Crazy 88's: O & M
Buying prestige using in game means (talking to the SG registrar) is entirely part of the game put in by the Devs.
Now buying the inf from 3rd parties to buy the prestige would be against the rules, but that isn't happening here.

I thought that buying Prestige was completely and totally illegal and against all rules in City of Heroes... Not to mention, you ARE spitting in the faces of people out there who are playing the game to see the numbers accumulate the fun way, and I'd honestly be pretty disheartened to find out you are cracking up the list on Virtue without actually playing the game the normal way, instead paying for all of your prestige. I mean, are you really doing this JUST to piss off people? If so, you're going to achieve it quite easily. And I'm sure you don't care because this game doesn't mean the same thing to you as it does to most of the players in the top SGs. But hey, nothing I can say will do anything to change your time, and I'm sure you're actually going to be feeding off of this...

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
I did read it. I read all 5 pages of it. I did that AFTER reading this one. I understand the logic behind all of this now. I also had another large wall of text written, but it decided not to post.
To sum it up... I don't like it. It's being done specifically to prove that INF doesn't mean anything and you want to burn it away. I just don't like it. It makes me wonder why I even play this game if there are people out there that are specifically trying to piss people off. I realize that people don't like Unknown Heroes. I realize people don't like EverStryke. I realize that the marketeers don't like RPers. But why? WHY must you do this? It just makes me feel bad. I play the game to have fun, and I like seeing the numbers go up just for playing the game. I am going to be quite disheartened to see you at #1... But like I said, nothing a 5 month veteran with 40-some-odd posts can say will change anything on your mind. I just figure I need to put my thoughts out here... You won't hear anyone else in my SG say anything because they're not a part of the forums... I guess it's stupid for me to even care, but whatever... I don't want this to seem like a rant, so much as just opening my thoughts. A rant would be me getting angry. I'm just a little... upset. I wish you guys the best though, and I hope you enjoy your newfound way to burn off extra INF. I just wish it wasn't Virtue... I guess...
runt9, we all enjoy this game for slightly different reasons.
I think that this whole project got started because people wanted to do something that was audacious and spendthrift. Influence is stupid easy to come by, if you know what you are doing. Converting inf to prestige is completely inefficient. We all know that. So being the #1 SG on a server is a lot harder when you do it through conversion. That was kind of the point.
You don't have to like it, and I expect anyone who cares about where their SG ranks on Virtue won't like it either.
But we are on our way. If you'd like to join us, please let us know.
edit: regardless, your objections should probably be in a different thread. peace out.

Personally, I think this is about the dumbest way you can rate an SG in this game and frankly, when I see "Top 10 SG" I'm neither impressed or awed.
I do find it amusing that those at the top covet this spot so dearly. Its a poor measuring stick, but its the only one we have. If it were based on hours of participation in TFs or groups, it might be better. Though I'm sure people would find a way to cheap that as well.
I digress. The reason I am 100% behind this program is 2-fold. Inflation is killing the market for the newer players. Some find their way here and learn how to make billions. Most, like me when I started, looked at what my friends were saying I was buying and I was wondering how many years it would take me to save for it.
The second, and more important reason for me is somewhat malicious in nature. When I see someone thinking they're better than someone else (especially for a reason as silly as "we have the most prestige!") I feel an overwhelming urge to knock that person off their high horse. This project will do it in a way that will firmly and irrevocably prove to these "top" SGs that your top spot means nothing. It is the quality of your people that matters. This is a game. Made for having fun. Not measuring e-peens with very sadly designed rulers. Our taking #1 will not chance the "good" SGs full of great people one way or another. They will continue to play as always, and indeed, will most likely not even care that we took the #1 spot.
I hope this helps you understand at least my position on the whole Crazy 88's.
A bunch of the marketeers I know are RPers.
I'm all for the inf-destruction projects, because I know enough basic economics to understand how they make my life better.
I don't think you're correctly interpreting the remarks about "pissing people off". We're not talking about a genuine effort to upset people. Sane people won't be upset by it to begin with. It's performance art; it's there to try to shake up peoples' beliefs about how the game works.
I don't like it. It's being done specifically to prove that INF doesn't mean anything and you want to burn it away.

