Paragon Studios @ PAX, what to expect?
Dual Pistol/Armor Praetorian Epic AT?
New buff/debuff powerset for Corrs and Defenders that emulates Armor class well enough to give people what they've been wanting?
Okay...those may just be me.
My guess...more power customizations, and they'll be in the game BEFORE i19!

questions about a massive overhaul of an integral part of an MMO(which is what pvp needs, not just bug fixes) that affect probably about an equivalent size community as the RP and hardcore badger community (as well as affecting those who badge/rp in pvp zones). it'd be nice to get some acknowledgement, literally *anything*, before they talk about more costumes/useless rp stuff/animated tails 2.0

And then, of course, I DO have issue with your size of the PvP community. I've seen far greater numbers participating in the VirtueVerse wiki than I have in totalling all the PvP participants I've ever met... Badgers? The hardest core badgers have two websites that track their stats and a great deal of participants. Heck, a single unannounced costume contest gets a better turnout than most PvP events.
I LIKE PvP, don't get me wrong, but I LIKE a lot in this game, and altering (again) a rulesset that will forever be out-of-balance and prone to complaints is going to be a far more labor intensive process than MANY OTHER additions to the game that will affect MANY MORE people.

Positron's i13 letter: We are trying to make PvP more accessible to new players, while giving experienced PvP'ers the advantage that comes with formulating tactics around the new systems we're putting in place. PvP from now on will be on our priority list. If something isn't working out, we'll be in there tweaking it and making it work, for the entire future of the product, not just Issue 13.
Well, I know there'll be at least one announcement that will please folks.
That is, if what I think is being announced is still being announced and has not been replaced by an announcement of an announcement to be announced at a later date. |
And was it the fitness pool becoming inherit?
I see that Castle is psyched about FireFall as well.....good to know
you do realize that while a large majority of the pvp community is on freedom there are some spread out on other servers AND most of the hardcore people play on test(since everything can be reproduced.) so while i Don't have number to back it up, it is still true that the community is significantly larger than most people give it credit for. (this is also due to something like RPing/badging doesn't require the amount of prep time and is much easier to participate in than pvp)

Castle please say something about PVP.
It's probably really early in the process, so if it is, that's fine. Just wondering if anything's nailed down yet.

So here is what I think of their appearance at PAX. I think that NCSoft is planning on one of three things.
1. Sell or split off Paragon Studios and leave them on their lonesome along with the city of properties.
2. Fold the studio and the game.
3. Give up on the game as a money maker and just let it survive on it's own for as long as it can by trying to keep current subscribers on board and paying for expansions.
I'm pretty convinced that option 3 is what they are doing. When I heard that City of would have no presence at the NCSoft booth I figured that they wouldn't have it playing on any screens but they would at least have a representative there with some literature and game codes. But that would be zero, zilch, zip, nada. Other than the panel you wouldn't even know the game is still around. No advertisements, no buttons, and not even in game codes at the booths. They are acting as if the property doesn't even exist.
It's not like they didn't have the room either. In previous years they have had one spot with two or three games playing on the screens and a table with various trinkets and game literature. This year they had double the space. Two huge areas, one dedicated to Aion and the other to Guild Wars II. So the only players who could get the costume codes would be those who showed up at the panel or the meet and greet which wasn't actually an official PAX event. At least I'm making that assumption since I was only able to make it Sunday and the booths didn't know anything about CoH codes. So for any PAX goers who don't frequent these forums there would be absolultely zero evidence that City of even existed if they didn't check the convention schedule to see what panels there were. No posters, no banners, no buttons, not even the index cards that beginning game companies give out.
Honestly this year PAX has convinced me that NCSoft feels there is no more real incentive to keep the game going for anything other than the continuing income that the long time players provide. I've ignored the doomsayers precisely because we have had a steady player base who were willing to buy whatever expansion packs were put out but to me this honestly looks like the first step of City of Heroes going the way of the other properties that the studio didn't consider big money makers. Internally there may be huge plans for issue 20 and beyond but externally I don't even expect to see a lone leaflet drifting by in the wind.
On the bright side though this means they will be giving the loyal subscribers pretty much everything they ask for (inherent fitness pool for example) in an effort to keep them around as long as possible. So keep your eyes open for full power set respecs, Big Red Ball, a Catgirl Expansion and perhaps even work on pvp.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
Mandu, I think you're reading WAY too much into CoH not being part of the NCSoft booth. I think NCSoft might've been focusing on Guild Wars 2 for this convention or something.

This is my take on it but since we're sharing opinions and suppositions...

I could be reading too much into it. It's just that I have NEVER seen NCSoft ignore all it's other games like this before. Usually they even have the free to play stuff represented. And as I said they had twice the space as usual.
If it is due to the game switching to Paragon Studios then PS promotional department needs to get off their lazy behinds and make some sort of appearance. The areas dedicated to games tripled this year. Even little startup companies just trying to bring out a new card game were able to get a decent sized space. For a studio not to show off their product right after a significant expansion and graphics upgrade gives the impression of about as much confidence in their product as a movie studio that refuses to screen that movie for critics before release. And if you hope to build your subscriber base impression is everything.
