It isn't if you can easily see the difference between core gameplay requirements and fun additional content. Obviously you can not.

If I'm not subscribed to a game then I will happily pay for content that interests me, like when CoH releases a new power set or costume piece. Things that whilst cool aren't fundamental to the core mechanics of the game and are not required to be able to play.

    Sensible:

    Paying for cosmetic items
Paying to gain access to new dungeons
    Paying to access different classes
Paying to access more character slots
    Paying for name change
Paying to unlock the highest item mods (like IO's)

    Not Sensible:

Paying to see the second half of your screen
Paying to see your client in English
Paying to get the submit button to work on log in
Paying to get to see your UI

Of course if you are a subscriber of the game all of this (and more) should come standard with your sub fee. Not charge you for the game, to charge you monthly, to then charge you for extra content. It's ludicrous and if you can't see that then you have more money than common sense.
  2. Thanks :P I'm not an idiot though, I know the odds are super astronomically minuscule (1 in 116,531,800 apparently) but figured i'd give it a shot anyway as I never ever play.

  3. But I will have a ticket ready for this Friday as my last ditch attempt to gather enough money to buy the IP myself :P

If I win the Euro millions on Friday I will promise that the majority of money will go towards saving this game! (Got to take care of family first! ^^)

I'm not asking for anyone to join in but if you feel lucky and want the same as me, then let's go for it!

(no I'm not being paid by the national lottery to deliver this message! haha)

I think it's around 2 pounds per ticket (for the euro millions) so it isn't much if you only play once! A pint of beer :P And you can do it online without any hassle. They even email you to let you know if you win!

My fingers will be crossed, though I have never won anything in my life so don't get your hopes up.

This is Bin Man and this is my final attempt prior to the game closing!

Edit: I'd also introduce a new villain corporation called NCorporation who's mission is to destroy all entertainment from the world!

Instead, if the game goes f2p, I predict you'll be one of those people complaining how the f2p restrictions are too draconian and how you think you are entitled to get more because you spent $x amount of money to buy the game when it was still sub based.

What am I basing my prediction on? I'm basing it on observations I've made watching individuals making the exact same "It was a good game but I didn't really think it was worth the value of what I paid for it + a subscription fee + microtransactions. I will play again once it goes F2P" statements before and after CoH, Aion, Lineage II, STO, CO, LOTRO, AoC, SW:TOR, and DCUO all went f2p.
Sensible F2P restrictions I can deal with, I know that by not paying for a monthly subscription I should be limited in what access I am granted. Whether its end game content or pvp or whatever, that's only fair. I won't even complain if they restrict things like the UI. I'll just not bother with it at all/give it a second glance.

I have no issues when things I have bought get reduced in price or is offered freely to use with restrictions, I'm not that sort of person. You might be, but I am not. I've been a subscriber to CoH since 2006, I didn't mind at all that the game went F2P because I knew it would be better for the long term success of the game. (well obviously not now lol) You however, from the tone I'm getting from reading your post, is one who is against the idea of F2P because you spent money and it isn't fair on you, the special snowflake. Who's fanboyism for the game clouds reasonable judgement. Whereas I'm only looking at things from a neutral, fair and reasonable perspective.

I can justify every individual case of why those games you listed went free to play and why they were not worth the money of a subscription to those who have played MMO's before. But I'm not going to because it would take a lot of writing :P.

Take a listen to TB's content patch about the game, he pretty much hits the nail on the head.

F2P is horrible and a blight on the industry, but it's also currently a very popular way to squeeze money out of people, so I'm sure it's not entirely unlikely to happen sometime in the future. For a lot of games.

It is also worth noting that while Funcom had to do a lot of initial downscaling due to TSW not selling as well as they had expected (and how they reached those expectations is beyond me, they seemed quite unrealistic if your name doesn't start with B and end with Lizzard), the game is apparently doing well enough now that they have been adding to the staff again since then.
Fair enough then I will give it less than half a year. SW:ToR went free to play just short of a year after launch and they have a much bigger fan base to support them.

