, and once severe altitis kicked in, it was over. I still have bio's for most of my 50's, but they are not written down.

This was my first one, for my main. A Fire/Fire tank.

Quote:
The Hive: Crey Lab #6, Paragon Protector Prototype sub-experiment 14 Code name Iguane.

Lead Geneticist Duncan writes:

Genetically modifying human DNA to accept reptilian genes ended with mixed results at best. The purpose was to determine if we could introduce an limb regrowth function on the Paragon Protector prototype.

As an aside, we were attempting to provide the prototype with auxillery energy recovory, via solar power. The experiment was considered successfull. However, upon reaching maturity the subjects genes mutated, and instead of the subject just recovering energy, the subject is able to focus the energy and radiate it back out, reaching temperatures upwards of 3000 degrees F.

Stability, however was an issue. Despite our recomendation to terminate the project at this time, it was decided to release the specimen into the general public for extensive field trials.

We have lost contact with the subject.

UPDATE:
This specimen has violently ignored all our attempts to subdue and regain control over it and it is therefore recommended that it be destroyed.

One of my favorites is for my 'Alien Goo from outer space' Goo girl character (Think humanoid Gelatinous Cube, in that it can devour everything but metal) called Gelatinous Ruse.

She is known simply as 'Goo' because that is one of the few words she can speak, which was taken after These adverts we had in the UK

Quote:
Alien Goo takes Humanoid Form!

Tremble in terror as it threatens to consume the world!

It could be anyone, your friends, your family.

I'm not feeling egotistical enough to post any of my own origins here, but of all the people I've played with, I think the favourite origin/background I saw was that of an ex-member of my Villain Group, Black Mercy (played by @RPAngel1). She's a Pain Corruptor whose power manifests by amplifying her own attributes the more pain she was in.

I won't repost it all here, because it was several posts long, but the story essentially boiled down to the discovery of her powers, a "doctor" who wished to "study" them, and the twisted, horrible asylum she spent the next several years of her life in as the doctor tortured her more and more to see how far her powers could go (eventually, she was tortured to such an extent that she was able to wreak bloody revenge, obviously). It was such a perfect villain power and such a perfect villain origin; I haven't seen its match.

He was bedridden and reliant upon life support to keep him breathing. He had begged his son to pull the plug but Emilio's father had refused and argued with the doctors to try stronger pain medication. When his grandfather asked him to set him free, Emilio listened, hearing the beloved old man's desperation and desire to be released from the pain of life. Emilio agreed then watched in fascination as the doctors and nurses scurried like ants to reverse what he had done. From that moment on Emilio found his life's work; to free as many as he could from the pain of life... to assist them as he had his grandfather.
That is beautifully twisted! I love it!

Karma Kincaid

Karma's misfortune began days after being born when her mother, an aspiring hero, od'd on Supes while trying to get powers. From there she was bounced from orphanage, to foster family, to the streets and back again.

Wherever she went someone was always trying to put her down. But Karma was resilient, if she was anything. Tomboy, brawler, trouble-maker: you name it, she was called it. Karma refused to let life beat her down, and in return it tried that much harder.

But karma is all about balance, and turnabout is fair play after all. On her nineteenth birthday, Karma walked into City Hall and registered as a hero. She's tired of being karma's only *****.

Time to spread the joy.

Odd. I find it an interesting challenge to write a bio in the limited space. That is why I do things outside of the normal narrative with things like original poetry, article clippings, interviews, stream of consciousness, or just about anything else.

And I won't play a character that doesn't have a bio... so ALL of my characters have a bio written in by the time they hit about Level 4 (with rare exception).

On another note, I think it would be cool to have pictures to go along with some of these, because I find visuals are often key in making the character bio really make sense.

You don't give yourself enough credit. You are able to take a media which few manage to take seriously and produce decent work (both visual and written) which doesn't default to self-parody. I respect that greatly.

