American comic books are total BS and implausible to the 500th power. Comics ruined themselves.
BTW, I think the OP is just prejudiced against anime because it is "mainstream." He did not give a good reason why he does not like it. |
Though thanks for everyone's opinons it is interesting to read about what you have to say.
And as for the mainstream part of your comment, i must agree i do not like maistream things, such as pop music and the like. Though just because something is mainstream doesn't void it of any talent or creation (well most of the time it does) but there are definite examples out there of decent creation.
Someone else said earlier something that resonated with me, and then just again a little while ago someone else said it.
American comics can go on for too long, with too many different writers, too many changes and yet not enough change, as people change things back to the old way then change them to their new way, and then the next writer does the same.
That's why I have Vaughan's Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina and his run on Runaways. The first two have a start and a finish. They aren't going to run crossovers in other titles I have no interest in getting, they're all being published and then put into trade paperback, and that's that.
The Authority, for me, went downhill when it changed writers from Ellis. Luckly, there's Planetary and Global Frequency.
I loved District X, a Marvel title about a beat cop in a mutant ghetto in New York. Your simple beat cop stuff with a mutant twist and some personal drama. House of M came and obliterated the storyline.
Academy X, about a group of teenagers learning to control their gift at the Xavier school? House of M again. Changed into New X-Men, killed a ton of characters off.
Normally now, the only way I can stomach the mainstream heroes is either in a cartoon series (The excellent DC Animated Universe for example, which in my mind is so much better than the DC comic Universe) and the films. (Like Iron Man, for instance.)
Am I the only one kinda disturbed by the jingoism present here?
i wouldnt go that far. i dont agree with it, but he seemed more like how the french try to preserve french culture by discouraging outside sources and even some words of foreign origin, and i have seen similar things with china and japan, there will always be people who try to preserve something they feel is uniquely theirs, I feel that that mindset can go into unfortunate ways, but mostly it is just a bit backwards. i have seen jerks with this attitude as well, but the op has not gone that far so i dont think its fair to lump him in with them.
And I learned a new word today
Why thankyou frost
And yes i learned a new word also.. jingoism.. very nice haha
So you had to look up jingoism too.

Ha I knew what it was!
Also I prefer manga over comic books and over anime.
one thing about reading "bloom county" as a kid, it spiked my vocab. so i knew that word
I have not heard of one iconic character from Anime, the only thing i have heard about is Naruto and i really do not like that. Everyone has heard of Spider Man and Bat Man. Yet it is these characters who lose their origin within comic books.

Doraemon
Kenshiro (Fist of the North Star)
Goku
Gundam (and most of the AU's major characters)
Pick any protagonist from a series by Go Nagai
Astro Boy
Captain Harlock
Irresponsible Captain Taylor
Tetsujin 28 (aka Gigantor)
Noriko and Kazumi (Gun Buster)
Oh, and Naruto is not even close to getting on that list.

I just find it sad that a country like America is losing its roots.

Our British roots?
Our Native American roots?
Should I be farming or something?
But seriously, I watch the anime I like and don't watch the stuff I don't. Kinda like every other form of media. Younger kids tend to like anime for it's tendency toward angst and ultra-violence; sorta like comics in the 90s. Once their tastes mature they have a more pragmatic outlook on things, so I don't see any problem.
And yes, Japan absolutely loves our stuff. Westerns are a particular favorite, as evidenced by Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. They also have X-Men, Spiderman, Batman, and quite a few others over there as well. Why do you think everyone looks so frickin' white in anime?
As for iconic characters; ummmm... there's Astro Boy. Hmmmmm.... Speed Racer's pretty well known. Megaman, though that's more due to the game. Does Hello Kitty count?
In any case, I'm all for mixing things up with other countries. The more intertwined we are, the less likely we'll want to blow each other to smithereens.
I wonder how the author would feel about the rather american influenced comics in india. Personally given how much larged the manag industry is and how many more people read manga in japan alone vs how many people comics I would certainly hope manga is turning out higher quality based on the money and numbers alone.
Until editors learn to let writers write good quality stories and not try rely on the corssover/new costume gimick of the year we're going to continue to see comic quality decline, the good news is though you can read a lot of good stuff online for free these days like Girl Genius, Dr. McNinja, etc. etc.
I personally recomend the German Superhero Photo Comic Union of Heroes which so far has been really enjoyable if you can get into photo comics.
I think a lot of the poster's "hate" with anime can be demonstrated by walking into the DVD section at BestBuy. There are dozens of anime series, most that came out here within the last five years.
What do we have from our "iconic" western comics. Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, The Batman, Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Most over five years old.
My, what a wide variety (Batman, Batman, Batman, oh Superman, Batman).
Similar on Marvel's side. A couple of X-man and Spiderman series. Toss in a few animated movies from Marvel and DC and now compare the amount of shelf space for those series Vs anime.
Same can be said with bookstores. The manga section is usually multiple times larger than the traditional DC/Marvel trade paperbacks.
Again is it Japan's fault that they have a broader comic market than the US? Where a major chunk of our comics are superhero based theirs are all over the genre map.

Also, manga and anime are not just equivalent to superhero comics. They are also equivalent to cartoons, and pretty much every animated/drawn subset of media, including non-superhero comics (I don't hear Racist Man complaining about Archie being forgotten). That's why there's so much more anime than superhero cartoons. It's because in order to compare it fairly, you'd have to stack it up against every single bit of our media in which a pen hits paper.

you are where chase arcanum and his wife have been every time they see in sg chat:"hey guys, i just went to the tailor." its like if your buddy just sent you a "books on tape" edition of the necronomicon narrated by gilbert godfrey.
Also, tough economic times are hurting comics as well.
As someone else pointed out, it's kind insane to ask for $4 for some of these issues. I pretty much always wait for the TPBs cuz the price per page is much more reasonable.

It's very true, whether one is talking about TPBs, graphic novels, manga, or anime on crunchyroll.com, all of which have more value than a flimsy 22-ish page comic book that costs $4.
I read somewhere a few weeks ago, a bloke who had collected 4'000 comic books over the years managed to sell them for £20'000. Not bad if he bought them for around 2 pounds each that's a 12k profit approx. Value can increase over time...

The first appearance of Superman in comics is rare because no one knew they'd catch on, and they were just comics, a lot were probably thrown away. Hence, it's rare.
Now compare to the nineties where issue 1 comics were put out in the dozens with variant covers and gimmicks and so on, and that more people collect comics now, they're going to be less rare, and thus less valuable.
And who cares about Generic Image Comic Hero compared to say, Superman?
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