TSW has gone largely unnoticed by the MMO crowd, launching near a time when Blizzard's next major expansion came out and when GW2 was released (and TERA I think). I think the game is brilliant, don't get me wrong I do and If I had the money to pay for it then I would as with any other subscription game I enjoy. At the moment though my funds are very limited and it's just asking for too much from me.

I can safely predict that in 6 months (give or take a few) the game will go F2P. I think that it will do the game wonders, (unless they restrict the UI like SW:ToR lol!) It has a certain charm to it this game (much like city of heroes) and can really see it flourshing in either a B2P or F2P game.

We will no doubt see heavily extended free trials before this though, but that's usually a good indicator that the current business model is failing. (at least from my experiences).
  6. Name: Ex Cell (get it? as in the spreadsheet software :> lmao) or X Cell

Does the hero take in to account that the time it takes to open his smartphone and figure out whether one crime is worth it or not could mean the difference of saving someones life?

Does he possess the ability to accurately assess the situation in the time it takes a normal hero to go with their gut instinct

We are often told that to act with wisdom is of utmost importance but to make sure that you act quickly enough to prevent something is just as important. (Which is why hero's are out there fighting the fight instead of politicians!)

I would like to see some form of robot or cyborg instead of a human. The type of hero you are portraying reminds me of the robots in iRobot where the robot saves the older man instead of the child because the older man will be able to contribute more to society. The decision is made instantaneously for the robot and there is no panic time or human error and personal emotions don't sway the decision, just hard calculated facts.

Would your hero save the bus full of handicapped children? Or would he diffuse the bomb that's about to kill 100 construction workers. Does he have any moral's or emotions or is it just hard calculated facts on what will be more of a benefit to society? Rescuing the hard working citizens or save the disabled children who will cost more to take care of.

So yeah, I think you should go with a Robot themed character, unfortunately I can't come up with a costume but hope someone that reads this takes inspiration from the idea.

Oh I agree, I just think that due to the sheer amount of choice of abilities the balancing act becomes 90% of the Dev time if they decided to focus on PvP. Fortunately they didn't and we got loads of other cool things instead.
  8. I bought this game on release for I think it was something like £40 retail, it's now on sale for a good price in most stores. It was a good game but I didn't really think it was worth the value of what I paid for it + a subscription fee + microtransactions. I will play again once it goes F2P (and believe me it will).
  9. If PvP is removed, balancing becomes a whole lot easier. This game should never have adopted PvP. It really went downhill since it was implemented (IMO). You can't have super fun OP abilities that make you feel like a real superhero because of pvp balance. Don't get me wrong I love PvP but it shouldn't have touched this game at all and if it is to be implemented it needs to be done in a way where gear isn't the prime factor influencing your success, rather skill instead.

Much like you see in Left 4 Dead, there are no stats or gear or any of that bullcrap it all boils down to teamwork and how good you are in a stressful situation.

Don't let these guys get you down Evil, at the end of the day its your signature do with it what you want. No matter what you put there someone would find something to complain about it anyway. It's quite funny to see people get so upset over something so meaningless. People need to take a step back from the computer more often and look at the bigger picture me thinks.
  11. Bin Man

    Farewell :)

I don't post a lot on the forums but just thought I would leave my respects for a great game and great community and reminisce about the good times!

Well I first found out about City of Heroes when I was around 13/14 years old. A friend of mine had a gaming magazine and an article about City of Heroes caught his eye so he told me about it. I couldn't stop reading it, it looked amazing! I could be a hero, something I had never been in a game before and what's more is that I can play with other people?! Superspeed, flight?! My eyes lit up and my imagination began to soar. I immediately began thinking of concepts for my super heroes and I told my friend that I was going to get the game for sure.

That was until he told me it costs a fee per month, immediately my heart sank and I thought wow my mum will never let me spend money on a game I've already bought every month. I was right, she didn't. Though one day in PC world, walking down an aisle I saw it.