I aim for concision with my character bios, so there's usually no room to dwell on their beginnings. For my Peacemaker, Djet, I decided that the character's mental ordeal of bonding with an alien entity was an occasion to riff on the confusion that multiple retcons bring to origin stories, e.g. D.C.'s Hawkman.

Quote:
Please allow me to introduce myself: I'm Professor Wilson Lodge, the famous archaeologist and the reincarnation of the Pharaoh Djet of Egypt's First Dynasty, sometimes called "Horus Cobra" (look it up). No, that's not right. I am the Peacebringer Skysnake from the planet Kheld outside the Milky Way, sent here as a galactic police offer. No, wait, I'm an Earth-bound Akh reanimated by the Midnighter Club. I'm sorry, that's not it either. An interspatial avatar of the serpent maybe? Would you believe I come from the levitating city of Thinis founded by the King Narmer on Kheld? My apologies, I seem to be having an infinite identity crisis.
I might try to spin this off into an architect mission if I can make it amusing enough.

I get many good comments from this one:

Cinnammon (note the 2 m's, which is the incorrect spelling)

Quote:
I love cinnamon. So when the Federal Bureau of Superpowered Affairs agent asked me for a preferred superhero name I immediately quipped, "Cinnamon."

"That belongs to a villain," was the curt reply.

Saddened, I considered other names. As the unappealing names flew through my mind it wandered to the recent memory of the scientific experiments that gave me these new super abilities. Those Crey experiments were harsh.

Tap, tap, went the agent's pencil on his clipboard.

"Sorry, I said, "I was thinking."

"Think harder."

Do they ever smile?

"I'm trying!" I replied. But, I started to fantasize about my future as a superhero. The fame, the glory, the money, and .. did I mention fame?

"Ahem," interrupted the agent. "May I suggest spelling cinnamon with two Ms?"

"I'll take it!"

My favourite (of the derided "Joke character") is Fortunate Daughter, who is a valley-girl Fortunata. She pretty much treats working for Arachnos as one would do working for any major corporation.

I don't tend to focus much on backstories, more on costumes and concept.

Hail Striker: Was born into an ancient clan of onmyouji in Japan. When she was young, a terrible demon mustered forces to protect it as it cast a long and powerful spell that would plunge the world into apoctalyptic storms forever. A great battle was fought against it, but the demon couldn't be defeated, only weakened, and the spell neared completion. In a last-ditch effort, the elders of her clan decided to use an ancient demon-binding ritual, which required a human body in which the demon could be imprisoned. She was chosen.

The ritual worked, capturing the demon in her body a mere few syllables from completing his spell. The girl was covered in binding tattoos to make sure he could never escape and reducing his influence over her mind. Since it was impossible to completely ensure that he could never influence her, though, the girl's tongue was also cut out, so that the demon couldn't finish its spell even if it took her body over entirely.

On the upside, she learned to draw on the power of the almost-completed spell to manifest storm and ice, and later, on the demon's own power to tap into the netherworld. She fights crime in Paragon with these powers, and still refrains from any sort of explicit communication with other people, just in case the demon might take her over for a moment and tempt somebody into completing the spell for it.

(Storm/Archery/Dark Defender, with the Archery RP'd as her shooting icicles and lightning bolts from her bow. About the closest she ever gets to talking to people is facial expressions and the occasional impromptu ice sculpture.)

Sorrow-Weave: Was born in the Shadow Shard near the climax of the battles between Ruladak and Faathim. She's a mutant, able to channel destructive energy, but more importantly, also slightly telepathic in an unconventional manner. She feels the emotions of the people around her, but reversed. Being around happy people makes her feel angry or sad, being around sad people makes her feel good, and being around people in pain makes her feel goooood.