To me inf doesn't have any meaning, so this project is great. It's making me pay attention again, and that's fun.
Now *your* game experience is going to be different than mine, you'll have different definitions of fun and that's great- diversity is the spice of life and all that.

I actually incorporated my crazy big piles of Inf into the storyline for my current primary RP character, and it's been a surprisingly entertaining and useful story-hook to have someone who's IC crazy rich. Probably caused as many problems as it's solved, and has provided great amusement for my RP mates.

It's being done specifically to prove that INF doesn't mean anything |
Second: Inf means something. Inf means "I can buy [thing x]. " People put other meaning on inf, like people put other meanings on real money, but inf always means "I have this much purchasing power." If we can reduce the total amount of inf in the game by a meaningful amount, that means your pile of inf has gotten proportionately larger and you have more purchasing power at Wentworth's.
... Forget it. You're right. We're buying your cake and we're putting our feet in it. It's the only reasonable explanation.

Let me quickly dissect this:
I'm not doing anything illegal, I'm not spitting in anyone's face, I'm not doing it to "piss people off," I DO care what people think, I'm not deriving lulz from your post, I think I'm entitled to spend my in-game rewards how I please, again not trying to piss people off, I see you are pulling the Veteran card--are my opinions more or less viable than yours because of my higher post count but earlier reg date--or isn't that irrelevant, and yes you're entitled to your own opinion.
Did I get them all?
Maybe I'm being blind about it, but I'm still just playing the game and having fun. I'm not deliberately griefing anyone, any SG has a right to exist and generate as much prestige as they want--no one is stopping them.
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

I have spent the prestige that was in the SG kitty and which you were probably saving to crush RP'ers Forgive me It was delicious It was so money and so cold. |

A more realistic view of the situation than OMG PRESTIGE BUYING IS CHEETING would be OMG WHY ARE THEY GIMPING THEMSELVES BUYING PRESTIGE WHEN THEY COULD BE CARPET BOMBING THE SERVER WITH RECRUITMENT TELLS AND GRINDING TFS LIKE ALL THE OTHER BIG GROUPS
I mean, if generating prestige were our primary goal we'd be better served using our billions to bribe players to grind prestige for us. That would be a vastly more efficient use of inf than throwing it away at the current ridiculous conversion rate.
"Hey, if you join our SG with its super sweet base and core of friendly players we'll pay you 500,000,000 inf to say in SG mode all the time" sounds like a pretty good sales pitch to me. =P

I've seen people in the past say that converting inf. to prestige is "cheating." I don't see how, but considering the earlier sentiment that it was a perma-bannable offense in the CoX-verse--it would appear that a wide gulf of perspective exists.
When they introduced SGs and prestige to the game, everyone I know was converting inf. to get a headstart. Later, it became a common practice to obtain just enough funds to get that big SG piece of equipment, or quickly pass ahead of someone in the SG listings.
How did it become cheating now?
Or does that only apply to us?
LONG EDIT:
Also, since we've been talking about missioning and running some TFs with each other (things no REAL SG would EVER DO!) I wonder if some strange third party would consider THAT cheating as well? Frankly speaking, there are multitudes of SG/VGs out there with their own focus. RP SGs, PvP SGs, RPvP SGs, badgers, M/ERP, TFs only, etc. Somehow we're less viable as a SG just because our focus is playing with ephemeral and flowing in-game currency?

Nobody I know was converting inf because they were outraged by the rates. That's how it happened that I knew two people (at least) who went into the Invention system with a billion inf cash.
I think the "bannable offense" claim was confusing "buying inf" with "Buying prestige". Wasn't my claim, though, so I dunno. I've been wrong before.

I'm pretty sure it was confusion over in-game conversion of inf to prestige (totally legit) vs. "buying" stuff from spammers for real money (bannable offense).