There it was in a big blue box with a masked man and some other heroes looking as though they where bursting out of the box. I had to get it! I managed to persuade my mum to buy it for me without telling her about the recurring cost. As soon as the guy on the till handed me the bag I held it close to my chest so no one could steal it :P As I got in the car I immediately unwrapped the box and began reading the manual/user guide and the comic strips that came with it. I saw that "City of Villains" was coming soon! I learnt all about archetypes, a hero's origin and much more. I still have the original box and comic strip that came with it to this day thought a little bruised from when I first purchased it .

I installed the game on my computer knowing that I couldn't even play it but the fact I had it for when I could was good enough for me. Eventually I got my own bank card and had a little but of money in there from my birthday. I had some initial problems with the plaync website (as it was known back then) which caused me having to setup two accounts. But looking at my account page this account was:

    Created On: 14 May 2006

Wow! 6 years ago, feels like only yesterday! I remember logging in for the first time and hearing the music, it made me so excited you wouldn't even imagine.

I wasn't paying much attention and picked a server without really knowing what a server was. I got in to the character creation and I then sat down for a few hours playing with all sorts of costumes and ideas that came up in my head. Eventually I made a tanker who had super strength and invulnerability, his costume was dire, though at the time I thought it looked awesome and I was really happy with it and that's all that mattered.

So anyway I begin playing and I'm having the time of my life beating up bad guys around the street (at this point in time I had never played an MMO like this) I'm left handed myself and I was used to games were I had to use the arrow keys to move. So naturally I began to use the arrow keys... with my left hand... and then used my right hand to press space bar :P Which meant my arms were constantly crossed until I shifted my right hand back to my mouse to target something (those were the days!!)

I was approached by a man in the game, he was wearing a brown suit, brown trousers, a brown jacket and a brown fedora. He asked me whether I would like to team and I said yes without hesitation. So I went on my first mission with another player, it was so exciting! He had earth powers, when he clapped his hands everyone around him would be trapped in place. Obviously this was so freakin' awesome I later logged out and made myself an earth guy. (Embarrassingly I made it look just like the other guy in a brown suit because I just thought he was so cool! haha)

After a few hours of playing and not really paying attention to the chat bar I suddenly realised no one was talking English apart from my other team mate.

I suddenly thought "oh no I've bought the german version of the game, what a disaster! I panicked but luckily someone who spoke english explained to me about servers and that I should pick an english one. I felt so stupid but happy at the same time that I wasn't going to have to go out and buy the english version of the game.

Anyway time progressed, I was on an English server this time and that's where I made my martial arts/regen character Bold Eagle. Who would later become my first level 50 ever! (Took me over two years though what with alt-aholicsm) I remember going in to Bloody Bay to level as back then the missions there gave quite a lot of experience. I used to hate going through the hollows as well, I remember the enemies in the middle were deadly and If I fell in I was doomed! There was always a mission that had you run across the entire map as well.

My first choice of travel power was flight (who didn't take it their first time!?) Though I remember getting hover at level 6 and using it all the time, even hovering over the entirety of the hollows to avoid getting killed haha.

During my time in the City of Heroes I made a few friends but never got to know anyone properly, that was until I met Motty, Deadly Rose and Jay. Three awesome people who made my game time all the more fun. We would sit around Atlas Park and just talk with one another for ages, good times! Constantly taking the mick out of one another and joking about all sorts of rubbish. Quality banter at its best. The best part Is I'm still in contact with 2 of these people today (jay add me on steam if you ever read this!).

So time further progressed, 2006 soon became 2012 and here we are today. Looking back at all the good times as they are what matter the most. I love this game, the people in it and the people who are responsible for making it all happen.

And despite the route the game is going, I'm glad I was a part of it. So I raise my glass of milk (yeah I love milk :P) in honour of everyone who has made my memories so precious.

    Cheers!

    ~@Bold Eagle

  14. Thats what i thought, but do you think it will be nerfed any time soon? I mean.. its just so powerful
  15. Hi guys

Currently I'm stuck on deciding whether to invest my inf on my MA/REGEN scrapp or level up my SS/FIRE brute.

I have made a pretty awesome build for my scrapper but I'm not convinced it will be doing more dps than my brute.