This obviously made her have some problems growing up, and the rest of her community started whispering that the girl must be Ruladak's daughter, somehow tainted by him in the womb when his war raged across the land. She soon enough grew to embrace this, taking what she wanted and ruling through strength alone, and when Primal Earth came into contact with the Shadow Shard, she just saw another target. These days, she rampages across the Rogue Isles, trying to prove herself worthy of her 'father's' strength and find a way to free him for good.

I played in a duo of characters where we both treated Arachnos like this. Mine was obsessed with trying to talk people into joining the Crab Spider program ("If I get three more people to agree to the spinal implants, I get a plaque!")

I agree. All my toons that are not throw away, (Throw away toons are made with base filling, or co-op missions from the holiday events that require both factions.) get a bio before I leave the tutorial. Actually, usually before they enter the tutorial.

And Dark Respite, I agree with Sam. You are a very talented woman.

Hmmmm...

One for the first Stalker I had in mind - when they were announced on COV's Release. Pared down to its essence for the bio-

Quote:
She was a quiet child. Her parents felt proud of it. Must have been their strict discipline.
"Ring around the rosy...."
The thought the pets were dead because the gangs in the area were harassing them. She acted upset... but not for the reasons they thought.
"Sheath is nice and cozy..."
She started drawing flowers... odd flowers. They found they were based on crime scene photos. Gunshots. Blood spatters.
"Knife in, knife out,"
They took her to a psychiatrist. He asked her to make him a flower. She obliged, with a pencil through the throat, another in the chest. Pretty... as she started to sketch, they came to take her away.
"All Fall down."
And for Linnurata, an energy/energy blaster/psuedo-Peacebringer:

Quote:
Saved as a young girl from the midst of a 5th Column attack on the Council by a monitoring Peacebringer, Linnurata became fascinated with the aliens. Hero worship grew to such an extent that she came to believe she WAS a Peacebringer, unawakened or in hiding, she didn't know.
Then, one day - she flew. (OK, fell from the roof, but if you ask her, she flew.) From then, she concentrated on her 'training.' So much so that - in some way the doctors had yet to explain, having found no latent mutation they could identify- she actually found she could manipulate energy. And so she went on to "do her duty."
She became a hero.
She refuses to listen to the doctors looking for a mutation or some environmental factor to explain her powers. To her, they're just part of who she thinks she is - a lost Kheldian, defending her world and making it a better place - and making some of the true Khelds proud enough of her to adopt her into their ranks.
... honestly, most of my bios/backstories tend to be done out-of-game with the SGs. So finding what I've tucked into those limits, well...

This is my latest Praetorian's... took me forever to whittle it down to fit in the in-game biography field. The full story is on the drawing board for a future project.

Glimmerin

Glimmeren never liked to draw attention to herself. A tinkerer known for efficiency, reliability, and - most importantly- silence, she spent her day fixing whatever was brought to her, reverse engineering missing parts, slicing stolen hardware, making timers for... well, nevermind.

She rarely left her workshop- preferring to focus on whatever new toys fell her way- clockwork parts, damaged tesla gloves, a partially-restored 77 Chevy Cordoba- stuff that won't notice her scars or ask about her missing arm. Stuff that won't make her recap the story behind the blast. Stuff that won't ask whose fault it was.

That was before her last batch of scrap and the strange power source that she's wired into her clockwork-prosthetic. She's putting it to use on the streets-- driven, it seems, by info recovered on its salvaged data chip. Silent as ever, though, she's not saying what she found.

-----------------------------------

She's a kinetic-melee/shield. I'd considered a scrapper, but decided she's got a good deal of inner rage that she's just starting to unleash... so brute.

Her (modified) resistance gauntlet provides the shield. The Kinetic melee part is a result of the power supply venting plasma out the palm of her prosthetic arm. The KM gestures and magnets in the fingertips help her contain and "form" the plasma ball before releasing it. It's a prosthetic, not a cybernetic. It's worn as a harness. An AI controls its action, either through anticipating her needs or taking commands she sub-vocalizes via the jaw piece. Sometimes, she can be heard arguing with it.