Obviously the brute has nicer AoE with Footstomp Radius being double that of the dragons tail adding that with blazing aura, burn and fiery embrace makes short work of anyone.

Not only does this mean I can be of more use in groups but i can also farm too and improve my build more quickly.

The amount of time rage is up compared to focus chi also throws me off my decision.

Obviously my scrapper has a higher base damage but with rage, fury and fiery embrace up my sleeve it seems shadowed.

What would you choose to roll?
  16. Good to see some support, I didn't conduct a search last night as I wrote that nearly half asleep... but still the more people who request it, the more a chance of it being implemented.

It would just speed up the process of swapping colours realistically speaking.

How many of you are guilty in regards to putting your finger on the screen so you don't lose the colour you had when you swap to the secondary/primary colour :P?
  17. Hey just a small suggestion before i go to sleep!

You know how when you make a character costume you often play around with colour schemes... well!

I was thinking it would be nice to have a click-able 'reverse colours' option above the primary and secondary colour icons.

Think about all the times you have had to swap the two colours of a costume piece around to get it to fit in with the rest of your costume, and how much easier it would be instead of having to keep an eye on which shade of green you used and then having to find it again once you swapped colour priority.

It can even be tied in with the 'whole costume' marker so you can quickly reverse the entire colour scheme or individual pieces.

Mainly just a convenience/ease of use tool to help the costume creator along

    Thanks and good night!
  18. You should send it to @Bold Eagle :3
  19. Hi guys

I have been farming for years now and have a few farm toons.. first was the Fire/Kin troller, second the Spines/Dark scrapper and thirdly the Elec/SD scrapper.

They have been fun and efficient to play (apart from Spines/Dark who has end issues but cba to invest inf into). But now its time for a brute farmer!

So obviously there is the SS.Fire brute which mostly everyone plays and for obvious reasons and i have no issues being the cliché.

But i was also thinking about fire.fire and how it would compare to rage what with the fiery embrace.

Im not a fan of SS due to the rage crash.. but i hear most people get ticket capped before the crash kicks in so that's not a problem i suppose.

Now fire.fire has more single target damage compared to SS and a higher base damage AoE with fire sword circle and fire also has breath of fire.

Does rage really put SS far ahead of Fire? Or does the bonus damage from having a fire primary with the effects of fiery embrace level it out?
  20. I don't think i understand what you mean shadow. What do you mean by worried?
  21. Hi guys

Myself and a few friends of mine were talking about the darkness set as a whole the other day.

Although we like the powers in the power pool itself, we agreed the only thing stopping us rolling anything dark were the animations.

I know some of you must like it, and i don't want to change it if the majority of players do like it the way it is.

But i can't get to grips with the fuzzy, static feeling the powers tend to give. It just doesn't do the power set any justice in my opinion.

I thought it would be cool to implement the animations and graphics of the soul mastery set. They are more fun to look at and i think the colour adjuster would work well with it.

For example the soul tentacles would replace the normal tentacles, and the black hole power? Why not make it a larger version of the warshade teleport?

If you agree feel free to /sign below or comment on my thoughts and opinions.

    Thanks for reading!
  22. Thanks for the reply mate,

Regarding the alpha slot, i have noticed that stone melee is pretty end heavy and my biggest worry is running out of end and losing granite form in a hard situation, the accuracy radial boost looks good too for providing a 20% bonus to defence.

With the damage reduction granite brings the damage alpha could be nice but then again, am i expected to do much damage being a punchbag?

Should i aim for a perma, earth's embrace?

Also thanks for the build, i had guessed as much about capping defence, i will tweak it around a bit and see what numbers i can produce, if it is anything decent i will repost the build to share for others.
  23. Hi guys

Recently i have regained interest in my stone.stone tanker. I have never slotted a tank and am unsure what exactly i should be aiming for.

What set bonuses do i benefit from most? What alpha slot should i get?

    P.S. i am a granite tank.
  24. Hrm thanks for your support guys, i think i am going to roll both an ill/rad controller and try out an earth/ta which seems really fun!