I tend to create characters with only vague ideas of their backgrounds, and over time develop them. Sometimes this leads to trouble, especially when I chose an origin that is hard to fit... and also when I say... picked a silly nonsense word as a name. But despite apparently doing my best to make only terrible characters (ex: Atomic Lizard-Donkey), a few of them have grown into really interesting characters that I'm quite proud of.

Explomadoza (Empathy/Electric/Power Defender): My first level 50. Xavier Paloma was born in the south Pacific, near a nuclear test site. His parents were humanitarian aid workers who came there to care for the mistreated natives. As he grew up (often in the care of relatives, as his parents were off in some faraway war-torn country), he wanted to follow in his parents' footsteps, and went to medical school to get the training to help save lives. He was working in an emergency room on a particularly terrible case when he got word that his parents had been killed in a volcanic eruption. His grief caused his mutant powers to finally manifest into something he desperately wanted, the ability to heal and save people. Over time, he learned many odd quirks of his powers, notably that he could sap energy from people who threatened others, that he could in times of great stress remove someone from harm in other ways (making them invisible or even teleporting them away from danger), and in these moments of strain he could boost his healing powers as well. He joined a U.N. peacekeeping force and fought in the Rikti War when it came to Kuala Lumpur.

Dr. Fejwol (Stone/Stone/Earth Tanker): Professor Jefferson Lowell was born in Kings Row, and from an early age it was clear that he was brilliant. He entered college by the age of 16 and quickly proved to be a highly skilled nanotechnologist. After graduating, he joined the faculty at Paragon University and assisted many tech-based heroes as a contact. One young hero he counseled ended up turning to villainy, and although Lowell wasn't as fault for that, he felt some sense of guilt about it. When the Rikti came, he couldn't just stand by and watch the heroes he'd befriended go off alone, so he constructed a rough rock armor with his nanites and joined the fight. Today, he manages to find time to not only teach at the university and work as a contact with fledgling heroes, but works as a hero himself.

Particle Accelerator (Energy/Energy Stalker): The son of a mechanic, Particle Accelerator grew up around machines, and also reading as many books about physics as he could find... although he could have gotten a scholarship with his aptitude for science, he opted to go into the family business when his father died. In his free time, he tinkered around and eventually managed to build various energy field emitters. Wanting to do something more with his life, he fitted them into a set of power gloves and registered as a hero. However, he felt lost among the thousands of other heroes in Paragon... and one day while working with a contact named Professor Lowell, he went to a warehouse to arrest some thugs, when another hero stormed in and oblivious to his presence, blasted everything away. Particle Accelerator was badly injured, and combined with the fact that his business was failing, a growing sense of resentment and anger built within him. He used an invisibility field he has been working on to sneak into a bank and rob it without being detected. And it worked! However, when he tried a second time, he was caught, arrested, convicted, and sent to the Zig. Any second thoughts he had were overridden by his rage at the good he had tried to do having been ignored, and when Arachnos staged a jailbreak, he jumped at the chance.

Bill Bowman (Trick Arrow/Archery Defender): William Bowman III spent his entire life living in Atlas Park. His father ran a hardware store, and after retirement left it to Bill. Living in a City of Heroes, he heard jokes several times that he name made him sound like some sort of archery-based hero. He laughed them off for years, but one day after seeing an ad for an archery class, he decided to try it out on a whim. He actually was rather good at it. His mundane life continued until the Rikti invaded. He huddled inside his apartment above the hardware store as battles raged outside. However, when he looked outside he saw a remarkable thing: the hero Manticore fighting off the aliens without having any powers, just a bow and arrow. Bill felt a responsibility to protect his home. He grabbed his bow, quiver, and some various scraps from around his store, and walked outside. He only fought a few Rikti himself, but when the war was over, he decided to register as a hero. He now runs a small supergroup with some other lower-powered heroes in his neighborhood, and they work to keep Atlas Park safe.
